A strange tradition no doubt, but surprised that's new in Montreal, been a pretty longstanding event in many cities across the globe.

I guess we can safely assume, therefore, that it started in an anglophone country.
It's been here for several years, at least, too. And, of course, merged with local shit like fairies, etc. |

Canada is one of the few Commonwealth countries for whom Remembrance Day is the primary day for honouring veterans and commemorating military service, so it's a much bigger event here than in, say, Australia, where Ayreonaut reports it passes almost unacknowledged. Part of this is because these places have separate days during which they do most of what Canadians associate with Remembrance Day. There, for example, it's Anzac Day in April. But they still have Armistice Day (what Remembrance Day is known as elsewhere) as well. Here we have both - our Memorial Day on July 1, which is the larger of the two, and Remembrance Day. Technically it's officially Armistice Day here, but on the street it's referenced and commemorated the same as everywhere else in Canada. So, a few pictures from across the country of Remembrance Day - and, in our case, both.
