The lot was completely empty during most of the year, and was used to sell Christmas trees during the holiday season. Here is a pic: https://i.imgur.com/KrzjDSg.jpg The grocery store has been gone for a LOOONG time (maybe the early 80s?), and they had their own parking lot, outlined in blue. The grocery store building is now a recording studio. Here's the location on Google Maps. |
I believe you, Scott Charles.
What surprised me about the Russian photo is that the ice machine was facing a public sidewalk & appears to have been situated on the street! Here's the photo once more (since the thread turned to a new page) https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/1...921/EJbqlS.jpg eBay . |
PS: Here is Food Kart in a photo from 1968. Looking east on Magnolia from Clybourn.

In the foreground of the photo you can see the Magnolia Theater, which appeared in the 1954 noir film (with Fred MacMurray), Pushover: https://i.imgur.com/TX4i05s.jpg Image source, and background on Pushover and the Magnolia Theater: http://dearoldhollywood.blogspot.com...locations.html |

The summer after high school I worked for Mc Donalds when they still had Multimixers. There are some stories there! |

Has anyone heard of the Harwood Industrial School? https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/1...923/T54Som.jpg LINK BELOW "Coming to the Harwood Industrial School from the mountains in a wagon. Los Angeles, California." This next photograph isn't nearly as intriguing as the people coming out of the mountain. But it confirms that there was, indeed, a Hardwood Industrial School. https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/1...921/RRH2uS.jpg LINK BELOW The two 'Harwood' photographs were found on a UMC 'miscellaneous' page along with sheet music & a photograph of the Men's Glee Club from Cornell College. Mt Vernon, Iowa. You can check it out HERE P.S. I checked all the past posts that have the word 'Harwood' in them (there were seven). None of the post were about the school. . |
Never mind the ice machine, where have the mobile/home delivery ham & bacon trucks gone? :dancingbacon

The Harwood Industrial School was not in Los Angeles. https://i.imgur.com/S9ihDZf.jpg Google Books - Forgotten Albuquerque The second graduating class picture is captioned as Albuquerque in another book. I guess the person who labelled those pictures was just mistaken. |

I wonder what some of those "true tales" might be that are in the third book pictured on that link: http://wesclark.com/burbank/all_3_books.jpg Oh...they forgot one... ;) .....https://books.google.com/books/conte...MIu2jqLLQXr_Ur |

...and here's one more.
Original 35mm slide, Los Angeles [1980s] https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/xq90/923/gkrmhN.jpg If you look closely, the two story brick building on the right appears to be an old dance hall. |

:previous: I should know (but don't) *sad* Can someone refresh my memory & tell me what building was on the right? (the one that's missing)
Even though the Harwood Industrial School ended up in Albuquerque, New Mexico (thanks NOIR NOIR)...here's another interesting photograph from the UMC Digital Archives. https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/1...922/G7nAnn.jpg UMC......for search purposes: Japanes restuarant on N. San Pedro St. City "Yachiyo" los Angeles Calif. Has anyone heard of Yachiyo? I take it that's the name of the restaurant (the restaurant appears to be the small shack-like building behind the larger building in the front. The building at the end of the block appears to be a hotel. (there's a small sign) . |

https://img-fotki.yandex.ru/get/2448...89c53_XXXL.jpg Looks like it says "CENTRAL HOTEL ROOMS 50c" Downtown sure had a lot of seedy hotels back in the day. |

Between the Magnolia and California theaters, we had the Pumpkin, Albin's drug store, Newberry's, the Barn (chuck Wagon dinners), the Blarney Stone, Sands Cleaner's, the Safeway and the Vega grocery stores, Ken Keats Television, A&W Root Beer stand and many more liquor stores, beauty shops and cafes. |
