Great photos as always Zoomer. Gotta love being able to drive around in a convertible in January!

Calgary is looking at double digits next week, including sunny and +17. You might be able to break out the convertible.

I wouldn't mind if it snowed in Victoria. I do snow removal when it does... not very often though.

Wow, great photos of Quebec City!!!

Some of the countless cranes dotting the Halifax skyline. Can anyone figure out 1) where I took this photo from? 2) what projects the six cranes are for? and 3) what landmark is under the white weather protection wrap?

A few more frost pics from Calgary. The frost is long gone now, as temps have been warm, even up into double digits. The memory of the frost will live on however

Thanks Metro-One - glad you enjoyed the pics.

A gorgeous little Toronto building which the developers allow a tiny bit of depth compared to the usual build right on top tower method. Looks too sterile though, would it kill them to remove a few of those tiles and put in a little garden out front with a single tree?

Also enjoying all the icy Calgary pics lately, the lighting/sky in a lot of these is magical, especially the dusk ones. Again a reminder for me to get out and take some evening pics - one day. I do that when I'm on holiday but not in Victoria for some reason.

An interesting thing about photos is that when I view the photos I know the context, the neighbourhood, how close it is to the ocean, etc. but to many viewers without the context this could be somewhere in the middle of the continent for all they know. I suppose why photosphere photos can be useful if not artistic, lol. Here's the view from the top of this hill taken last summer:

Nice photo explanation there Signal Hill - showing the building and the view! Having that view elevates it greatly for those who know or live in St. John's so knowing the context for me in helpful.

And speaking of context, drone shots are a great way to help provide that, if not the street context, and boom boom in Rimouski! Great building and views in one shot, well two to be exact. First off, is the snow/ice on the water or is that the shallow mud flats area? And damn I don't think I've seen a faster build before! I checked the Facebook link and they were only getting started in the summer! I'm a big fan of cascading floors, especially for wide buildings it's really important. Keep those updates coming Tone!

Rare for St. Catharines downtown to get a new building (aside from small infill projects), let alone highrise.

Carlisle Square - 18 storeys, 228? Apartments, 66.3m/218 feet
It's not going to win any design awards, but brings some much needed residential density to downtown St. Catharines, Ontario (est. pop 154k), the urban heart of Niagara Region.

What's the story with Edmonton City Centre mall? Will it undergo a massive transformation or tweaks around the edges/switch to more office, etc?

Nice set Klazu - there are some good public markets around the country but Granville is the best I've been to. I wonder if they'll proceed with the elevator plans from the bridge, which would affect the little ferry business a bit.

A few pics from January, the first bunch from the Vic West neighbourhood which is quite funky and interesting with a mix of industrial, heritage buildings and some mid-size projects along with bigger stuff in the works.

Great set, and that's a 1964 Comet. Maybe there is a trend of pairing vintage cars with vintage houses now?

zoomer Feb 2, 2026 12:39 AM

/\ There's a good number of houses around Victoria where you have some old folks who appear to have driven their same cars for decades. So not the wealthy folks who have pristine vintage vehicles but everyday folks who like their car and just keep driving it and when it dies they just leave it in the front yard.

For that house at 1746 Haultain those two cars appear parked either on the street or on the yard since the beginning of Google Street View in 2009. Here's a better view from 2011.

Some people like that worn paint look, but I think someone will restore it eventually. The house is about 30 years older than the car in this case. I see some being driven in Vancouver occasionally, but most classics are restored to pristine condition. BC seems to be the best province for longevity.

Another realtor drone update, :haha: William Street, in Georgestown, which was the city's first purpose-built suburb in the 1800s, today indistinguishable from the rest of the core. It and nearby Bannerman Park (including our former Parliament, the Colonial Building) are mostly former bog so the land was empty for most of our history.

https://i.postimg.cc/QdkMKtjW/1294244-2.jpg

The old roof on the right that's similar to The Rooms is, bizarrely, completely unrelated to it. That's St. Bonaventure's College, private Roman Catholic school (I think the oldest still functioning in the city?), and The Rooms is based on traditional, rural fishermen's sheds.

https://i.postimg.cc/L8BsgXmY/1294244-3.jpg

The hill hides most of downtown even in this area, where it's not all that steep. That beige building on the top right (former tobacco factory, now condos. I forget the name) is SO far from the water in reality.

Anyhow, top left, Barnes Road, that's where Georgestown begins. It's mostly out of frame above, and a bit to the left.

I have looked at it as an architectural manifestation of rural dominance in Atlantic Canadian politics. We have šxʷƛ̓ənəq Xwtl'e7énḵ Square here and St. John's has to have giant fishing shacks. It cannot have some sleek Scandinavian looking museum that would make rural voters uncomfortable or jealous. Maybe this is too jaded. :haha:

TorontoDrew Feb 4, 2026 2:52 AM

Great shots, when did the tradition of bright coloured homes start?

SignalHillHiker Feb 4, 2026 8:58 AM

The bright colours started in the 1970s as part of civic campaign, and have gotten brighter over time. It's also spread to modern subdivisions and rural communities.

There was always colour, of course, with wooden homes - but they were often dark (burgundy, forest green, etc.), common (white, seafoam), or even stretches of a half dozen or more homes all the same colour.

TorontoDrew Feb 4, 2026 5:15 PM

It only started in the 70's! What a great idea they had back then.

It cannot have some sleek Scandinavian looking museum that would make rural voters uncomfortable or jealous. Maybe this is too jaded. :haha:

It was considered very progressive (sort of postmodern), but I even think The Rooms does have some Scandinavian influence as well. It was designed by the brother of the artist who brought us the modern NL provincial flag. I don't like the unforgiving scale and brutal literalism of it, lacking in subtlety and the finer detail which would be more in keeping with the rest of the city. I think it also evokes some subtle religious connotation too, I mean it's kind of like the Holy Trinity made manifest, even churches don't do that. ;)

There was always colour, of course, with wooden homes - but they were often dark (burgundy, forest green, etc.), common (white, seafoam), or even stretches of a half dozen or more homes all the same colour.

This was partly because of air pollution too, there was lots of smoke and soot when homes were heated with coal, and industries did pretty much whatever they wanted; light colours could look very dirty. I'd still like to see some representation of those dark trad colours though.

Great photo!

Also nice shots of Quebec, although it appears they have a giant pink Peeping Pierre Problem..

Nice pics Rico - looking forward to going back to Montreal later this year. That one pic with the piping on the roof looks like a giant metallic tarantula about to consume a building.. Funny, tarantulas seem to have faded in the public imagination as something to be feared. Bigger worries in the world I guess, lol.

Ok, a few from last week in Victoria, I'll only repeat one from the few I posted in the weather thread.

great pics GS! I noticed being out and about today that everywhere is just exploding with flowers and blossoms. We'll definitely be hitting peak blossom in February this year as some trees are already losing them with leaves coming in.

It is a real estate photo but I thought this one was nevertheless interesting. A pretty standard neighbourhood of box-like rowhouses in the North End of Halifax, the kind of areas that don't get photographed much, but make up the heart of the city in some ways and a lot of the local experience.

There is a trend toward more muted colours, although closer in it's still more colourful. It used to be more common to see bright colours and the old scourge was light blue vinyl siding on low end homes. Now a lot of renovated ones are grey.

AI is getting better. The Basilica doesn't look like that, O'Donnell Hall is different. Confederation Building doesn't look that skinny even in a blurry background. But a lot of the foreground is pretty much spot on.
