I drove by today and the crane base is in, with encroachment on Brenton Street. It looks like a new Potain base. Lead seems to stick with this manufacturer, tower sections would be inter-changeable on most models. Rapicon does rental and sales for Potain, their website shows a few luffing job options. Typically you can see the Rapicon name on the counter jib of most of Lead’s cranes.
“Developments HFX” on Facebook a photos of it, they usually have updated photos on the weekend of various construction sites. |
Crane assembly started today.

Looks like they are making progress. Now that I think of it this has got to be in the running for most dramatic construction project. First hit by a hurricane that caused a crane collapse then continued through a pandemic.

Is that part on the right part of Brenton or South Park Lofts?
|
The part on the right is the back of South Park Lofts.

|
This is topped out now.
|
This crane looked to be on the way down today.

Hopefully it stays local and isn't shipped off again.

Halifax Developments Blog (Photo by David Jackson) So if the crane is down does this mean we have to retire the windy day jokes? :haha: |

Has there been any update on the South Park Loft building? Over the summer it looked like the damage had been repaired and work was continuing but the past ~6 months it looks like not much progress has been made. |
No photos unfortunately but I did notice the developers are changing their Post-Bonus Height Public Benefit to undergrounding utilities. I drove by the site today and the new lights are being installed. It's quite the improvement so far. With the recent street changes and upcoming Spring Garden Streetscaping this summer the area should have a fresh new look for the post-Covid era.

A report on the public benefit component of the development, covering undergrounding of utilities and a lit entryway:

The report on the crane collapse was dumped this afternoon, right around the time Rankin & Strang's COVID-19 update began. |

I walked by this the other day and I didn't realize the back elevation was all brick. It actually looks quite nice for a backside of a building.

It is interesting to contrast this with its next-door neighbor, the Trillium. The Trillium was initiated and designed in 2007, so not all that long ago. But Brenton Suites makes it look like a 1980s building by comparison, at least when comparing the exteriors and finish choices.
|
It does fit in that block well and even blends the 5 story beside it naturally. The step backs help make the street not feel loomed over and adds to the verticle experience. But Keith roaches it with a needle, it already looks dated and it isn't even finished yet. Although, for what the building stock around the locale looks like, that isn't so much a bad thing, I guess, as it will look like it's been there all the while.

According to CBRE's Commercial Leasing PDF four of the six retail units have been leased. Anybody have any insider knowledge on what might be moving into this building?

Unfortunately I don't hold any hope that some sort of cessation of 'Maritime Life Building-type of demolitions to be replaced with mediocre developments' is going to happen; and still the quality of architecture/finishes appears to be just hit-and-miss in actuality. That said, even if "what I want" doesn't happen, I'm glad to see more residential buildings going up. This housing crisis isn't going to fix itself - we need more supply to relax the demand and (hopefully) result in more affordable places to live for everybody. |

This looks pretty much done from the street now. Upper levels almost completely cladded. Cute chocolate shop/cafe at street level. I think it turned out very well!
