Houstons skyline before the big glass buildings of the 80s and 90s sure was quite boring and grey. That photo must be 79 or 80 because it looks like 1100 Louisiana is under construction.

Virtually every building in the foreground (between City Hall and the bottom of the frame) stands today but you'd never know it from a recent image.

This picture illustrates an interesting point: "newer" cities such as Dubai, the Pudong district in Shanghai, many other Chinese cities, etc. either have new skyscrapers where there were previously empty spaces or large swaths that simply got razed. But Manhattan below Central Park has literally been filled with buildings for a couple centuries. New buildings must acquire the land and fill a demand for space. ESB is the obvious exception, and is actually an example of what is happening in many of the newer cities around the world... building a trophy for bragging rights in the hopes of attracting the demand before it actually is there.

Ugh....so sad. The beauty of the Normandie is truly unsurpassed. I would have loved to have seen her.

FYI - some of the panelling and furniture from the grande salon (the main first class Lounge) are in the Chicago Hilton & Tower - the Normandie Lounge.

Very well said. One is a (mainly, though arguably less and less) free market constitutional republic, the others are essentially different variations of command economies. Not knocking people from those other countries, the difference is just interesting.

Wasn't there a thread devoted to all of those Brazil shots from the Life archive?

In any event, I've typically thought of Brazil as a developing nation, while those old images of Sao Paulo convey the impression of prewar Los Angeles with its stately skyscrapers, palm trees and overall well-to-do appearance. I take it Brazil was more prosperous in the first half of the 20th century than it was during the second?
