Interesting. I really like what Loyola is doing to spruce up the area around the L stop. Too bad they couldn't get a hold of the corner where that ugly drive thru Starbucks is being built

There needs to be more development around the arena. Figured thered be some by now.

We're not playing SimCity. Development requires demand.

Does anyone know who I could talk to about this section of the forum? Who's in control of organizing it? I think it would be nice if NYC had its own "NEW YORK CITY | General Developments" thread rather than making a new thread for every project and proposal...

It appears that the 5 story apt building planned for the SW corner of Wells and Scott St in Old Town is supposed to start in March

I wonder if they'll finish 1225 wells before starting that one..

1225 is complete and nearly leased.

^^ I should have been more specific; the old building facade that still is torn off and the first floor of the new Plum Market which hasn't had concrete poured yet.

wierdaaron Feb 6, 2013 5:27 PM

For some useless information, Plum Market originated in southeast Michigan where I'm from -- I'm a big fan of them. I was surprised when I heard they were coming to Chicago, though, since they're very similar to Mariano's in both form and function.

Either way, I love grocery stores coming to town. I think the heart of the loop is underserved in that regard. I got excited when I saw a vacant retail space at Michigan and Monroe-ish wrapped with Jewel Osco branding, thinking it was going to become one, but that turned out to just be advertising. I thought it was a brilliant spot for a mid-sized upscale grocer.

It's just from the angle of this photo. I work 3 blocks away and from my angle it has a lot of company.

Skyguy_7 Feb 7, 2013 1:30 PM

^ Yep. This was taken looking NE from the stop sign at Kinzie and Canal. I was surprised by the view from this angle as well. It reminds me of a few new towers randomly popping up in China

I know this is a little off topic, but after attending the Riverwalk presentation yesterday and hearing about the lights that used to adorn the bridges I began a youtube search and came across this amazing video. I cannot believe it only has 65 views. It is a little dated, but what a great use for that space south of Roosevelt. The poster of the video is MasterSchroen and the link is below.

The idea in that video is good, but it's not presented very well in the video. I'd be happy to have anything happen with that area.

I want to buy it and grow corn.

wierdaaron Feb 8, 2013 4:44 AM

Another way to get more federal funds, classify Chicago as a corn farm. Goodbye, deficits.

ardecila Feb 8, 2013 6:58 AM

Hmm. I had the same idea a few years back; the city could reuse the obsolete bridges that are getting replaced on the North Branch (North, Halsted, Division 2x, Chicago). Barge transportation allows the bridges to be moved intact.

That video needs the first 2 minutes cut out. The designer's job is to convince me visually that bridges are meaningful and exciting places that can activate marginal sites, not to flash text at me. I have millions of choices on YouTube; why would I sit through several minutes of useless quotes and some unlicensed Edward Sharpe?

The dance party was pretty awesome, though.
