The new Hilton Garden Inn in downtown Flint has officially opened its doors. Lots more photos at the article link (like, an exorbitant amount) -

The design for the new Flint YMCA by AECOM-Detroit recently won the 2020 Phil Freelon National Design Award, an award given by NOMA (National Organization of Minority Architects). Phil Freelon was a minority architect who passed away last year at the age of 66. He is probably best known for being a design lead on the Smithsonian Institution's National Museum of African American History and Culture.

Sadly, the funding for this project is currently up in the air (for now) due to the pandemic.

With over 9,700 lead service lines replaced, the city estimates that it has less than 500 to go - and that they will be replaced by the end of this year. Construction on the new chemical treatment building and backup water source pipeline continue, and are scheduled to be complete in 2021. This is about as good of news as one could hope for, in this seemingly never-ending saga that is still painful for so many Flint residents - long after it has faded from national headlines, yet long from the collective stigma fading in the perceptions of those around the country & the globe.

I was in Flint briefly earlier today. Learning Commons appears to be topped out. I also noticed that work looks like its starting at 615 Louisa Street.

From Oombra's site:

PROJECT: STOREHOUSE LOFTS
LOCATION: FLINT, MI
STATUS: ONGOING
TYPE: ADAPTIVE REUSE, RESIDENTIAL LOFTS

PROJECT DESCRIPTION
Located near the campus of the University of Michigan at Flint, this existing 5-story concrete and masonry storage facility was built to stand the test of time. Once part of the Henry H. Stevens fleet of storage facilities, this building has been vacant, but well preserved for some time. We hope to bring it back to life with a minimal design approach, highlighting the beauty in the rough and rawness of the existing space. By utilizing an interlocking scissor stair, an extraordinary 85% plan efficiency allows 40 residential lofts to be inserted into the building. With a focus on shared tenant amenities, a double height "living room" and mezzanine space will be the hub of activity, with meeting rooms, a fitness space, a game room and lounge. Access to the rooftop will provide views of campus and downtown.

From the plans, it looks like that lobby will be a pretty cool interior space.

Eight New Solar Energy Sites Begin Operating in Genesee and Saginaw Counties
PRNewswire
January 08, 2021

Consumers Energy, Pine Gate Renewables and Kayne Anderson Capital Advisors, L.P., today announced five new solar energy projects in Genesee County and three in Saginaw County are now online and providing clean, renewable electricity for Consumers Energy customers.

"These solar plants coming online are a testament to our commitment to solar energy in Michigan as a major component of the Clean Energy Plan, our blueprint for a coal-free and carbon-neutral future," said Tim Sparks, vice president of electric grid integration at Consumers Energy. "We thank Pine Gate Renewables for shared beliefs in protecting our planet and for their expertise building the vital clean energy infrastructure..."
In total, this increases Consumers Energy's total solar energy capacity from 10 MW to 16 MW.

Here are some more photos of the new Owosso Memorial Healthcare Neurology Center. I promise I am not trying to turn this into an Owosso thread - it's just that this is a good-sized project for Owosso, and the CM keeps posting great photos online -

The owner of the former Riverview Industrial Park is seeking city brownfield plan approval (up to $2.5 million) for a potential $14.2 million investment in renovations & new construction. A public hearing is scheduled for March 8 - the owner wants to ambitiously start construction this Spring -

The push for a tiny house initiative in Flint is gaining steam. The effort is being led by Catholic Charities of Shiawassee and Genesee Counties, which recently purchased two parcels of land from the Genesee County Land Bank to build two model houses under 450 SF. The land is on Root St. across from Catholic Charities parking lot (I think here)? Grant moneys from the Clara Lionel Foundation (founded by Rihanna) will be used to build the homes, which are intended to serve as an example of what could be done elsewhere in the city / counties -

The millage for the Flint Public Library renovation passed yesterday.

We've been overdue for an update on this one (no pun intended).

After the bond and millage proposals passed, construction started last year to remodel the Flint Public Library. The total construction cost is around $27.6 million, $12.6 million of which is funded by public bonds, with the rest mostly from from grants and donations. The mid-century building originally opened in 1958. The remodel aims to update systems infrastructure and maximize the amount of publicly available space. The estimated completion is August 2021 -

The international auto parts supplier, Hirotec America is announcing plans to lease the former Delphi site off of Center Road.

It was once home to thousands of workers. The former Delphi facility on Flint’s east side closed its doors for good in November of 2013.

There was a massive fire in downtown Lapeer yesterday, with the result being the loss of two historic buildings in the core downtown area along Nepessing St. I believe a neighboring third building was damaged, but has not been torn down yet.

Lots of videos and pictures out there on various news sites.
