Group plans to replace Expo Center with arena, stadium

Austin Sports & Entertainment, co-founded by former University of Texas swimming star Sean Foley and New England sports entrepreneur Andrew Nestor, partnered with Rodeo Austin, intends to work with the city of Austin and Travis County governments to replace the Travis County Expo Center with a 15,000-seat arena adjacent to a 40,000-seat open-air facility.

“We have private land and private money, and our goal is to build a world-class sports and entertainment hub in East Austin,” Nestor said.

The University of Houston opened 40,000-seat TDECU Stadium in 2014 for $128 million after it was originally budgeted at $105 million. The Austin facility could far exceed the cost of constructing TDECU Stadium. If the project breaks ground in 2018, it could be completed by 2021, Nestor said.

SOOO happy for the Bjarke Ingels stadium, his work generally all looks like the same stuff, got so dull and monotonous, Gehry-esque. But now this is new and AMAZING, perfect for Texas. Love it.

I hate to say it but as much as I want an MLS team to move here and as much as I like those stadium designs, I don't know if the location is right. An MLS team should be in an urban area. Austinites should be able to go to the games without having to drive so far.

Is there really nowhere in the city where they can build a stadium?

Landmark Properties Inc., a student housing developer based in Athens, Georgia, has filed a site plan with the city of Austin for its first major project at the University of Texas‚ a 17-story tower at 715 W. 23rd St.

The Standard at Austin could contain 287 units, a parking garage and amenity floor comprising more than 520,000 square feet on a little more than one acre. The project, as described at the Texas Department of Licensing and Registration, is valued at $191 million, which seems particularly pricey and may reflect a typo — something that has happened previously with TDLR records.

There is a lot still up in the air when it comes to whether the Columbus Crew professional soccer team will move from Ohio to Austin.

That includes a potential stadium deal that would support a Major League Soccer club. Though nothing has been finalized, a new rendering from Crew owner Precourt Sports Ventures presents an alluring picture of what a downtown arena might look like — including a dramatic view of the skyline.

Conceptual plans shared by PSV show a 20,000-seat facility on the west end of Butler Shores with the east side of the park preserved. The stadium would be about 69 feet tall, or slightly shorter than the nearby Zach Theatre and about 16 feet shorter than Barton Place Condos. It would be about as large as Mike A. Myers Stadium on the University of Texas campus, or Austin Independent School District's House Park on Lamar Boulevard near 13th Street.

^Nice! Thanks for posting that.

This other one of his shows how the new high rises in West Campus have impacted that neighborhood (west of UT).

This one also shows the capitol view corridor on the west side of downtown and the way the buildings are angled away from that corridor to protect the view of the Capitol.

From that picture angle it's conclusive the Frost tower is the most beautiful building in Austin. If it were just 100 ft taller it would be unparalleled and a signature tower design and just world class!

Is the Statesman site ready for redevelopment? I noticed it in the MLS stadium proposal and surely it was part of Amazon HQ2 bid. Also is it part of the South Shore redevelopment or separate?

Regarding tower cranes in the city. I came up with 18 just for downtown and West campus.. This doesn't include plaza Saltillo and east Austin.(at least 10 more). Or south(a few) or north to the Domain. Maybe someone local can figure the north Austin total. :)
Either way we have a ton of them currently.:):slob:

^ Wow!! Gorgeous pics! Hey I remember traveling on Amtrak's Texas Eagle a few yrs back and I recall a ton of crane activity right near the Amtrak station as we were coming into town..

A brochure was posted to the Lincoln Property Company's website which includes an updated building elevation showing 67 floors for the proposed tower at 608 Guadalupe. The height is still shown as 847 feet.

The website also includes some updated renderings with a few design changes. Besides gaining 5 floors and a few facade tweaks, it appears there's a "hole" at the top on the main roof with a balcony and what looks to be a public space on what is the 67th floor.
