my wife knew the 2 most recent chicago homicides, the two teenagers who were shot and killed trying to rob a liquor store over the weekend, they were former students at the the middle school she used to teach at in auburn gresham. she remembered one of them right away as one of the most difficult and troubled students that she ever had in her entire teaching career.

that makes for a total of 7 former students of hers that have been gunned down on chicago's violent streets. depressing.

That's remarkable and depressing.

i wish it was remarkable, but i would have to imagine that most chicago teachers who've spent a good deal of time teaching in chicago's most violent and crime-ridden neighborhoods could make similar such lists of former students who've been gunned down.

Oh wow that's surprising, Ottawa is not off to a very good start then.
(By Ottawa standards).

I've lived in Canada for 18 years & I've only ever known 1 Person that was a Victim of Homicide. (& albeit I never knew that person directly but the Boyfriend who was the killer, but she went to my High School).

Denver - 51
Omaha - 50
Seattle - 22

Columbus just had a triple murder which brings the total so far this year to at least 8 homicides. Not a good start to the year at all.

Well, yeah. Probably 99% of people in the world don't know any homicide victims, Chicago included.

The point is that you don't work in an inner city school of African American kids in the U.S. If you did, you would be likely to know of homicide victims. Homicide is the #1 cause of death for young black men.

wait, are you saying that only 1% of chicagoans know a murder victim?

given that ~36,000 chicagoans have been murdered over the past 50 years, i'd find that incredibly hard to believe.

maru2501 Jan 12, 2016 6:37 PM

plenty of shootings last night during a snowstorm, including homicide #20 already

125 shot to date, first 12 days
