Last night I noticed that Fluid has shut down, with a sign on the door implying a spring reopening. Are they renovating, rebranding or what?

Coldrsx Feb 17, 2014 2:16 AM

Kinda sad how that place turned out...

rapid_business Feb 18, 2014 3:51 PM

It went from one of the only new bars downtown.... to looking a little warn down with duct tape on the seats.... to staying that way and getting worse for the past 6 years. A reno and rebrand is looooong over due.

There were 2 signs...the other was an ALCB Notice stating the licence is SUSPENDED in bold colour.

I was hoping for prairie-styled serving of roasts, but if you took the patty out of, say the Chic-Hog-O burger, it's pretty much a slab of roast. That being said, it was okay. Price not bad for what it serves.

We also dined there - had the charcuterie plate for starters, a bottle of red, partner had some spaghetti and pork dish loaded with cheese, i had a pork sandwich (quite good), finished with an amazing carrot cake. The cake was the best think we ate. The above would have served 4 people so we had leftovers. Overall ok + - but we would not return.

No kidding. That was the best people watching patio in the city. Remember the $3 or 4 Guinness happy hour? So much potential.

Coldrsx Feb 19, 2014 3:10 PM

^yup, those were the days haha. $3-4 any draught and a great people watching corner.

I'd love to see a proper diner go in there, similar to Dadeo's.

That must be a really old notice, there hasn't been an ALCB since, what, the early 90s?

I kid, I kid. But seriously, it's the AGLC.

Hit up Izakaya Tomo last night. The Tonpei Yaki is my new favourite dish, I think.

fyi Druid's happy hour is the same, $3 if I remember correctly.... that includes Innis & Gunn pints which surprised me!

CanadianCentaur Feb 20, 2014 9:13 PM

^ Yes, it's $3, but they're served in 14 oz shakers, not proper full pints.

They are a 12 ounce glass not a 20 oz pint. Places like Craft and Canadian Brewhouse play the "pint" game where they call 12 or 16 ounces a pint on at Happy Hour. It should be illegal to sell beer without stating ounces on sandwich boards and menus and inferring its a pint. You would think there would be regulations around that...stating what a pint is in Canada. Weights and measures to protect consumers. Where are the regulators???

Xelebes Feb 20, 2014 11:25 PM

Most people don't know what an ounce is anymore. I don't. Just call it a glass, and a pint glass for a glass made for beer.

Sherlocks for example only pour 20 ounces "Brit" pint which is what Canadians expect. Some places give you a "US" pint which is not a pint but 16oz. Places that like to screw you don't tell you what the f your getting - but charge 3-5 during happy hr - a serve a 12 ounce glass of beer. Thats the bitch. Most beer drinkers know the games being played downtown and eslewhere and where they can always get a true 20 ounce pint. We just avoid ones that try to play games like Cdn Brewhouse and Craft downtown.

Went to North 53 the other night, one word.... awesome!!! Food was amazing, I recommend the chicken and the lamb tartare. Portions are smaller than I'm used to but expected in this kind of establishment and reflected in quality. As for the drinks, Smoke+Oak was recommended and thought the server was just upselling me being the priciest drink. But nope, this drink is actually really good I definitely recommend. They really did their homework, even the service was great, very friendly and informative of every dish.

Definitely going back to finish the menu and some more smoke+oaks.

Cafe tiramisu last night, such a great place.

Checked out Daravara, sparse but I kinda liked it. Staff was friendly, would like to try the menu next time.

There's probably a lot more bars and other places than what's shown on that CBC article which open for the Canada-Sweden game at 5 am - I know that the Druid, On the Rocks and various Brewsters locations (incl. Oliver Square) will be open for the game that morning.

EdmTrekker Feb 22, 2014 9:26 PM

Cold, what did you have at Cafe Timarsu? I have never been - so curious what you liked. Food, beverages, atmosphere? I am not even sure I know where it is and I live in the core.

124st, 108ave on the corner.

Didn't eat last night, but others did and it looked very good. Went a couple times ^in the summer, salads and quinoa, pizza, creme brule. Good beer selection, wines.

Atmosphere is perfect, modern, comfortable, bright, live music that was not overly loud.

I don't go enough to this place.

Went by Privada in St Albert last night after the Irrelevant Show taping. This is a little wine bar on St anne and Peron. They have been around for about 24 months now, owned by a young couple. The food has been hit and miss the last year as they have been going through chefs. I will say I like the new chef and menu change. All cured meats are done in-house from locally sourced suppliers. The charcuterie is worth a trip. The cheese could use some work and local sourcing but still good. The breads are done in house as well. The caramelized onion tarts are great, did not try to much as it was late and I had a 12 hour day. But their beer and wine selection is very good as well. The place was packed at 10 pm. Glad these kids are making a go of it. Looking forward to the sumer on the patio.

Thanks for the pics. I'll be there soon, and can't wait to get back to the Mikado, along with many of Coba's other fine restaurants.

Some of those dipping sauces were phenomenal with the tenderloin.

Downtown Dining Week announces new restaurants taking part

The 11th annual festival of good eating in our burgeoning downtown offers diners the chance to dine at roughly 30 core establishments – at a very, very good price. Between March 14 and 23, guests can enjoy lunch or dinner for $15, $25 or $50 at some of the finest downtown eateries.

Each restaurant designs a custom, specialty-priced menu exclusively for Downtown Dining Week. Each price level comes with a selection of appetizers, entrees and desserts.

This year, the new entries to the fun are The Burg, Confederation Lounge (at the Fairmont Hotel Macdonald), De Dutch Pannekoek House, Fiona MacCool’s, Norman’s Bistro and Tavern 1903.

Checked out the new District Coffee Co on 100 ave and 109 st....minimalistic space in keeping with Nate's other locations, packed to the brim with acetate frames and vintage handbags.

Great vibes and pot pie, but I desperately wish that they had gone with a roaster other than Phil and Sebastian (I have always found their product sour as sh!t). Local please!

240glt Mar 4, 2014 8:53 PM

I wonder what happened to that coffee roaster that was supposed to open on 111th ave just east of 95th street ?

I don't know if that's the same guy I'm thinking of, but Iconoclast Coffee is roasting out of the former Vivid lighting on 105 ave. Very much worth a trip to check out their space and espresso bar. They're not officially open but they are happily greeting passersby who poke their head in. Awesome single origin espresso!
