Geez you can rent a view like this? I always imagined spring had a decent view to both the East and West. But 360 and Monarch blocks a good portion to the East! This is the best DT view any building has.

Demolition begins downtown to make way for glitzy condo tower

Austin Business Journal

The wrecking crews descended this week on the former headquarters of the Texas Press Association at 718 W. Fifth St.

Austin-based Riverside Resources purchased the site and is building Fifth & West, a 39-story condo tower that will be one of the tallest buildings in the city when it's finished in fall 2017. Click on the photo to see a slideshow of the site and renderings of the new tower.

Demolition is expected to take 15 working days, according to project spokesman Scott Dunaway.

By my count there are over 5,000 hotel rooms in various stages of development in Downtown Austin. This list only includes what most people consider to be "Downtown proper". There are more boutique hotels in development adjacent to Downtown, in the SoCo area and east of I-35 for example. There are also hundreds, if not thousands, in development all around Austin and the suburbs. Three of the projects don't have publicly announced room counts, so I conservatively estimated them at 300 each based on similar projects.

Edit: Nvm. I see where you posted about it in October and I asked about it then. haha

Speaking of hotels, this was recently tweeted by Dan Keshet on Twitter: "So far, JW Marriott not slowing SXSW hotel market. During SXSW music, JW going for $899/night; Courtyard Marriott $799."

Goodness gracious, that's a boatload of money. It's almost a million dollars a day.

Add that to the 4,990 existing rooms Downtown and that's 10,063 total rooms. And if you include the Hyatt Regency (448 rooms) and Embassy Suites (262 rooms) - which are just across the lake from Downtown - it would be 10,773 rooms if everything gets built.

Syndic Dec 10, 2014 3:16 AM

Add that to the amount of residences already built/being built and the amount of offices already built/being built downtown and you have some pretty intense density/foot traffic. Gotta give kudos to the city council for being forward-thinking and implementing the Great Streets program when they did. As inconvenient as it can be, it's only a little bit at a time and it will pay off in the long run.

Here's an article talking about it all the way back in 2002: http://www.austinchronicle.com/news/2002-10-04/104053/

I'll be honest, I barely keep track or check this Austin compilation due to my focus on East Coast cities. After I watched a video that Kevin posted in the aerial thread relating to Austin, I quickly realized my mistake. This city is looking amazing. I am really surprised on the amount of construction that is going on. All of which is up to a standard of excellence. :worship:

I really like the Green Water office tower. How tall is that one going to be?

KevinFromTexas Dec 11, 2014 3:50 PM

400 feet with 28 floors. The building on the right in the rendering is under construction now, and it's going to be 424 feet with 38 floors.

Texas is growing — more business, more people, more opportunity — and that means a lot more construction.

There's so much commercial construction, in fact, it's hard to keep track of, which is why the Texas Business Journals came together to create this inaugural edition of Super Structures. Profiled in this special subscriber content publication are the biggest or most significant construction projects underway in each of Texas' largest cities.

We included everything from office towers rising in our downtowns to master-planned communities pushing the borders of our regions.

Subforums with dedicated building threads are highly logical when you live in a place like Austin that is so busy that it's making the nimbys cry at night, even if this mysterious place called "Manila" one ups us every once in a while.

Here's my latest list of Austin's tallest active projects. As in my previous lists the highlighted projects are either U/C or have had their official ground breaking with financing in place.

Number three on the list will be a new tallest at ~750', but I don't have a documented height or floor count even though it appears to be 61-stories. So I left it as number three.

The ~35-40-story I-35 & 12th St. residential tower doesn't have a documented floor count or height available. So I left that one off the list for now.

There are several more buildings in the works that are at least 100', but I left those off the list as well because I don't have any document heights for them.

Great listing, HC!

Is 70 Rainey now being pegged at ~35 stories? I have documentation outlining a 31-story, 380' tower.

Didn't the original developer (Riverside Resources) sell this property to another group recently? I think I heard/read that somewhere. I also think the new group may be interested in, looking into the possibility of, increasing the number of levels as well?!?

A New York group (Fremont) bought it and are trying to increase the height to 35-stories.

I don't worry about or get into personal competitions with other city's skylines becasue every city developes differently. But if all of the U/C and proposed projects get built the skyline will literally more than double in size in five years. That's is really hard to grasp considering it has already done that since the early 2000s.

It'll be awhile before we surpass Charlotte. Charlotte has a lot of construction activity as well, and they have a huge head start against us as seen below.

Height Range - Charlotte # - Austin #

Completed (inc. JW, Colorado Tower, & Bowie):

800-900 - 1 - 0
700-800 - 1 - 0
600-700 - 2 - 1
500-600 - 2 - 2
400-500 - 7 - 5
300-400 - 10 - 16

Austin has a bunch of 400 foot roof buildings (I include Fairmont here despite the "spire") in the works and under construction, as well as a perhaps 700+ building and an unknown height building that'll be substantial. Charlotte, however, also has a good number of tall buildings in the works. 201 Trade, for instance, is 601'. Other 300'+ projects include the Bearden, Skyhouse #2, 300 South Tryon, Tryon Place, etc. They don't have as many projects certainly, but because they're starting from such a higher baseline with their current tall builds and because their skyline is more clustered and tight knit, it's visually more striking. Austin has a lot of empty spots to fill and needs substantially more height (I.E. we need a tower in the 700-800 foot range (fingers crossed with the Independent) and the 800-900 foot range (I'd love for the development just south of the Fairmont to be consolidated into a single building for height, but that's obviously not going to happen) before it catches Charlotte.

Happy birthday Austin!!!! On Dec, 27th The city of Austin was founded 175 years ago.

lzppjb Dec 29, 2014 2:42 AM

My family helped set the scene for the founding of Waterloo in 1837. Happy belated birthday, Austin!

Quote:

Mr. Galbreath was bom in Macon County, North Carolina, on the 22d day of March, 1823, and came to Texas in March, 1837. In the fall of the same year the Galbreath family settled at Bastrop, on the Colorado River, which was then the outside settlement. The Indians were so hostile and made such frequent raids that these isolated settlers at times almost despaired of sustaining themselves. Gen. Edward Burleson, who had already distinguished himself in the Texas revolution, lived seven miles below Bastrop, and to him the people looked for protection and advice in these perilous times. Burleson said, "We must defeat the Indians in a general engagement, or else leave the country." It was decided by the settlers to endeavor to give the Indians a battle, and to do this they must invade their stronghold, which was in the mountains far up the Colorado. General Burleson was asked to lead the force, which was soon raised, of men and boys who could load and shoot a gun and had a horse.

About one hundred settlers assembled at Bastrop for the expedition. Among this number was Thomas Galbreath, then a boy of 15 years of age, and carrying his father's old flintlock rifle.
He had only that year come to Texas, and had never seen a wild Indian.

General Burleson led his men up the Colorado to the mouth of the Llano, and there came upon the Indians in their village in large force. Besides the warriors there were many squaws and
children. The Comanches were aware of the approach of the white men, and met them half a mile from their village to give them battle. Burleson formed his men in one line, and the Indians came at a full running charge and yelling loudly. They presented a formidable appearance, riding good horses, their shields on their left arms, and a quiver full of arrows protruding above the left shoulder. All had on the fierce-looking war paint, and many of them had buffalo horns on their head. Their long black hair waved in the breeze like streamers behind them. Their looks, loud yells, and impetuous charge was enough to strike terror, to the hearts of men who had never met them before.

Young Galbreath felt uneasy, and said if he had seen anyone else run he would have followed suit. He looked at the men around him. Some had fought Indians before, and seemed in nowise put out by this demonstration on the part of the Comanches. General Burleson passed close to Galbreath with fire in his eye and giving his commands short and quick, in about these words : "Dismount now, men, and stand to them. They are not going to run over us. Hold your rifles ready and don't shoot too quick. Take good aim. We will scatter them the first fire.''

Many of the Indians were nearly naked. They came as if they were going to run over the settlers without making any halt. The loud, clear voice of Burleson was heard, "Fire, boys, fire !'' There was a rattling, cracking volley all along the line, and the Indians divided, circling right and left all around the white men. They lay low on the opposite side of their horses and shot arrows as they went. The effect of the fire from Burleson's men could be seen in front. Horses were down and struggling amidst dead and crippled Indians, while others were running riderless with the charge. Others turned back, bullet stricken, and galloped in terror from the field. Some of the Indians who had been fatally hit were falling from their horses as they passed around the settlers. "Load quick, men ; they will come again," said the commander.

The fight lasted some time, the Comanches making four charges in all. When the quick eye of Burleson perceived that they had begun to weaken, he ordered his men to mount with loaded guns and charge them. The Indians gave way and began their retreat across the open prairie towards the mountains, not even stopping at their village. The running fight lasted two miles, and then the pursuit was called off. The settlers came back by way of the village and took possession of a number of horses, eighty head in all. The squaws looked sullen and would not talk. They were mad because the warriors had been whipped and had run away.

The horses which were taken belonged to the settlers around Bastrop. None of Burleson's men were killed on the ground, but many were hit with arrows and some died afterwards. The Indians had no firearms. Many of the settlers' horses were wounded.

Mr. Galbreath says this battle caused the settlement to start where Austin is now, but it was then called Waterloo. During the fight he fired his rifle four times. The Indians moved further west.

Incredible! Thank you so much for these. :)

One thing that really stands out to me is the lack of parking lots downtown now. Other than the one on 7th that will be there forever. :D Just a few years ago it would have been easy to see a number of parking lots downtown, but now only the 7th street one is really visible. Infact from Dean Keeton/UT to Town Lake only the 7th Street and a couple on State land pop out (along Congress).

Those images really show how much the new UT Medical School will begin to tie things together.
