The quality of this thread is starting to suck, (and I know that I just added nothing to help that.)

It seems like a bit of a lull, what happened to Zaza? I thought they were kind of doing site prep already. And the project on 8th street was supposed to start in June I thought.

Can't wait to click skyscraperpage.com in 5 days, only to see that Honolulu and Dayton, Ohio have more forum action than us... :-)
hahahaha personally, I blame La-Shonda Novak She was probably kidnapped by the same Houstonite that kidnapped Kevin in Texas |

Look at the Philadelphians, they're a proud bunch that have over 100 posts of nothing but their opinions (no updates) every single day. And when they do get updates, the thread gains 150 new posts a day. Austinites can take some pride notes from that. |

This thread should be the thread we use.... it's the one everyone clicks on when they go to skyscraperpage.com and there is an energy created when you see austin is always up at the top of that list... I can't wait to see what's posted next! then everyone goes all "hipster subforum's are cool" on my ass and now I have to find everyone's stuff? and where the hell is Kevin? I am seriously worried about him.... he's probably in that houstonite's basement ... poor guy |
I agree that we should post more in this thread as well. City Compilations is the first section the majority of people see. Not everyone goes into the sub forum so in order to keep a wider audience in the loop then its a good idea to add posts on this thread.
|
It's hard to balance. There were so many projects to track that a sub-forum became necessary. I do think it's a combination of some forum users, myself included, forgetting about this thread, and there not being a ton of new announcements right now. Lot of projects that we are either waiting to finish, or to go from proposal to reality. I don't think we will see many new proposals until financiers see how the market absorbs all this new construction. Maybe posting some picture updates in here on occasion in addition to new project announcements.
|
I prefer to be able to pick and choose which projects i want to monitor. Sub-forums are great for that.
I know if I really want to explore other cities to look for Sub-forums. I don't mind "workin' for it" a little. |

And I haven't gone anywhere. I have been downtown lately taking some photos. The sub-forums have been around for about 5 years I believe. Most of the minor updates - things like utility permits, crane permits, etc., get posted to each individual building thread, while the more major updates like building elevations with heights and renderings get posted in those threads, and here. It's just that we're in a lull right now. We've seen almost every rendering for every new project, and we have heights now for just about every new project. Now we're mostly just waiting to hear if they'll break ground. And waiting on those rumored projects that haven't announced yet. |

AHHHH that would be amazing. The RBJ Center site has to be one of the most underutilized pieces of lakefront land in the city. I look forward to what this team has in store :)

Took a long stroll around downtown this afternoon and snapped some photos on my iPhone, not the best quality but gives you an idea of all the construction going on right now in Austin!
I wish they'd add some tables w/ umbrellas in this plaza area of the courthouse to attract some downtown patrons for lunch and enliven it -- as it stands now the whole area is almost always empty every time i've gone past it, even during lunch hour. https://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/54...0/829/0ri0.jpg I like the colored seating & funky planters that Frank has, little things like this can do a lot to liven up the sidewalk and create a better pedestrian experience http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/102...0/829/q93u.jpg http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/102...0/853/lxwd.jpg Bowie & Seven making an impact on the Western Skyline http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/102...0/822/zjn1.jpg http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/102.../843/4ic0l.jpg Colorado Tower started to show form the lake http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/102...0/855/z1y8.jpg http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/102...0/849/92hh.jpg Crane city! http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/102...0/819/fsip.jpg Never noticed these before, anyone know what the story is behind them? http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/102...0/853/je96.jpg |
Those were for the old whole foods back when it was in the same building as Book People.

As for the pic of the Courthouse plaza. Not sure tables, etc will ever happen there. THat area is part of the barrier around the courthouse for safety ( Thank you OKC bomber) There is a barrier distance that is required all around the building. ( I think it's 50 feet, but I'm sure someone will know for sure) It's why the street was closed. They couldn't get enough distance on all sides and still make the building work. (Note how the actualy building is set back on all sides.) Which does mean they might have picked the wrong location. But that is another debate that happened years ago! LOL! The farmers market uses that area when the park is bad shape….. and folks sit there to eat…. but that's about it. |
So this is going on at the north end of Rainey street, what they tore down Lustre Pearl for, but I forget the name of the project.

Thanks for the update Priller, the project is called Millennium Rainey.

Yep. That's what it is. It's planned to be 504 feet tall with 47 floors. It would be our 4th tallest behind the Austonian, 360 Condos and the Frost Bank Tower.
|
|
That is the 416 Congress Hotel that was planned. it was supposed to be 336 feet with 26 floors. It's most likely dead. We haven't heard anything about it since April of 2012.
Here's the thread on it with more details/renderings. http://forum.skyscraperpage.com/showthread.php?t=181898 |
Renderings come out for the new 35 story apartment tower planned for Rainey Street later today in the Austin Biz Journal.

Same here Hill Country, as soon as I read down half way it got me real excited to see another high rise going in at Rainey St. In which Mayor Lee Leffingwell saved the best for last.
|
Yeah, I haven't seen any files on it on the city's website. 35 floors would almost certainly be another 400 footer.

Well there's no way that's 400 feet tall, and it's not even 35 floors. I count 28 floors.

San Antonio is on the verge of a very possible skyscraper boom. A couple of 600(2 Proposed) footers will really compliment S.A's thick infill. S.A.'s skyline needs some new skyscrapers but it has one of the better street levels of the sunbelt cities. :) |

Expensive by Texas standards but we really are still pretty cheap when compared to other cities especially on the east and west coasts.
Austin will be unique among the Texas cities with regards to density and ultimately height because we are growing in a different way now. We have to because we don't have multiple interstates and 2 or 3 loops encircling the city nor do we have the room to ever build anything like that. None of the other big 3 will end up being compact and dense the way Austin will eventually be because they are already spread out and they have highrise clusters outside of their DTs. As Austin continues build up the core over the next 20 years, there will be a huge difference in how Austin looks compared to the other cities. |
