Nice video - brought back fond memories from my visit a few years back. I know people complain about the parking lots, but it doesn't really interfere with the main strip downtown experience. Moncton has a really solid downtown with his restaurants and retail especially for its size. You can tell them business owners have pride in their city. It also feels like it can easily make the transition from a smaller to a mid sized Canadian city as it has a good foundation and things seem to continue to be headed in the right direction. It has the old Calgary "can-do” attitude but in a more low key way

Completely agree about these points.

It appears to be quite clean too. Even the rail underpass(es). And I didn't notice any empty storefronts.

Perhaps Moncton has a grittier side, but it was not apparent from that video.

Really nice Victoria set. Some of the older homes remind me of Portland.

I did a grey day walk around the (seemingly) abandoned concrete wastelands of Central Gatineau (Île de Hull) yesterday.

Great fresh set Harley613!

You captured something colourful or slightly quirky in every single shot - very nice! What’s going on in the final picture - a reclad of a former office building into residential? I hope so that would be awesome with inset balconies like that.

TorontoDrew- thanks - and yes Pacific North West vibes no doubt. Portland is an interesting city in itself - long in Seattle’s shadow, but it emerged from that. I find it ‘weird’ that Portland purposely tries to be weird on purpose, which then negates true weirdness if that makes any sense, lol.

Really nice Victoria February set Zoomer. Damn, that small city looks good.

That's La Terrasses de la Chaudière, the second tallest building in Ottawa-Gatineau, but for only another couple of years until the Renaissance Marriott and Dream Lebreton overtake it. It probably won't be in the top ten in 5-7 years. The entire complex is being gutted to the concrete and getting a glassy reclad. It will remain federal offices. The floor plates are absolutely massive, so this one would be a difficult residential conversion.

Rico Rommheim Mar 3, 2024 8:46 PM

Nice and vibrant Ottawa set there too. Ottawa at ground level is also so lively.

Always nice to see Victoria.

I though the Gatineau pics were St. John at first.

Really like that set of Montreal above. Some nice layers of architecture there!

Rico Rommheim - what’s the story in this picture? I can’t believe I totally missed out knowing about this development.

First off, that’s the way to build on top of a heritage building - the physical separation, especially allowing the top of the original structure to breathe. It doesn’t look like a tacky facade restoration with an incompatible skyscraper crushing on it from above. Also love the new building on top of it. And what’s the grey office building right beside it? When was it built - before or after its neighbour? A 30 plus storey blank wall that looks interesting because of the window impressions - very interesting.

Rico Rommheim Mar 5, 2024 12:11 AM

Yeah the entity tower is surprisingly nice, and the faddism is top tier I'd say. The black tower next door was built almost at the same time as Enticy. I think a year or so beforeghand.

It's actually a 120m rental tower called apartments dorchester. I really like it, another case of a recent Montreal Neo-brutalist that looks good.

When viewed within the skyline, the dorchester looks like it's been there since the 1960's

Imagine if instead of an ocean of asphalt you had a street with nice paving stones, some public seating where you could appreciate the Brutalist architecture, and only a little bit of space for cars. At the moment it's an afterthought and yet it's the main access point to the city's central train station.

I'm hoping McMinsen or Giallo got some shots today of the fresh snowfall on Vancouver's local mountains on a rare sunny day!
