What a great collection of vehicles in this, I assume to be, randomly shot photo! And the added bonus of someone actually crossing the bridge! (The eBay link dates the picture: May 25, 1959.) And, Mackerm, this colorful night photo you linked is great, too! Quote:

Here's another 1959 slide from the same eBay seller. The location of this one is fairly clear. We are looking west on the 101. In the distance (on the right) we can clearly see the waterfall of the Pioneer Memorial on N. Hill St. at the foot of old Fort Moore Hill. Los Angeles High School sits atop the hill above the memorial. https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/1...922/lErZuT.jpg eBay Thanks for your help on the other two slides, Makerm and Henry Huntington :) . . and for your comment, Martin Pal. (especially about the man crossing the bridge) . |

GSV Apparently the only remnants of the foreground rail bridge are this raised section of the cement wall, and the matching one on the opposite embankment. Was this Pacific Electric? The photographer was standing on the Alameda St. bridge, BTW. |

Here is a rare photograph far older than the recent color slides...I happened upon it this morning on eBay. "Antique 1889 Los Angeles Ca 30th St. School photo M.C. Bettinger principal" https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/1...924/BOoHIg.jpg Currently on eBay And here's the information taped on the back. https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/1...923/1C4DYU.jpg I'm not sure where -on 30th Street- the school was located. ..I tried looking through past posts but couldn't find any mention of it. . |

Has anyone heard of ROMEO TELEVOX? Last week when we were discussing the Garrett Corporation out at LAX I happened upon this oddity. "Los Angeles, Ca- Mrs. P.G. Garrett, Wife Of Westinghouse General Electric" https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/1...922/xm5cQQ.jpg https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/8...922/7uEPqx.jpg eBay I wonder if ROMEO could smoke cigarettes? . |

As rail customers began moving away from the wholesale area in the 1960s, the spur and its bridge served no further purpose and so were eventually removed. |

Los Angeles, CA- Mrs. P.G. Garrett, wife of Westinghouse General Engineer on the Pacific Coast, in a shocking love scene with Romeo Televox, the ideal lover. You should hear his line of static; Televox, the talking, mechanical Robot is on display at the convention of the Pacific Coast Electrical Association. The same photo appears in a book called 'The American Robot: A Cultural History' by Dustin A. Abnet. It can be downloaded from dokumen.pub. The caption there reads: Mr. “Herbert” Televox with the wife of a Westinghouse engineer fawning over it. Women’s interest in Mr. Televox was a particular theme emphasized by Westinghouse and commentators as a way to satirize fears of technological unemployment. The original caption dubbed the device “Romeo Televox, the ideal lover.” |

EDIT: and yes, that is exactly where the 30th Street school was - I checked out the 1910, 1914, and 1921 Baist maps and the 30th street school got progressively larger with each one. At the time, neither Hill nor Broadway extended to that area, so the school property extended partially over both of those current streets. But the oldest street-facing building was exactly midway between what is now Hill and Broadway, which is the right side of the school's existing 1923 building. The comparison below is with the 1910 Baist map. https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/pw...6cHQ=w926-h863 |

A mystery location for Tuesday afternoon. Here are a couple of fun snapshots that show a small group of well dressed ladies in from of a drinking establishment. (afternoon drinking club? :drunk:) https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/1...922/FWstrY.jpg eBay. .note that it says "shuffleboard" on the window. Oh wait, here's Doris. She's always late. https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/1...922/Hk4TtE.jpg eBay I found a Casey's Club but the street number isn't even close to the number on the building.
