Thanks for flipping the photo, Beaudry, it makes a lot more sense now. (of course :duh) ha ha

Also, thanks for turning the Lankershim negative into a positive, Scott Charles.

New info to me! The mention of Lankershim meant "boulevard" to me. I had no idea it was once a place name.

I had forgotten about the town of Lankershim too, M P.

Here is an interesting map from 1890.

'Lankershim' ceased to exist in 1927 when the name was changed to North Hollywood...No doubt to take advantage of the success of Hollywood on the other end of the Cahuenga Pass.

Of course there was a 'Toluca' too. (before the lake)

I ran across a snapshot today from the 1980s that piqued my interest because it reminded me of my former neighorhood of West Hollywood. . . .from eBay.

https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/1...923/I8ri8j.jpg
No, that isn't me.

What intrigues me is the old stone pillar(?) on the left edge of the photo. It's completely incongruous to the rest of the neighborhood.

I know that there used to be stone 'entranceways' on some city streets but I don't believe there were any in West Hollywood.

Help :whip

If that's the case the negative could be worth more money since Louise Brooks has taken on a cult-like status.

I might check some of her old films and see if I come across that outfit she has on.

Thanks Apollodorus and Martin Pal.

Update:

I just checked eBay. The negative sold for $22.50.

If it is Louise Brooks someone got a bargain.

Now about that tall metal flue. :whip:
.

I found what appears to be another photo of the "starlet" by checking the seller's sold listings which led
me to the Warner Hollywood Theatre, and The Larry Ceballos Revue.

It appears that she was indeed a dancer/chorus girl if the 2nd standing lady on the right side is her:

IMDB

It also appears to me that the tall metal flue is on the roof of the Warner Theatre based on this image:

The 2 story building with the staircase, and some of the other buildings in the negative are still around

I don't know when they put the curb further out in the street, but that's definitely the Oceana (where Stan Laurel spent his

moved into a second floor, ocean view apartment, here at the Oceana Hotel. It would prove to be his final home.
He won a special Lifetime Achievement Academy Award in 1961 while he was living here. He died on February 23, 1965

Thanks for figuring the location of the Lytton Visual Arts Center, Beaudry. (and for the photo, Hoss) ... .but I'm still a bit confused by the eBay photograph.

The photographer appears to be standing in the middle of the entrance to the parking lot (right?). . sooooooooo what is the marquee gate for. . . an exit?

https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/8...923/kUAbqJ.jpg

And in this aerial the buildings are where the lot should be.

https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/1...924/gbBIcx.png

Annnnnnd. . .this #2 building . . .

https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/1...923/ECu4IR.jpg

. .is this #2 building, right?

https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/8...924/eznkHY.jpg

If so, it's blocking the view of Apt. bldg #1. . . .sooooo the parking lot in the eBay photo would have to be behind it in order to see Apt. building #1, right?

The answer is probably obvious and I'm going to be embarrassed. :runaway:

.

vexedbystuff Jul 17, 2024 9:08 PM

Since only 4 floors of the 6+ floor apartment building are visible in the eBay image is it possible that there was rooftop parking on "Building #2"?
Or was there maybe a parking ramp at that location back in the day? It sort of looks like the marquee *might* be located over the top of a ramp to me.

HossC Jul 17, 2024 9:53 PM

:previous:

From my original post, here is the lower level parking lot and gallery, so I think that vexedbystuff is correct that the marquee was at the top of a ramp. The strip mall was only built in the late-80s. The section labeled #2 by e_r is actually part of the bank - see GSV.

The aerial views don't really show anything, so you'll have to make do with this selection of pictures from Julius Shulman's "Job 3383: Museum of Motion Pictures and auditorium, 1962". This is the only exterior photo in the set - it looks like the Lytton Center was under the parking lot behind the bank.

There are a few clues if you look closely.

The name of the hotel might be at the top of the blade sign.

There appears to be an Italian restaurant specializing in Ravioli in the distance. ..wink

Hmm. .the name of the hotel might be longer than what's written at the top of the blade sign. (see below)
