I could definitely do without another Leslie.
As for the restaurant announced for Seaholm, it says it's going to be 4 stories (w/ a rooftop deck) and you can ascend stairs through the old boiler. Sounds like it'll be inside the actual power plant. Maybe it'll have some public access after all. |
Actually, they said all along that it would have public access. They even said, initially, that it would contain "some modest exhibits" (not an exact quote).
Also, I should note that Colorado Tower is now just visible from I-35 now. |

Oh, very cool. Thanks for pointing that out.
|
I'm just thinking how awesome the inside of seaholm would be for an action flick... kinda like a car chase barreling through the lobby, a la True Lies, when Schwarzenneger chases the dude in motorcycle with a horse. Then they finally meet to the roof top or the bad guy climbs one of those boilers and jumps off, but somehow escapes.

"We can never know about the days to come But we think about them anyway And I wonder if I'm really with you now Or just chasing after some finer day.... And stay right here, 'cause these are the good old days." I moved to So Cal for high school and went to college there and thought about those lyrics every time I traveled down a Los Angeles street and saw something familiar changed or gone. I moved to Austin in 1993 and said to myself "Take pictures of every corner and every place that is 'Old Austin' because it too will change. And How fast it is changing. I wish I had taken those photos. |
So the old drive-thru bank at 5th and San Jacinto is gone (quickly replace by surface parking) and now the parking garage at 5th and Brazos looks like it's being torn down.
|
I could see the developers having an agreement to tear down the drive thru bank to create temporary parking while the parking garage is torn down and rebuilt with ground floor retail. Once the new garage is completed then Magellan could start their 47 floor project.
|
Perhaps this is just all the Austin landowners very cleverly making the most use (read: money) out of their property. Their long-term intention is to develop in the white-hot market, but first, after waiting out the winter real estate doldrums, they tear down everything just in time to lease the lots to SXSW events (read: money), and then as soon as that wraps, they throw out plans and stick shovels in the ground right as the spring buying/selling season takes off.
It's so devious that it's brilliant. |

Some doubts about Manchester
|
I'm not real worried about the need for it. I heard from the project manager of the JW Marriott that that hotel has rooms booked through 2020...

Too bad. The Mayor of Austin told me about two-and-a-half years ago he doubted this project would come to fruition. |

The top of the Marriott is starting to look really spiff. Would be great if there were an observation deck up there.

From what I heard recently, there will be no public spaces up there. You're right, though, it would have been an amazing space to use for some kind of amenity. By the way, I also heard the cranes are 575 feet tall.

The Green hole is huge and deep now. They're really getting after it on that site. It's like the total opposite of the library site.

Here are some up close & personal shots I took of Seaholm on my ride today.
Boiler #9 + Grill is already kind of taking shape with the cut outs. I have a feeling it will be one of the best restaurants in Austin. http://i1342.photobucket.com/albums/...s16473033.jpeg http://i1342.photobucket.com/albums/...sb95a3472.jpeg http://i1342.photobucket.com/albums/...s9d1c418d.jpeg http://i1342.photobucket.com/albums/...sc88c17e8.jpeg Green site dig already getting quite deep! http://i1342.photobucket.com/albums/...s554a8ae1.jpeg http://i1342.photobucket.com/albums/...s286e2d69.jpeg The Catherine is getting quite tall as well http://i1342.photobucket.com/albums/...se038538f.jpeg |
Seaholm really REALLY should have been reserved as a transit center...e.g. Austin's 'Union Station'. The fact that a private company is going to use that awesomely historical and unique building is just absolutely recockulous. It really should have been for PUBLIC use. None of us will ever get to see the inside of Seaholm unless we get a job there?? What tha eff?!?! I guess money talks- BS walks.

That link says the site plan shows it exceeding 344 feet, but I doubt that's the case for a 20-story building, unless it has a spire. I'm betting it's 244 feet. Site plans sometimes start with 100 feet as their ground level elevation instead of 0.
|
344 did seem a bit much.

Fairmont Hotel Update
I think i saw the beginning of activity on the Fairmont site today, and initial work seems to have begun on the Dell Medical School, near little campus.

I am beginning to wonder if they're scaling it down. This thing is beginning to fall far behind.

Lady Bird Lake area among possible sites for Erwin Center replacement
Chad Swiatecki
Staff Writer- Austin Business Journal There appear to be four possible sites in the greater Austin area that could accommodate the replacement for the University of Texas’ Frank Erwin Center, with land currently occupied by the Austin American-Statesman on Congress Avenue appearing to be the most hospitable location. http://www.bizjournals.com/austin/bl...for-erwin.html Capacity of 25,000 and costing north of $200 million...... |
Great infill in ATX

New renderings of the Fairmont too. Will start soon. By Urbanizzer on HAIF.

I really like those new Waller Center renderings. They put it within its real surroundings, even going as far as including the parking lot next door and the construction barricade thingamajigs that are on the site. To me, this is a sign that they're serious about this project. The blue glass on the second rendering looks really cool and I like the way that the retail runs parallel down Cesar Chavez now.
Consider me much more encouraged by this project. Edit: I just realized that they're calling it Waller Park Place now. |

The Fairmont will have a heckuva impact driving northbound i35 as you bank that sharp turn before Riverside.
|
What a cluster of high density that area will be if all three get built....Trinity Place, The Fairmont and Waller Park Place.....Wow.

New 7th & Congress aka Aloft Austin Downtown. I'm x-posting from the Austin subforum because we need to post new renderings and announcements here since it's a more visible/high-traffic forum.
FWIW, I doubt they're worried about the market considering they're such a huge hotel chain. It's probably more about market participation and brand recognition for them than anything else. It helps to get hotels in popular vacation destinations. People who are familiar with your brand/name are more likely to stay at your hotel when they go on other vacations. http://i.imgur.com/QeLGOWj.png http://i.imgur.com/YsmN66u.png http://i.imgur.com/IcGtLlRh.jpg |
Loving Austin right now! That hotel is a gem! Share some hotels with Houston lol
|
That is just lovely. Does anyone think it will really be (looks like) 29 stories tall? Thanks for posting it here Syndic. The color and some of the architectural features make me think of the design for the new Westin on 5th.
