There was a ground breaking today at the Red Hill Busines Park.

Note: The new DHL facility at Hamilton Airport is only 200,000 sqft.

In tandem with UPS, an even larger warehouse is going up at 863 Nebo Road nearby.

It's a huge, huge building, about 600,000sf (compared to Amazon's 800,000sf).

A quick google seems to indicate that it will be occupied by Atlantic Packaging, a Toronto-based logistics company which currently does not have any operations on Hamilton.

Ikea to build distribution centre on Glover Road
The multinational company unveiled its plans for the Steeltown facility earlier this month

Ikea is coming to Hamilton — but don’t start the car just yet.

The multinational company’s Canada division recently announced its plans to build a customer distribution centre on Glover Road in Steeltown in 2025.

The facility will support the Swedish ready-to-assemble furniture company’s “expansion throughout southwestern Ontario,” according to a press release. No further details were provided about the distribution centre.

However, the new Ikea site is part of a plan that will see the company spend more than $400 million on projects aimed at expanding their fulfilment capabilities in the Greater Vancouver and Toronto areas, according to the press release.

Ikea Canada spokesperson Lisa Huie told The Spectator the new centre in Hamilton will “be key” in improving their customer fulfilment network in the Greater Toronto Area, ensuring products are available and delivery times are as short as possible.

Huie said the company is expecting the centre to open by the summer of 2025, with a goal of retaining and attracting workers to the facility, which will be built with their “climate-positive ambitions in mind.”

good to see it's official. I believe it was shared on these boards a year or so ago when they purchased the property, which is the area roughly bounded by Glover Rd, Twenty Rd, Dartnall Rd, and the hydro corridor.


They also have an active site plan application already:

Phase 1 will be 700,000sf, which is a bit smaller than Amazon's building (800,000sf). With phase 2, it would be 865,000sf, which I believe is slightly larger than Amazon is.

I wonder if phase 2 includes IKEA's HQ move from Burlington to Hamilton?

That might give them some of the additional retail space that I believe was part of the impetus for looking at a new location at QEW/Walkers a while back.

Panattoni's new warehouse in the Red Hill Business Park has building permits filed. At nearly 500,000sf, it would be one of the largest in the city.

Another big industrial application in the red hill business park. This is for an actual manufacturing facility and not a warehouse this time, too. 550,000sf or so.

I recall seeing the name of the company behind this one a while ago, but can't remember it now. From what I remember it was some sort of advanced engineering manufacturing company. A big win for the city to secure.

A new facility in Hamilton specializing in corrugated products is slated to create at least 150 new jobs in the city.

Atlantic Packaging Products Ltd. hosted a ribbon-cutting ceremony for its new Nebo Road manufacturing plant on Thursday — celebrating the opening of a facility that the company has touted as “state of the art.”

The facility can produce anything from pizza boxes and the large bins that hold produce at the grocery store to consumer packaging and shipping boxes, Kelly Albert, senior vice-president of Ontario corrugated at Atlantic Packaging, told The Spectator.

All of the products are made with 100 per cent recycled materials, Albert noted.

“They can all be made here,” said Albert, adding that the facility began production in August. “It’s anything that you’d see with corrugated material.”

At full capacity, Albert said the plant will produce roughly five million square feet of corrugated material each day — which will then be distributed to customers across the province.

The facility is slated to create 150 to 200 new jobs, however, there is room for growth as time goes on, Albert said. The company is still hiring.
