While I was scoping out the area around the Russian Orthodox Church at 5433 Fountain Ave. I couldn't help but notice this mysterious area a block or so northwest of the church.

As you can see it is bordered by Fernwood Ave., St. Andrews Pl and De Longpre Ave. That's Western Ave. on the right - - - - - >

It's a co-working space like WeWork

Thanks UphillDonkey. I see now that it says Second Home Hollywood. When I first glanced at the aerial I thought it was a bunch of sandtraps.

I happened upon this interesting snapshot of Venice on eBay last week.

Why don't I remember seeing the Venice Watertower before - Is it possible my memory is getting worse?

It was interesting to read that the main building there was designed by the architect Paul Williams. The link below has the history of the building.

First post here, hope I'm doing this right.

Does anyone know anything about this building at Glendale Blvd. & Lakewood Ave. in Silver Lake?

Google Street View

https://i.imgur.com/fGQI5uI.jpeg

https://i.imgur.com/8RGLo7k.jpeg

It reminds me a bit of old florist buildings - wondering if there was originally a florist chain that built these funky little corner buildings?

ethereal_reality Oct 13, 2023 6:38 PM

Excellent job for a first post, beachboyz2men. (although the photographs are a tad bit large)

The way the building is situated on a corner perhaps it was originally a gas station. (before the streets were widened, of course)

https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/1...923/S23Mzh.jpg

But that's just a guess.
.

update:

It appears the building was a real estate office in the 1930s.

One more look at Meyer's utilitarian 'house'.

eBay / Boyle Heights 1893(?)

The Orphans' Home was at 917 S. Boyle. (There was one Moyer family in the CD, Frank and Caroline, in the grocery business at 825 S Grand, res 831 S Olive.)

In the 1898 CD Henry Meyer was prosperous enough to merit his name being in all-caps, "winery, ns. E 7th, bet. L.A. river and S. Boyle av., r. same."
Could the strange-looking house have something to do with wine production

To me the lack of windows imply a storage use. As an architect my first thought was that the second floor was an addition.
Probably wrong.

I think you could be on to something, Lorendoc and stanklem.

It was a shot in the dark but I thought the odd-looking Meyers house might be visible in this aerial view of the Orphans Home.

https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/1...924/wddAx8.jpg
LAPL / Date: 1924

And I learned something. The orphans home had its own VINEYARD!

Here's the description at LAPL

"The girl's orphange and school was established in 1856 by six Sisters of Charity nuns from Emmitsburg, Maryland, the motherhouse in the United States. They selected a house with vineyard and orchard belonging to B. D. Wilson for $8,000. This gave the orphanage an income from wine grapes and a supply of fresh fruits and vegetables. The 917 South Boyle Avenue site opened in 1890 on twelve acres and remained open until the it was condemned in 1953 and the orphanage moved to Rosemead.
Description
Aerial view of the Los Angeles Orphanage at 917 South Boyle Avenue, southwest corner of Boyle Avenue at Stephenson Avenue (now Whittier Boulevard) in Boyle Heights. The orphanage is a multistory, brick, L-shaped building with a tower at the entrance that is flanked by date palm trees. The driveway leads from the entrance through gardens to the highway. The twelve acres include not only the orphanage and school but plots for gardens and fruit trees."

I didn't realize it started out as an orphange for girls. I always thought it was a boys orphanage. so. .um. .when were boys added?

mystery darkroom. (1886) I love this photograph.

Here's another utilitarian structure from 1890s 1886 Los Angeles.

It's the darkroom of the photographer who took many of the photographs I recently posted - like this one.

Let's take a closer look.

Why, oh, why didn't someone (or the photographer himself) include a name and location. (other than Los Angeles)

I imagine the roof opens up to release the photochemical smells toxic gases .

I could be wrong, but it seems to me that it's more likely that the photographer was standing on top of something and shooting from 4th and Spring rather than "looking east at 4th and Spring." It appears to me that the street running left and right at the bottom of the view is ??? Los Angeles Street, and that we're seeing the tops of the towers of the Westminster Hotel at Main and 4th at bottom left of center.

That looks right to me. The big block of a building near center is the Los Angeles Ice & Cold Storage building at 4th and Central.

I grew up in the area.
I remember it as a real estate office up until the early '60's if I remember correctly.

The two different advertisements appear to be on the side of a water wagon.

We can read Shoes at 137 S. Spring St. and Buggies at 200 N. Los Angeles St. but not the name of the businesses. :(...(I imagine there are two more ads on the opposite side of the tank)

stanklem Oct 17, 2023 1:02 PM

Probably not happening. At least the high-rise, for now. The architect,David Adjaye, is persona non grata for his sexual daliances and being dropped by many clients. The lower rise building in the middle by Studio 111 may have already been permitted by the City.

New photo of the PIX.

Here's an amazing slide (dated 1962) of the PIX Theater in Hollywood...I'm almost certain it's new to NLA. ...The beautiful parts of the theater were subsequently (and inexplicably) COVERED IN TIN.

The reason I think it's new to NLA - - > The slide isn't included in the large number of photographs and newspaper articles at cinematreasures. (it probably will be now :)) . .included that is.

Here's a bit of interesting history that mentions a rooftop speakeasy during prohibition.

And from above. (note how large the 'back-of-the-house' area is / it almost looks like a mini-skyscraper)

The Pix was a fun theater. It was one of only a few on Hollywood Boulevard that had a full balcony. The entrance from the street to the lobby concession stand was long and inviting, and of course the carpeting throughout was the old style maroon with Art Deco swirls. The Pix, as was the World across Gower Street, was part of the Pacific Theatres chain. I saw many movies there over the years, including the original Ocean's 11. The Blob, starring Steven McQueen, played at the Pix for many weeks.

I used to walk down the Boulevard to the Lincoln Mercury showroom (just west of the Pix) to see the brand new 1961 Lincoln Continental Convertible sitting in the showroom window. Still love that car.
