Thanks for the updates! :)

The Hilton Garden Inn is looking good! I'd love to see Huntington add a mural to the blank wall on their annex building or punch out some new windows, or both, where the driveway is going. It's begging for something.

robk1982 Aug 4, 2020 8:12 PM

There have been a ton of murals put up in Flint recently, so it wouldn't surprise me if one was added here. Windows would be great, however!

Hilton's website is accepting reservations from December 11th onwards for the Hilton Garden Inn Flint Downtown. I believe the original opening was planned for September. Glad it didn't get pushed back too much.

They are tearing down Windmill Place. I've waited for this day for a LONG time - it is such prime property in the city, but unfortunately there probably won't be anything significant built on it right now.

Genesee County passes on low bid, picks Granger to build juvenile detention center
By Ron Fonger | [email protected]

GENESEE COUNTY, MI -- The county’s new juvenile detention center will be built by a Lansing construction company at a cost of up to $20.7 million.

A divided Board of Commissioners approved the contract with Granger Construction on a 7-2 vote Wednesday, Aug. 19, passing on a bid that was approximately $300,000 less from E&L Construction of Flint.

Skip to right around the 2:00 minute mark, for a blast from the past of Windmill Place in the 1990's, when it was under the ownership of then-mayoral-candidate Don Williamson.
Hopefully something more positive than just a Family Dollar does come of this long-awaited demolition. I've tried looking for other "historic" photos of the complex, but did not find much.

As for the new juvenile center, I know nothing about E&L Construction, but Granger's reputation is solid.

Owosso, MI -

Memorial Healthcare just celebrated the topping out for its new neurology, orthopedic, rehabilitation and community wellness center. At $40 Million / 104,000 SF, this is a pretty big project for Owosso! Edmund London & Associates (Southfield, MI) is the architect - more renderings at their website. Spence Brothers (Saginaw, MI) is the CM. And Delta Steel & Tri-Steel are the erectors / fabricators for the structure.

This is on the same campus as and east of the main hospital, near M-52 / Shiawassee St. It will be connected via skywalk to the existing cancer center, as seen in the last rendering. With this project, Memorial Hospital is really upping the ante with regional competitors toward Flint, Lansing, and Saginaw.

A few more photos of construction at Owosso's Memorial Healthcare, these from about two weeks ago, also via LinkedIn. I know I know, it ain't Flint. It's not even really Flint Metro / MSA (it's technically part of Lansing / E. Lansing MSA). But it is geographically closer to downtown Flint vs. downtown Lansing so I'm including it here.

I-475 proposal imagines massive investment, new look for downtown Flint

I hope this comes to reality.
Quote:

City officials are promoting a massive project to remake I-475 in the downtown area, a proposal that calls for filling in the existing interstate, creating a boulevard route near the center of the city, and freeing up about 30 acres of new land for development.

Mayor Sheldon Neeley’s administration previewed the idea in a virtual town hall meeting Wednesday, Oct. 22, emphasizing the proposal requires much more study and approval by the Michigan Department of Transportation, but promoting it as a way to reconnect downtown with the Flint Cultural Center and surrounding neighborhoods.

Grand Blanc -

Still sounds tenuous, but good to hear that there is still momentum behind trying redevelop these large vacant retail spaces formerly occupied by a KMart and a Farmer Jack (remember those??)

Revised plan for developing former Kmart site to go before Council

October 22, 2020

GRAND BLANC — A plan to bring fresh commerce to the shuttered Kmart and Farmer Jack properties has renewed momentum after the Grand Blanc City Council reviewed amendments to the site plan last week. Birmingham-based Grand Blanc Marketplace LLC and property owner Doraid Markus have proposed a new retail/office development on the 6-acre site at 12730 Saginaw Road. The property currently contains the 86,960-square-foot building previously occupied by Farmer Jack until 2007, and Kmart until 2014...
Redevelopment of this site remains a high priority for the city, under the current Master Plan, Strategic Plan, and Redevelopment Ready Community certification requirements.

I would love to see this happen. Broadly speaking in combination with the greening & naturalization of the Flint River already underway we would be truly be looking looking at a fundamentally different and better city.

^ Yes, it would be a vast improvement!

Construction has begun on the mixed-income Georgia Manor Apartments project. This is a repurposing of a 1960's era apartment complex in Carriage Town that has been vacant for 20 years.
