Today was a very hazy day here in Vancouver, and probably one of the last warm and sunny days we'll have before the rainy season begins again, so I went out and took a bunch of pictures:

These bike lanes have got to be among the best in North America. New York apparently has some nice ones now, too. It's heartening to see how cities on this side of the pond are starting to "get it" about proper infrastructure for cyclists. Toronto still has a long way to go on this front.

There was a kerfuffle on these boards a while back about whether Vancouver's skyline was Manhattanesque. I don't think anyone can deny that this shot here really is reminiscent of Manhattan.

Definitely agree, that is a Manhattanesque view.

Vancouver looks great in most of those shots!

Awesome shot from the Bow and of Vancouver. I feel like some sort of VIP getting to see that sort of stuff before my friends, ha!

Chadillaccc Sep 14, 2013 5:30 PM

I'd just say that it is Vancouveresque, really. Vancouverism deserves as much credit as Manhattanism does. Vancouver's development has been incredible and has spawned a new form of development that cities all over the continent are trying to emulate. Ultra-livable-density.

Ps. Ouu I should grab some shots of our new separated bike lanes being installed downtown!

kool maudit Sep 14, 2013 7:04 PM

it's manhattanesque, but you can also tell that it would feel a lot different than manhattan at street level.

but these are the quibbles of a 12-year SSP participant.

September 14, 2013 - Duckworth Street East from Cavendish Square, St. John's, NL

This is two streets up from the harbour. Water Street (our main, downtown street) is just downhill to the left. And left of that is Harbour Drive.

The big buildings on the left are, from left, the Marriott Hotel, the Humphrey Gilbert Building, TD Place, and then in the distance are the Cabot Place Towers on New Gower Street.

The park between the Humphrey Gilbert Building and TD Place is the National War Memorial, which runs from Duckworth to Water Street. Directly opposite the Memorial across Water Street is Harbourside Park, so combined they're basically a small, two-block park. During the day, there's always crowds lounging on the grass. It's a nice atmosphere, one of those places you can find one just like and feel at home in just about city on earth (except Istanbul, now. :().
