I recall partying at Grapes on Main with some Jets. Igor Ulonov just arrived from Russia and the boys took him to Value Village shopping for a suit, he was so proud of it. Even though it was early 90's, his suit was early 70's. F'ing hilarious!!!

They used to come in a lot. I spoke with Teemu many times there. He was a great guy. Most of the Flames came in after a game one night. Same with Canucks. And then we'd just have to keep the drunken idiots away from them.

My crew and I used to frequent that place, probably some of the drunken idiots you refer to!:D

Agreed. I took the family to the Exchange after a WSO concert on a Sunday afternoon in the fall and I was surprised to see how little was actually open.

I can't fathom why anyone would want to live in such a dead neighbourhood.

That got me thinking, which is the best place to live for walkability, shops, eats etc. I think the Riverview/Lord Roberts area is the winner in that regard.

That's my area... I agree, it's great. It's varied but definitely not gentrified to the point where the Osborne strip is only lined with fancy gift shops and hair salons or whatever.

For what it's worth I'd say the Corydon area is also pretty good, and of course there are many other areas that fit the bill too (Old St. B., West Broadway/Wolseley, etc.).

But I will say, I don't see the north Exchange/Chinatown area as being dead at all... I mean, it's quiet on Sunday when places of business are closed, but frankly how many places in town are really bustling on Sunday? We don't really have many neighbourhoods that people gravitate to on Sunday the way you might see in other cities.

^ I work on James Ave behind the concert hall. It is amazing how much more "alive" this street feels now, compared to when we moved in a few years back (pre Sky phase 2, pre district condos.)

Once they figure out what to do across the street with the Pump house and parkade - it will be a nice little street.

The Pint Public House @ 274 Garry opened today. They had people in the skywalk handing out cards to announce the opening.

It was open since last Friday. My wife tried it last week and said all the food options she tried were very good. The manager was very attentive and wanted customer feedback. It's a sports bar, but second level apparently turns into a club-type atmosphere later in the evening. There was a DJ there on Friday. It's apparently a huge space.

^ Sounds like the Tavern United model, but with (apparently) better food.

Riverman Jan 5, 2015 8:24 PM

The concept of Tavern United is great, the execution not so much.
