City facilities to close, services to be suspended in response to new COVID-19 restrictions
December 9, 2020

The City of Edmonton will close recreation facilities and suspend in-person services in response to new provincial public health guidelines introduced this week.

Recreation Centres and City Facilities
The health and safety of recreation centre patrons and staff is our top priority. All City recreation facilities currently open to the public will close for at least 28 days after the last reserved time on Saturday, in compliance with new provincial restrictions. While outdoor ice surfaces will continue to be available for use, park pavilions at outdoor ice surfaces will be closed, with access only permitted to washroom facilities. Victoria Park Skating Oval and IceWay, and The Meadows Community Recreation Centre outdoor leisure ice will remain open with new safety measures in place. The Rundle Park IceWay is expected to open on Friday, Dec. 11.

Cross-country skiing trails, walking trails and toboggan hills remain open with physical distancing and social gathering restrictions in place.

The City will continue to offer virtual fitness classes, such as Zumba, Yoga, Tabata and Bootcamp. Edmontonians can register at MoveLearnPlay.edmonton.ca.

The Prince of Wales Armouries and the Orange Hub will remain open to tenants only. All public health guidelines in these facilities remain in place and must be followed.

Ride Transit Program Passes
With recreation centres closing as of Dec. 13, in-person sales of monthly Ride Transit Program passes will be suspended. Passes can still be purchased online 24/7 at ride.edmonton.ca or by calling 780-423-RIDE (7433) Monday-Friday, from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Passes purchased online or by phone can be purchased using credit card, VISA Debit, Debit Mastercard or prepaid VISA/Mastercard. Alternatively, regular priced fare products, including tickets for occasional riders, can be purchased at retail sales outlets.

Edmonton Valley Zoo
The City is evaluating the full impacts of the new restrictions on zoo operations and will provide more information in the coming days. Zoominescence will remain open to ticket holders through Dec. 12 and an update will be provided as soon as possible for dates after Dec. 12. Patrons must adhere to public health guidelines while visiting the zoo.

Something I’ve been wondering about. With a global pandemic taking place why are the big pharma companies allowed to keep the recipe to their secret formula. If this information was shared around the globe university labs and other facilities with the help of govts could be pumping out vaccines around the world and have everyone enoculated within a month or two. This is not the time to be recognizing patent law and have thousands die each day. The phizers and other company ceos and owners should be arrested for holding us ransom and maybe even murder. They hold us hostage with their secret formulas collecting billions of dollars from govts worldwide. What a screwed up planet.

I was hoping that Trudeau would purchase a successful vaccine recipe to mass produce a generic version of the vaccine in Canada. I am still shocked that Canada has no facilities to mass produce vaccines.

We used to have vaccine production capabilities when Connaught Labs was publicly-owned, but after the Mulroney Government privatized it, capacity went down considerably, leading to where we are now.

People like to blame Harper (some people like to blame Harper for everything) but on this front it’s probably mistaken. They say he should have funded more and not allowed the sale of some facilities (to France if I’m not mistaken) but the real culprit is probably Canada’s patent and pharmaceutical regulations which combined with disadvantageous R&D credits simply make Canada an unattractive place to spend billions of high risk dollars on R&D and manufacturing. Is there a trade off for earlier entry into our market for generic manufacturers that lower some drug costs for Canadians? That’s the intention but now having to rely on others for anything high risk and high cost as a result is the price we’re currently paying. I’m a diabetic, have high blood pressure, heart disease and poor lungs plus being a senior citizen. I get it I’m done for. Walking on eggshells that are laying on thin ice. They should have closed the airports right away. People could use the phone instead of travelling. Only now are they starting to do something with fly in covid. YYC already has 39 flights with people having covid19 since they started to keep track. They closed the border for auto traffic but let the planes continue to fly over it ✈️

I agree with you. And despite Ken trying to sanitize the politics of what has happened: it is fact that both Mulroney and Harper Conservatives were hell-bent on privatizing Canada health industry including vaccine manufacturing. It is that privatization mindset of the Conservative Party that has put Canada in this most difficult position now. This includes the lust for free trade which has resulted in Canada not even able to manufacturer PPE. Its sad - but blame can be laid where it is deserved and not hidden or baffle gabbed.

More support for Edmontonians in the fight against COVID-19

The City of Edmonton has approved a funding agreement for community groups across the city to provide multilingual, targeted support to people at high risk of COVID-19 transmission.

Approximately $1.5 million will be distributed to community groups throughout Edmonton. The City received the funding from the Government of Alberta to create a COVID Care Team to implement outreach activities in collaboration with local community partners.

“We’re happy to partner with community groups to help flatten the COVID-19 curve. By providing dignified, culturally safe, timely and relevant support and information to people from disproportionately impacted communities, we aim to improve their wellbeing,” said City Manager Andre Corbould. “This on-the-ground approach will help ensure the right supports and information are provided in the right way to those who need it most.”

Communities most at risk of community spread of COVID-19 include areas where there are:
Households with members who are front-line workers.
People who encounter language barriers.
High density and multi-generational households.

The funding will be used by community groups, working in collaboration with each other, for a resource hub that includes:
Creating response-based teams of agencies who coordinate the delivery of emergency services:
Food coordination
In-kind financial assistance and non-food emergency needs
Mental health support
Providing timely information and recommendations on system gaps to all levels of government regarding proper supports for people impacted by COVID-19.
Establishing a shareable but simple database that captures levels of needs and allows real time data analysis and sharing.
