there are a lot of confusing things about these renderings.... which makes me a bit cautious about the project.
BUT..... there is a cool aesthetic going on that I hope manifests. !!!!!

Yeah. But, a LPC representative would not have gone on record saying that this tower would qualify as a supertall if it was not for real. Will it get built? Who knows? I hope it does! I love it.

hard for me to imagine something that tall on the skyline but it will be great if it comes to fruition. Once you get that, next stop is a 1500' skyscraper to compete with Willis Tower (Sears Tower)

It really won't be much taller than their current tallest under construction - the 848' 6xGuadalupe building. Basically, it's 6XG + a Moonlight Tower.

Hello fellow michigander! I don't fault you for leaving the cold behind one bit. So many transplants in Austin. Before covid I did Uber full time and most of my passengers would tell me like none of their drivers are natives.

I really hope this gets built. Every time I'd make that right onto Red River from Ceasar Chavez and see the barren landscape and trees and fencing I just knew it was only a matter of time. They better not touch that ihop though. All the bars on Rainey can go but not the iHop! ;)

Seems to be a lot of Michigan and Pennsylvania transplants in Austin. They really hate the cold I guess.

And Iowa. I can't count the number of people I've met from Iowa in the Austin area.

I count approximately 65 floors. My guess is the garage floors count as 1-12 (or whatever) then the building floors start at 21 or so, leaving floors 13-20 to the imagination. In any case, I love the design.

So, I really would be fine with both designs, but there are elements of each that I like more than the other has.

I really like the curved facade in the 2nd set of renderings we saw. It gives the building a more organic look, which is a good thing in Austin, especially for a building that will be fronting the river in such a major way. That curved design also totally challenges every idea in Austin so far. I also like the way the roof overhangs the tower here.

One thing I'm not so crazy about are the horizontal balconies which just seem so...basic for a tower that has an otherwise wild design. The rest of the facade, too, is pretty boring and basic. The amenity setbacks are ok, but I'm not crazy about them. I also feel like they could do more with the crown here. It's a bit boring actually. This design is more daring as far as the curved facade goes, but the details are less daring and that seems odd. I also think the podium feels cold and uninviting and is in stark contrast to the landscape, and not in a good way. I'm less crazy about the curved design from this view. It just looks odd to me. It looks good in the other view, but here it looks strange somehow. I guess I'd say it looks obnoxious and a bit destracting.

So, I really don't mind the straight facade here and the angled office portion of the project. It's less daring, but still looks good. What I like best about this design is the facade. I really love it. And while I think the crown could use some tweaking here, overall I like it especially the vertical members, which I mentioned before that I think could be lit spectacularly. I like seeing that theme carried down through the tower to the amenity setback and to the podium. I really like the warmer feel of the podium on this design. What I notice about this design is that it complements the Four Seasons Residences and even the Lakeside Apartments, which, admittedly, are probably not long for this world. There also seems to be those same burnt orange color accents going up the tower between the joints in the facade. Or maybe that's just an optical illusion.

I do think that the crown here appears a bit overbearing and could be toned down a bit. It's really too tall, at least from this view. Still, those vertical members in the crown would really light up the skyline. The other design is less impressive and offers fewer lighting possibilities.

The crown just looks like something you would throw on top of a Chili's. There's nothing elegant or refined about it. I get this is Austin, but if we're talking about the tallest building, let's add some class to the mix please.

I think both designs are pretty meh, but whatever they do design for the roof, it needs to be something to support some good opportunities for lighting. This is after all going to be our new tallest. I wanna see that crown from 20+ miles away.

The crown looks like a tabernacle in the sky complete with a pipe organ. I don't go to church but I'd consider turning religious for that view.

At over 2.5 million square feet this is going to be a wide thick building even at 1000' tall. It's going to be absolutely massive and dwarf anything else in town.....I feel like the renderings understate this.

There is a very real chance this project could cost over a billion dollars...which would be over twice any other downtown building in Austin's history.

As an avid skyscraper nerd from way back I can confidently say we all know what we are waiting for in a new tallest. I like a modern contemporary with a unique strong statement.. 90s - early 00s was a prime timeframe for quality skyscrapers. Adding in residential and a utilitarian type 2020 use makes these new designs less than steller and not visually appealling. That said I dont hate this design but really want a stunning strong tower to say this is Austin on the skyline. Holding out hope for that to happen around republic square.
