I'm happy to report that one of the houses of Berkeley Square that has been heretofore photographically obscure is no longer a mystery. Number 10, home of at least four prominent Los Angeles families—the Taylors, the Reilleys, the Sterns, and the Allens—lasted from 1911 to 1962, when the Santa Monica Freeway plowed through the south side of the subdivision and condemnations for the Los Angeles School District took most of the balance. A recently unearthed newspaper photograph from 1925 serves as the basis for the illustration above. The full story of 10 Berkeley Square is here: http://www.berkeleysquarelosangeles....ern-house.html For an introduction to Berkeley Square: http://www.berkeleysquarelosangeles.com/ |

http://i809.photobucket.com/albums/z...1.jpg~original USC Digital Library A close-up shows that the name "Newmark" still appears on the sign. http://i809.photobucket.com/albums/z...rownstein2.jpg Detail of picture above. The 1909 CD shows the company as Brownstein, Newmark & Louis, but by 1911 it has become Brownstein-Louis Company, this time at 236-240 S. Los Angeles (I guess they expanded, hence the need to move). The 1915 CD shows them at their new address. http://i809.photobucket.com/albums/z...wnsteinCD1.jpg rescarta.lapl.org I found a site with an even earlier picture of Brownstein, Newmark & Louis, back when they were in the Baker and Arcadia Blocks (the lower right picture shows the building at the 236-240 S. Los Angeles address). The site is in Japanese, but Google Translate does enough to tell me that the pictures say it all! http://i809.photobucket.com/albums/z...rownstein3.jpg www.e-workers.net In 1898, their address was given as 344-346 N. Main. http://i809.photobucket.com/albums/z...wnsteinCD2.jpg rescarta.lapl.org The e-workers article also has this picture of the completed store/factory at 716-722 S. What is the hotel on the northwest corner of Francisco and 7th Street? You can see the sign, it says _____-ington Hotel. My first thought was Washington Hotel, but it was located at 307 S. Figueroa. http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/640...0/196/zebj.jpg lapl I thought I had my answer when I located this postcard...but I can't make out the damn sign. :( http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/xq90/691/cdxo.jpgebay We've probably discussed it before, but my memory...well...you know. __ |

Thanks HossC. I was stumped. I was kind of embarrassed to ask for help...I mean, how many hotels end with -ington.

Musso's on 6300 Wilshire. Joe Musso (The Musso of Musso and Franks) left his interest in that restaurant and opened up his own place on wilshire. It opened in the mid 1920's and remained until his death in 1946. Joe was married to my grandma, Emma Rovere, the sister of, yes you know.....BERT ROVERE! |

Unfortunately, Musso's is no more and sadness is in it's place. |
I work for another city's public works department. That's a temporary water meter and hook-up. Given the proximity to the demolition site, I'd guess its there to connect to provide wash-down water. Legal then, not so much now....
