Am I right to think that 3rd and Shoal, Austin Proper and the new Google building will be all about the same hight clustered together here?

More or less, yes,

Google Tower (500 West 2nd) - 400 feet - 28 floors
3rd & Shoal - 387 feet - 29 floors
Austin Proper - 381 feet - 32 floors

Really hope something gets built taller than the Austonian soon. Pretty cool though how Austin is now getting some semblance of skyscraper canyons.

We've got the Independent coming...it's something like 2 feet taller than the Austonian. :D

I like how the Westin turned out. Looks pretty classy actually and Westins usually look like junk. Last time I was in Austin that building was only about 4 stories completed. Time to go back.

From the other two sides it looks worse than junk.

I like the owl just peaking over the Colorado tower.

^ Ha, yeah it is kinda creepin' there, isn't it?

While driving past DT I noticed the Frost Tower had limited lighting. No Crown bright lites. Is this a timed thing after midnight...I've never seen that B4!

It's been that way for years. I think its a symbolic effort to "go green" by reducing electricity use.

They should just go LED. It seems pointless to shut one of the most iconic highrise crowns off so early. In most other cities I've seen buildings are lit up till at least 2 a.m. A few of the buildings DT turn their lights off then and most leave them on all night. I think 3rd @ Colorado stays lit till 2.

Sic'EmBears Sep 15, 2015 5:28 PM

Regarding the lighting, there was scaffolding around the Frost logo.

Perhaps the lighting is being converted to LEDs as we speak.

Financing confirmed for tower planned to be Austin’s tallest
10:41 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 15, 2015 | Filed in: Business

Los-Angeles-based CIM Group said today that it has joined The Independent — the planned residential tower slated to become Austin’s tallest building — as an investor and co-developer, setting the stage for construction work to begin in November on the project.

CIM, a real estate investment group with growing assets in the Austin market, will team with Aspen Heights and Constructive Ventures in developing the proposed 58-story tower at West Third Street and West Avenue.

The deal is anticipated to close in early November. Construction activity on the site will begin shortly thereafter, starting with the demolition of the former Austin Energy Control Center structure on the property, Lorenz said.

Yet another reason to add 10-20 floors (just dreaming)...lots of confidence in this one. :)

Well only if we're dreaming.

I like the Independent the way it is IMO. It's a brilliant successor to the Austonian in ATX's skyline.

If we're dreaming then I'd like the Independent to be built like it is now, same # of floors. But I'd like the developers to see the success they've gotten from this and build a second tower, bigger, taller, even more ambitious than the Independent for ATX. I'd rather get 2 towers, but then dreams over and you wake up. :(

Episcopal Church leaders are seeking a developer to partner with them on a mixed-use project on a prime downtown Austin block.

The New York-based Episcopal Church organization owns the site, known as Block 87, which it uses as a revenue-generating parking lot. As one of the last undeveloped city blocks downtown, church officials said it provides “a historic opportunity for development.” The block is bounded by East Seventh, East Eighth, Neches and Trinity streets.

By next year, church officials say, they hope to select a developer to team with on a project on the site, which has the potential for more than 600,000 square feet of development. Church officials envision a building with office, residential, and retail uses, along with a permanent home for the church’s archives.

Height on much of the block would be limited to 75 feet, to comply with rules aimed at preserving Capitol views. However, “there is great opportunity to include a substantial high-rise section for residences or office space in other areas of the block,” church officials said.

Downtown Austin’s booming real estate market has the owners of a 1980s condominium project wondering if the time has come to sell their prime property at the foot of Lady Bird Lake and Waller Creek.

The owners of the 58-unit Villas on Town Lake are being represented by real estate broker Robert Knight. Knight said he will begin soliciting offers from developers in October for the coveted 2-acre waterfront site at 80 Red River Street, just steps from Lady Bird Lake and the hike-and-bike trail.

The site is one of the last downtown parcels available for development on the north side of Lady Bird Lake between Interstate 35 and Lamar Boulevard, Knight said.
