These are gorgeous Rico. I hope that once the Windsor station restoration are done, that they will put on a proper illumination scheme. It is one of the most stunning historic landmark in Montreal and it deserves the royal treatment, like the Sun Life building nearby. It’s a little sad to see it plunged in darkness like in the second to last picture. A proper lighting scheme would be welcome also for the spectacular dome of the cathedral accross the park.

Windsor Station is glorious. It is a real shame they cut the tracks. I recall getting off right outside the station, in the track shed, during the 70s-80s. Then it was cut to before the track shed. Then cut again when the Molson/Bell centre was built (and the shitty stub station that replaced the original terminus).

Agreed, they should never have stop using it as a station. But nonetheless, the building still stands in all its glory and the restoration is beautifully done.

Agreed. Every once in a while a city has a monumental lapse of judgement that permanently de-values the city. Windsor Station was Montreal's big folly of the last 50 years. I suspect Toronto's will be the Rail Deck Park fiasco. The big knock on Toronto is the lack of a big downtown park. The City talks endlessly of the need to build green space in parallel with population growth but lets lot after lot after lot slip through its fingers.
Rail Deck Park is Toronto's very last chance yet it's now caved and approved the construction of condo towers over the rail lines. It will permanently reduce the quality of life of Torontonians forever. It's not like one can fix this after the buildings have gone up. The argument that it's impossible due to a lack of funds is absolute rubbish. You put a levy of 2% on every new condo unit that goes up. It's not like customers facing a $600,000 price will suddenly balk when it goes up to $612,000. Developers will go ballistic but who cares? The City needs to grow a spine, make a 2% levy standard, and it should be viewed as the cost of doing business in Toronto. Amenities like a big downtown park will only make Toronto more desirable. It would pay for itself quickly by ways of increased tourism alone. The lack of foresight by the City is astonishing. |
Thanks Martin!
And yes, I too have always been bitter at Windsor's fate, even though we got lucky that they didn't pull off a Penn station. Lucien L'Allier is truly the worst replacement we could have gotten, but at the same time I understand that Windsor was completely obsolete the second CP stopped running passenger trains. Windsor was a terminus, so I would not have worked for VIA's operations. |
Absolutely gorgeous, Ryan! ^

The stone heritage building partially collapsed in 2018. It has been stabilized, but no plans to restore at this time. The City and owner are too busy in the courts, which is a story that's far too common in Ottawa. https://pbs.twimg.com/media/E2lE0CVW...jpg&name=small https://twitter.com/mchkzn/status/1398724829667287046 https://pbs.twimg.com/media/E2lEEqDX...g&name=900x900 https://twitter.com/mchkzn/status/1398724015364132870 |

Interesting. Most places I've lived in Toronto are 3 storeys with three units - basement, main floor and 2/3rd floor apartments. For the majority of these, the backyard is considered shared space, though usually one of the units ends up taking care of it and uses it most. In my current apartment on the second floor our back entrance has a staircase directly down to the yard, and to access the third floor apartment you need to use an external staircase in the back. We all share the space, though my wife and I make the most use of it. |
The Montreal triplexes usually have a rear balcony on the second and third floors so you get that instead of the yard. A lot of the time they are pretty big and/or have views -- I have lived in apartments where the balcony was the better option than the yard.

Took a little walk around the neighbourhood a few days ago...

Looking at them compressed mountain shots from Vancouver reminds me of being able to see the White Mountains from St-Jacques viaduct in Montreal, on a clear day, early in the morning.
Do these photos exist? Martin-Mtl.. you must have some. |
Those are some beautiful brick buildings covered by sh*tty graffiti in Montreal. I know most cities have given up the fight against graffiti - but it pisses me off how a few losers get away with this.
|
Wow they really tagged the crap out of the rosemont viaduct. It was clear when I lived there circa 09-14'
