So, I was looking around on the Planning Commission website and I found this schematic of Shoal Creek Walk. It looks like it's going to be split into two buildings, which I guess is kinda cool. The taller one will be 120 ft., the smaller one will be 60 ft. And I can't tell how tall the parking garage will be.

http://i.imgur.com/9cSXaPy.jpg

I forget exactly what was originally planned there, so if this is a big downgrade, that sucks. But at least it's something? And hopefully the uniqueness of it will make up for its small size. Here's a link to the PDF if you want to look at it closer.

Also, I found a site plan for 7Rio.

Here's a link to that PDF.

I'm not disappointed at all w/ Shoal Creek Walk. The original proposal wasn't stellar in design anyway, and this will still add vibrancy and density to the area that is important.

A tower crane permit request was filed for 7 Rio:

Here's another tower crane permint that was filed this week for Block 51. I guess that's the IBC bank offices.

It's funny how that worked out. I was downtown yesterday and wanted to get photos of Gables, but I ran out of day light. I mostly ended up around Rainey Street/Congress.

I wish there was a project like the one on Waller Creek to make Shoal Creek run more steadily. They call the Waller Creek project a "flood diversion tunnel" but really the main objective is to pump water upward from Lady Bird Lake to get the creek water running steadily to make for a more pleasant experience.

lzppjb Apr 4, 2013 7:19 AM

I've been thinking the exact same thing since they announced the plans a few years ago for Waller. Shoal Creek would be awesome with running water all the time.

migol24 Apr 4, 2013 7:53 AM

I totally agree! Shoal Creek is much prettier too, imo.

The Waller Creek tunnel is most definitely a flood diversion project. It has taken about a dozen square blocks of downtown out of the floodplain and has opened them up for much more intense development. This represents a huge return on investment for the City because of the increased revenues from property taxes. The water pumping is a plus - certainly a nice addition to the project, but the tunnel would never have been built for that purpose alone.

Exactly. The water pumping should at best be seen as an ancillary incentive to developers to develop this portion of downtown in a sort-of "community vibrancy" mentality. The main purpose has and will always be to remove a significant portion of land from the floodplain.

The crane base is set at Streetlights at Barton Springs. I'm betting they'll be putting up the crane next weekend, no doubt postponing it this weekend. South Congress is a madhouse right now with the Lone Star Rod & Kustom Roundup.

Are the hot rods all over the place? Or just people?

Cars and people. There was a ton of traffic on South Congress between the bridge and Oltorf. People were sitting out in lawn chairs with coolers watching the cars. Others were walking on the sidewalk and spilling over into the bike lanes taking photos of the cars parked along the street.

I think the show is only Friday and Saturday. I went last year and it was closed on Sunday. If you're wanting to just see the cars, check out the actual car show at the Travis County Expo Center. They also have more to see there and more types of cars. I saw a school bus from 1936 that had been fully restored. And they also have dragsters that they even start up. That was really something to see. You can also have more time to talk to the owners and get better photos if that's what you're into.

But the scene on South Congress was neat. There were all kinds of cars. I saw people sitting out with music from the 50s and 60s playing, and of course there were some pretty cool lowriders. I saw a Lincoln parked on South Congress with hydraulics, and they had the front left wheel about 2 feet off the ground.

I tried getting photos until my battery died. I'll have to post them.

lzppjb Apr 7, 2013 11:51 PM

I did end up driving down Congress last night around midnight. It was almost like I was in a badass car parade, but I was just in a regular ol' Silverado. Saw a ton of old cars. People were enjoying themselves. Seeing all those amazing hot rods and muscle cars on South Congress brought a tear to my eye (well almost).

4,000 new hotel rooms on the way to Austin area

By Gary Dinges
American-Statesman Staff

The Austin area is in line for more than a dozen hotels in the next two to three years, potentially putting an end to a shortage of rooms that tourism officials say has kept the city from landing many lucrative conventions in recent years.

Combined, the hotels could make 4,000 or more additional rooms available for out-of-towners, also easing space crunches that occur during the Austin City Limits Music Festival, South by Southwest, Formula 1 events and University of Texas football games.

The city currently has about 30,000 rooms, according to figures from the Austin Convention and Visitors Bureau, while nearby San Antonio, a longtime favorite of event planners, has an estimated 40,000 rooms.

Gables, Seaholm, 3eleven, and the library will all be under construction in that area soon. All that's left is GreenWater! (And the energy control buildings, but we're not counting those yet.) Here's to hoping we hear some good news about that soon!

That will be a pretty loud neighborhood for the next few years, with all of that construction going on. But it sure is going to be fun to watch. That area of downtown is finally coming together. 2013 is turning out to be a great year for Austin after all. These projects will have a big effect on the skyline. The library will be short, the Seaholm tower will be medium-sized, and then 3eleven will be tall. So, it will be graduated. I think it will look amazing. I wish someone would create a 3D model of all these buildings.
