If they ever move that substation, I think what goes there will be a very tall tower. It'll need to be to justify the cost of moving the substation.

This should be another new tallest. It's being called "308 Guadalupe".

Digging the height, but hope it's a placeholder.

As excited as I am to hear and see more details about a potential new tallest, I feel the same. The massing of the building is boring and uninspiring for such a tall and prominent tower. Maybe a color rendering will change my impression, but this needs a better design.

ILUVSAT Jun 17, 2017 9:00 PM

Looks good. Could be better as it may be the city's tallest. Looks to easily clear 700'. Maybe pushing 725'.

Isn't the W 478' tall? And this tower would be one block to the northwest of the W (catty-corner to the northwest to be exact).

A rendering for Block 185 has surfaced. This is the last project to start in the huge Greenwater/Seaholm development area. It looks to be about 67-stories.

Sorry, to be honest that new tallest has a pretty shit boring design. The Austonian is incredible, that one, not so much and it looks fat.

Really? At least is has more than just boring blue glass (even if it is mostly blue). I think it looks rather sleek.

The ATX Jun 24, 2017 11:58 PM

Based on the rendering and the fact that it looks to be an office project, it appears to be around 900'. I'll take it.

drummer Jun 25, 2017 12:59 AM

Not to mention, we're only getting one angle (Cesar Chavez side). I'd be interested to see it from the East and West. In either case, I hope this happens. Not everything needs to be loud and flashy. This seems pretty sleek and classy to me.

Edit: By the way, that rust/reddish accent color seems to be on the East side, at least, but I'm assuming both sides for symmetry. It does seem to travel beyond the podium, so I wonder if it would go all the way to the top.... that'd change the color scheme of downtown a bit, which would be nice.

Please add just ~7-stories or a little spire Trammell-Crow, and we'll have the first Texas supertall in a long time.

While I like the overall height, the design is just... blah. Austin needs more curvature appeal.

You guys know how much I usually hate on blue skyscrapers because I rant on it every chance I can get but this one is nice. New tallest for Austin? Check.

I approve!

MichaelB Jun 25, 2017 5:25 PM

Getting all technical here in reference to "BLUE" buildings.
(just info... no arguing or judgment.)
The "blue" is the sky reflected in silver. We don't really have any blue glass buildings. Silver being just reflective gray. Gray being either warm or cool. If there is a high value (lite) cool gray reflective surface..... it reflects the sky ( just like a mirror).... which is....well, blue! It's what the same building at night seems dark because it reflects the night sky.... or has a warmer feeling if you are seeing other light reflected in it.

Block 185 would be monumental to Austin, just don't be surprise if it is an older design. I love that the designer is Gensler. I also would love to have that in St. Louis.

The design is from 2015 when this project was expected to have a 2017 groundbreaking. So yeah, it could have changed.

Design of the tower is ok, the height I am digging though. But I'm hoping this tower will leave a great impression on the Austin skyline and not wind up like The Fairmont.

The blue glass box trend needs to end. This building also needs ground level retail for me to like it. I love the height though.

Syndic Jul 6, 2017 2:45 AM

The Aloft building at 7th & Congress is practically finished and I'm a big fan of how it interacts with the street. It's a big success to get a tall, skinny building that has great street interaction.

County prepares to strike lucrative deal for failed courthouse site

Tuesday, July 11, 2017 by Caleb Pritchard

Instead of a new civil courthouse, how about a massive, privately financed mixed-use development that will pour millions of dollars into public coffers?

The Travis County Commissioners Court will vote today to approve a deal with two firms – Lincoln Property Company and Phoenix Property Company – that will give them a 99-year ground lease on the land.

The Lincoln-Phoenix proposal envisions a titanic mix of office, residential, retail and parking. Per the county’s stipulations, the developer must adhere to stringent construction worker protections that align with the city of Austin’s Better Builder Program, a set of conditions endorsed by the Workers Defense Project. The firms will also ensure that 10 percent of all housing on the site is reserved for “low-to-moderate-income residents, based on the city’s Density Bonus Program,” according to a county press release. Furthermore, Lincoln-Phoenix will make a “major donation” to the Austin Parks Foundation to support the restoration of Republic Square Park just to the property’s north. The amount of that donation has not yet been revealed.

Travis County strikes deal with developers over failed courthouse site

Taylor Goldenstein
5:00 p.m Tuesday, July 11, 2017

Travis County officials announced a deal Tuesday with a pair of developers who will build on the vacant county-owned block at 308 Guadalupe Street where officials originally hoped to build a new civil courthouse.

The lease with Lincoln Property Company and Phoenix Property Company, which plan to build a mixed-use project on the site, will bring Travis County nearly $430 million in lease payments over the next 99 years. Officials started looking for developers to buy or lease the site last year, after voters in 2015 rejected a bond proposition to build a courthouse on that site.

Travis County will receive an initial $13.4 million payment at closing on Wednesday. That money and the future revenue from the site will help officials pay for a new civil courthouse elsewhere, officials said.

These are the only renderings we've seen so far, but it's believed this isn't the current plan since the county only just now selected a developer.

40-story apartment tower set for downtown Austin’s eastern edge

Shonda Novak American-Statesman Staff
5:30 p.m Tuesday, July 11, 2017

The sale of a 58-unit condo project overlooking Lady Bird Lake is now final, paving the way for more high-rise residential development in the Rainey Street area on downtown Austin’s eastern edge.

More than 80 percent of the owners of the decades-old Villas on Town Lake condominiums — the statutory requirement for a sale to occur — agreed to sell their units at the 2.3-acre waterfront property, which is tucked at the foot of Red River Street adjacent to the hike-and-bike trail.

Preliminary plans for the first phase call for a tower of about 40 stories with approximately 400 apartments, Ip said. A second tower would be timed to market demand, Ip said.

Genesis will be required to get a site plan approved by the city of Austin before starting construction. Ip estimated it could be sometime next year before the project breaks ground. The cost of the project has not been determined, and Genesis will have to obtain construction financing.

Can any of you put all skyscrapers together to 3D images for us to see the future Austin skyline?

KevinFromTexas Aug 3, 2017 12:17 AM

This says it would be the 4th tallest, but it's actually the 5th tallest. The Independent, The Austonian, Fairmont Hotel and 360 Condos would each be taller. Although, it will have the 3rd highest roof in the city. The Fairmont and 360 Condos both have spires.

315-unit luxury apartment skyscraper proposed for downtown Austin moves closer to approval

If approved, the building at 300 Colorado St. would be the fourth-tallest building in the city's skyline

A 44-story, 315-unit luxury apartment skyscraper moved one step closer to taking the place of the one-story Sullivan’s Steakhouse at 300 Colorado St., Austin, after the city’s Design Commission approved the plans on Monday night.

The proposal now heads to the Historic Landmark Commission as the developer, Austin 3C Venture LP, has requested a demolition permit for the more-than-80-year-old, one-story, brick facade building that sits on the southern end of downtown’s Warehouse District.

Although the plans passed 8-1, commissioners voiced concern over the historic significance of the site. Though they said the Warehouse District is not an official historic district, commissioners said it is one recognized by longtime residents. Rather than demolish the structure—out of which Sullivan’s Steakhouse still operates—commissioners expressed a desire to maintain its character on at least the ground floor, which is planned to operate as a commercial space.
