So the Kansas City Wizards (MLS) broke ground on their new stadium and I must say it's pretty nice. MLS is really coming into it's own in terms of stadium design.

The Houston Dynamo's stadium is expected to break ground in October, with a projected opening by April of 2012, before the season starts. Just gotta love the location next to Downtown, the only soccer stadium so close to a city's downtown. In the Dynamo's case, literally next door. I don't know why people keep building their stadiums in the suburbs.

anyway, renderings of the new Grêmio Arena stadium, for 52.500 people (all seater, for official FIFA matches) or 58.000 people (with part of the seats being one of the goals removed, because fans like terraces).

Is that being built on the site of the old Orange Bowl?

bobdreamz Apr 23, 2010 9:03 AM

^ yes it is. In the satellite pic below the old Orange Bowl can be seen and it's being built in the heart of Little Havana.

http://img188.imageshack.us/img188/5...linsmarina.png

The parking surrounding the Orange Bowl will become 4 highrise garages and the county has long range plans to extend Metrorail to the ballpark which currently has 2 stations less than a mile away.

Buckeye Native 001 Apr 23, 2010 12:25 PM

Really doesn't sound like they could've built it in a better place than Little Havana, given the popularity of baseball in Cuba. I don't remember: Do we have renderings elsewhere in this thread?

I don't think those are the actual new uniforms....from what I've heard, orange is going to become a major color for the logo and uniforms...
I was just up in the Santa Maria on Brickell a couple of days back, and the view of the ballpark from there is amazing!
Can't wait to start watching games there!

I just found out about this one. Where have I been

Thats a lot of money for 500 extra seats.

http://www.umich.edu/stadium/

The stadium renovation project will include preservation of the existing structure and enhancements that will improve the game-day experience for all fans. Planning has been under way for more than three years. Construction is scheduled to begin at the end of the 2007 football season and to be completed by August 2010.

Improvements will include:

Wider seats and aisles with handrails to make it easier for fans to use the aisles.
New elevated concourses with additional restrooms and concessions along both sidelines.
More seating for fans with impaired mobility along the sidelines.
Two new buildings on the north end of the stadium that will house additional restrooms, concessions and public safety services.
A new building on the south end of the stadium that will offer additional concessions and restrooms.
A new press box for media and game operations.
Refurbished restroom facilities.
650+ new chairback seats on the west side.
49 suites in the west side structure (36 suites located on the first level and 13 suites on the second level).
1,900+ outdoor club seats and stadium lounge on the first level of the east side structure.
250+ indoor club seats and 850+ covered outdoor club seats and stadium lounge on the second level of the east side structure.
36 suites on the third level of the east side structure.
Four towers, one at the end of each sideline structure, with elevators and wide stairways to bring patrons to the new concourses and enclosed seating areas.

Seating of more than 108,000 compared to the present 107,501.

The expected cost of $226 million will be funded through private donations and Athletic Department resources, primarily the revenues generated by the new seating.

the videos above bring me the question: do any of the other stadiums shown in this thread have this level of fan participation and support? Any videos showing it?

The_Architect Oct 28, 2010 1:06 PM

I'm surprised there's a thread on great stadiums, and no mention of the Stade Olympique in Montreal..
I'm a Toronto and Blue Jays fan, but I love this stadium..

Tallest freestanding slanted structure in the world:
http://www.canadiandesignresource.ca...Gauche_CDR.jpg
http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4033/...7ea0fd7d_z.jpg

It may have been a financial failure (3rd most expensive stadium ever built, City of Montreal just finished paying it off),
and the interior wasn't even complete in time for the 1976 opening ceremonies,
but it is still a great stadium nonetheless, one of the best in Canada.

Vancouver's BC Place stadium renewal / retractable roof addition

Vancouver' BC Place stadium is undergoing a mid-life upgrade. The primary undertaking has been the removal of the air-supported teflon roof and the ongoing installation of a cable-supported retractable teflon roof. The opening at the centre will be 80metres by 110 metres. Significant upgrades to the building include new public washrooms and concession stands, new seats, new luxury and media boxes, new elevators, and many upgrades to electrical and mechanical systems. A large casino-hotel development will be built adjacent to the stadium and integrated into it.

The Marlins' ballpark is really looking great!
I saw it yesterday driving south on I95....Can't wait until next Spring!
Uniform and logo reveal are going to be sometime in November...I got a connection, so hopefully it will be on a day off, so I can get over there...

Ok, I was just in Miami in December and i pride my self in noticing construction - how the hell did i miss this thing. It looks great.

Where exactly is it?

brickell Mar 17, 2011 3:52 PM

Little Havana, just west of downtown.

On the site of the old Orange Bowl stadium....
You can see it from I95...

Here is one I took recently of the stadium from the south side of False Creek behind the temporarily named "Hinge Park".

I love this next pic since you can see the downtown skyline through the glass panels looking east:
