Pingyao you can't just go taking pics of real life streetscapes and pass them off as modeled work ok. just stop it :P Lovin the piss takes on the ads too! how much time do you need to put into this work ?

Outstanding work! I love the grittiness of it!!

I just noticed something -- I just watched the movie "Seven" with Brad Pitt and Morgan Freeman the other day, and the urban setting of that movie looks a lot like the city you're constructing... and Morgan Freeman's character is named "Somerset." Haha, was that why you named the street Somerset?

Thanks guys, haha no I didn't use Se7en as inspiration, but it is very much in that grittiness vein. The avenue names are after English counties.

More renders.

Love it!

Overview of how much is complete and when you look at it above, there's not actually much done! I'm now starting of Block 4, which will be mainly made of of early 20th century buildings.

It's fascinating to see how amazing renders you're able to do even though you don't have that much ground covered yet.

The 74 Somerset looks fantastic! Great thing you also modeled the load bearing structure inside the curtain wall. It really adds a lot of realism in this kind of building.

Yes the renders are generally positioned to avoid showing the vast gaps in the model. 74 Somerset was a test, I may do more of this approach for the modern stuff, although I'm currently obsessed with older architecture.

I have completed the Wiltshire Building a 1930's art deco beauty on the corner of Wiltshire and 5th.

Freakin' sweet!!

Sneak construction peak of an older style building on the corner of Wiltshire and 6th. This will contain a branch of PingBank.

Everything is so believable it's unbelievable!

Pingyao May 24, 2012 1:03 PM

Not much done since last update. Little more work on the adjoining link building between PingBank and the Wiltshire Building.

I'm moving house (finally) next week so now packing. I'll probably be out of action for a few weeks before I can get PC set up as I need to get a home office done first so I can carry on earning a living. So last update for a while...

great job.. the wiltshire building is by far my favorite!

Vellu Jun 4, 2012 10:00 AM

The Wiltshire building is really beautiful! It's kind of a combination of New York's art deco towers (because of the shape) and Miami's art deco buildings (because of the colors) so it fits really well in this "New York with palm trees" theme.

Also great and realistic detail on the apartment building and PingBank Building!

I'm watching. Very closely.

Skydragon42 Oct 5, 2013 10:13 PM

Amazing detail! It would take me a month to make just one building like that!

Patrick Oct 6, 2013 1:00 AM

Absolute sex.

I have nowhere near the right amount of patience to produce such detailed buildings let alone an entire city!

Your work is inspiring keep it up!

Much thanks chaps, always appreciative of comments.

I have been very busy with work and family life, but now I work partly from home so I can when I'm free 'tinker' with Cinema 4D. I practically never opened it for nearly a year, but I'm sure some of you may be familiar with that withdrawl feeling where you get itchy feet and just have to go back to designing stuff in 3D. Anyway the 3D drug got the better of me and I have been playing about the last couple of weeks.

I started off thinking about how to generate a supersize city using basic blocks and buildings 'instanced' to the extreme. In effect making a huge 3D city backdrop to much more detailed construction modelling of skyscraper designs. The one think I kind want to achieve is actual construction stories of new designs which are currently on paper and inside my head. I don't want

just grey block backdrops, I want an actual living, breathing city. This thereby makes the under construction renders of the 'building' much more realistic.

This then made me think of the 'Detailed City Project'. The one issue I have with this is its taking so Frakking long to make. So If I complete just a few more local blocks and then merge my idea of a repeated block approach to the surrounding context I can then concentrate on actual under construction building designs within a realistic, actual large scale backdrop.

This is all still long term stuff and not going to happen overnight, but the first thing I need to do is finish the block I have already begun about 18 months ago. So a quick render of an apartment building which i have made just to get familiar again with modelling and rendering. Onwards and upwards....
