Right. And Greenblatt's first moved into that building in 1940 or '41. For the previous two years, Greenblatt's had been located one block east of it. F. Scott Fitzgerald's last "meal" --a chocolate bar-- allegedly came from Greenblatt's. |

i'm sorry but the post i put up is in response to something way too old,
(221 N Rampart Blvd), so I am attempting to delete it. The forum won't let me. My apologies. SR |
A couple years ago the Huntington accessioned a large collection of slides shot by a character named Palmer Conner; little is known about him save that he roamed postwar downtown and captured a whole lot of now-lost LA. They've begun scanning them and putting them online, as we found out recently. The Huntington uploaded twenty-nine and I've been checking regularly for the next grouping -- today they brought it up to fifty. Gems galore! Here are just a handful.
First off, here's something you don't see every day: the Martz Flats, in living color! http://farm4.staticflickr.com/3676/9...ed272697_o.gifhuntington More about Martz in this great post here. And another image, just because we can: http://farm6.staticflickr.com/5504/9...f636d4d3_o.gifhuntington |
Now you see it, now you don't...
April 20, 1957: http://farm3.staticflickr.com/2821/9...77f201c1_o.gifhunt That's the Richelieu sandwiched between the Melrose and 144. One month later, May 20, 1957: http://farm6.staticflickr.com/5488/9...20d4d5c0_o.gifhunt |
Just nothin' bad about
http://farm3.staticflickr.com/2819/9...7b8dd87b_o.gifhuntington ...nor the fact that these are scanned in high-res so one can explore every detail. Speaking of, anyone out there have a clearer image of one of these "Parking Prohibited" signs? http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7286/9...d9680bf8_o.gifhuntington To the far left is 259 Bunker Hill Ave, where serial killer Indus Arthur lives in "Angel's Flight." |
I should mention that the collection is not all downtown-centered. For example, Conner was interested enough in the demolition of the Getty "Sunset Boulevard" house at Wilshire & Irving to go out and photograph it in February 1957:

The best way to start a morning is to wake up and see posts like these. Thank you, compadre Beaudry, for Kodaking my world.

One detail that really caught my eye: the sign for "MACHIN Shirtmakers". From the early 1900s to the 1950s (when its cachet began to fade), "Machin" was the custom shirtmaker of choice for Los Angeles's elites: bankers, movie stars, oil men, etc. Its only real competitor was a shirtmaker named J.T. Beach, who was favored by Clark Gable.
Not a very nice location for such a business, eh? http://i1292.photobucket.com/albums/...ps3a58a35e.gif |
