Another realtor drone update, :haha: William Street, in Georgestown, which was the city's first purpose-built suburb in the 1800s, today indistinguishable from the rest of the core. It and nearby Bannerman Park (including our former Parliament, the Colonial Building) are mostly former bog so the land was empty for most of our history.

The old roof on the right that's similar to The Rooms is, bizarrely, completely unrelated to it. That's St. Bonaventure's College, private Roman Catholic school (I think the oldest still functioning in the city?), and The Rooms is based on traditional, rural fishermen's sheds.

https://i.postimg.cc/L8BsgXmY/1294244-3.jpg

The hill hides most of downtown even in this area, where it's not all that steep. That beige building on the top right (former tobacco factory, now condos. I forget the name) is SO far from the water in reality.

Anyhow, top left, Barnes Road, that's where Georgestown begins. It's mostly out of frame above, and a bit to the left.

I love St. John's but wow, The Rooms drives me nuts. It always looks photoshopped in. I know that is kinda what they were going for but man...

I have looked at it as an architectural manifestation of rural dominance in Atlantic Canadian politics. We have šxʷƛ̓ənəq Xwtl'e7énḵ Square here and St. John's has to have giant fishing shacks. It cannot have some sleek Scandinavian looking museum that would make rural voters uncomfortable or jealous. Maybe this is too jaded. :haha:

Great shots, when did the tradition of bright coloured homes start?

SignalHillHiker Feb 4, 2026 8:58 AM

The bright colours started in the 1970s as part of civic campaign, and have gotten brighter over time. It's also spread to modern subdivisions and rural communities.

There was always colour, of course, with wooden homes - but they were often dark (burgundy, forest green, etc.), common (white, seafoam), or even stretches of a half dozen or more homes all the same colour.

It only started in the 70's! What a great idea they had back then.

It was considered very progressive (sort of postmodern), but I even think The Rooms does have some Scandinavian influence as well. It was designed by the brother of the artist who brought us the modern NL provincial flag. I don't like the unforgiving scale and brutal literalism of it, lacking in subtlety and the finer detail which would be more in keeping with the rest of the city. I think it also evokes some subtle religious connotation too, I mean it's kind of like the Holy Trinity made manifest, even churches don't do that. ;)

This was partly because of air pollution too, there was lots of smoke and soot when homes were heated with coal, and industries did pretty much whatever they wanted; light colours could look very dirty. I'd still like to see some representation of those dark trad colours though.

Great photo!

Also nice shots of Quebec, although it appears they have a giant pink Peeping Pierre Problem..

Nice pics Rico - looking forward to going back to Montreal later this year. That one pic with the piping on the roof looks like a giant metallic tarantula about to consume a building.. Funny, tarantulas seem to have faded in the public imagination as something to be feared. Bigger worries in the world I guess, lol.

Ok, a few from last week in Victoria, I'll only repeat one from the few I posted in the weather thread.

great pics GS! I noticed being out and about today that everywhere is just exploding with flowers and blossoms. We'll definitely be hitting peak blossom in February this year as some trees are already losing them with leaves coming in.

It is a real estate photo but I thought this one was nevertheless interesting. A pretty standard neighbourhood of box-like rowhouses in the North End of Halifax, the kind of areas that don't get photographed much, but make up the heart of the city in some ways and a lot of the local experience.

There is a trend toward more muted colours, although closer in it's still more colourful. It used to be more common to see bright colours and the old scourge was light blue vinyl siding on low end homes. Now a lot of renovated ones are grey.

AI is getting better. The Basilica doesn't look like that, O'Donnell Hall is different. Confederation Building doesn't look that skinny even in a blurry background. But a lot of the foreground is pretty much spot on.
