By that logic Cleveland Ohio is also a euro vibe city.

For American tourists it seems to be the cobblestone or brick streets, stone buildings, French signs and spoken language. Trying to find the best coffee and croissant and acting like it's a mini Paris for North America or some nonsense. The Parisian Art Nouveau-style Metro Entrance doesn't help :haha:

I've even heard some American visitors describe Toronto as "feeling European". Which, it obviously isn't, but I can also see where they're coming from - compared to most of North America, the streetlife, trams, old masonry buildings, density, and lifestyle might feel more "Euro-esque" on the spectrum of places they're familiar with. Similarly, we sometimes see debates here as to whether Boston or San Francisco or wherever are the most European-like American city.

In other words, these tend to be casual observations and simple descriptors and aren't really something to get too worked up about one way or the other.

Thanks for the photos and thoughts, Zoomer.

The one thing that surprises me is you mentioning that you thought bakeries were expensive. I actually find bakeries in Montreal to be much cheaper than elsewhere in Canada, especially given the quality.

Just for example, there's a very highly regarded bakery near me called Automne. Their sourdough baguette is $3.30, their bâtard is $6 and their croissants are $2.40. An equivalent bakery in Toronto, Bisou, has the same things for $4.70, $9.95 and $4.25 respectively. I've found Vancouver to be similar to Toronto price wise. Croissants in particular are way cheaper here than anywhere else in North America (and usually much better too).

Of course I'm talking about French-style bakeries, but even if we're talking about other types of bakeries, I find prices here to be very reasonable. Maybe the one exception is Chinese bakeries which tend to be a little more expensive here than in Vancouver and Toronto, probably because there isn't as much competition.

Love that last one of St. John's. That's a beautiful streetscape: ornate, 3-storey buildings hugging the gentle uphill curve in the road, terminating at an imposing church. :boogy:

To be fair I only went to one bakery specific location, and looking at the website, yah, I think it's just insanely expensive for everything!

https://www.ducdelorraine.ca/

Lots of pastries and baked goods, but also a regular menu, so you could have this for breakfast: The 1952: 3 eggs of your choice, bacon, sausage, pancakes, roast potatoes all for just $52 tip not included.

I'm not a huge croissant fan to be honest, but I did have a egg/cheese/ham one with a mocha at Café Vasco da Gama.

I did have an excellent peach scone though at Olive et Gourmando.

Oh, a long standing side complaint I have about snooty coffee shops in any city, especially old school Italian ones that do not serve mochas out of principal. - Hey I'm sorry, if you can't figure out how to marry two exceptional beans together then you're lame and lazy, how's that for a hot take! I just googled why some don't and this came up as a reason:

"“Many good coffee shops use a great base product [espresso], only to overpower the beautiful delicate flavours of the coffee with a cheap chocolate syrup.” Saayman also claimed that stirring chocolate into the espresso also ‘completely ruins the crema’.

Ok, then don't use cheap chocolate syrup, duh. My favourite one in Victoria uses imported German chocolate chips they first melt in the cup, not syrup and it's crema is perfecto.

Ah yes, that explains it! Duc de Lorraine is popular with locals and definitely not a tourist trap, but it's also an institution that has been around for ages and I guess that makes them feel like they can add a huge markup to everything. I have gotten cake there for a couple of special occasions and it's a good 50% more expensive than any comparable pâtisserie.

I really dislike that take because why not say "It's just like Montreal" this is what Montreal is and has grown to be over more than 4 centuries on soil located in the Americas. It feels as if it's not giving credit or respect to the people, the city and the history for what it's become.

Somewhat related, it irritates me a little when people refer to the historic part of any North American city as "old world," or—and this is common—when realtors describe a historic house as having "old world charm."

This is a strange conflation of historic urban environments with some fairytale of Europeaness. (Usually these "old world" houses realtors are peddling are colonial or post-colonial North American architectural styles that you would never find examples of in Europe itself.)

/\ cool shot - and interesting that the statue is not on the dome itself but the roof of the legislature. Off the top off my head I can think of the Golden Boy on the Manitoba buildings, and Captain Vancouver on top of the BC legislature's dome. Anywhere else with a person/figure on top of the building? I know for BC there are a ton of carvings, statues of people and animals on the building, probably the same with elsewhere, potentially a good topic for a deep dive.

Yes, the architect was Francis Rattenbury who also design the BC Parliament buildings (construction started 1893 and completed in 1898) and the Empress Hotel (1904 to 1908). So all three of his buildings ring the inner harbour if you've ever been to Victoria you'll know how they frame the view.

Empress Hotel - Victoria. September 2, 2023. by JohnnyJayEh, on Flickr

He also designed the current Vancouver Art Gallery (originally courthouse) as well as the Chateau Lake Louise, but his original wing was destroyed by fire on July 3, 1924.

There's a ton more buildings, in particular in Victoria he was the architect for, I've started an album of my own pics which I'll gradually add to:

https://flic.kr/s/aHBqjBCbUs

He eventually was forced to leave Victoria because of a scandalous affair, he moved back to Bournemouth where his young wife then had her own affair with their 18 year old chauffeur.

Quote:

In the early hours of 23 March 1935, Rattenbury was discovered in his sitting room with severe head injuries. He had sustained a series of blows with a carpenter's mallet, the blows savage enough to remove the back of his skull and to cause his false teeth to fall out; he died four days later. His wife confessed, but Stoner admitted to the housekeeper that he had actually carried out the deed. Alma Rattenbury and Stoner were both charged although Alma was to retract her confession after her elder son Christopher visited her in prison. Stoner was convicted and sentenced to death, which was commuted to life imprisonment following the submission to the Home Secretary of a petition signed by over 300,000 people, who felt that the young man had been manipulated into committing murder by the older woman.

Alma, represented by Ewen Montagu, was acquitted of murder and of being an accessory after the fact but committed suicide a few days later on 4 June 1935,[4] stabbing herself with a dagger six times in the chest (three of which penetrated her heart), before throwing herself into the River Stour at Christchurch.[5][6]

Stoner served only seven years of his sentence since he was released early to join the army and fight in the Second World War. He married in 1944 and fathered a daughter in 1948. He and his wife led "a quiet life" in the Bournemouth area although he briefly attracted the attention of the media again when he was given two years' probation for indecently assaulting a 12-year-old boy in a public toilet in 1990
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Francis_Rattenbury

There is an excellent exhibit on Rattenbury and other Victoria architects at the Wentworth Villa in Victoria - apparently the only architectural musuem in Canada, lol: https://wentworthvilla.com/

And can you imagine if this was built in Prince Rupert!!

https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikiped...nce_Rupert.jpg

Quote:

The Château Prince Rupert was an unexecuted hotel to be built in Prince Rupert, British Columbia. The hotel was planned by the Grand Trunk Pacific Railway and was designed by Francis Rattenbury. The architect's first sketches were made in September 1911, and he completed the final plans in June 1913. Work on the foundations began in late 1913, but halted shortly thereafter and never resumed.

The hotel project was part of the Grand Trunk Pacific's plan to make Prince Rupert a west coast port city to rival Vancouver, Seattle, Portland, and San Francisco. If built, the structure would have been the focal point of the town and one of the largest hotels in the country. However, the railway's financial problems, combined with the onset of World War I, prevented its realisation. By 1923 the GTP had been absorbed into the new Canadian National Railway, which chose Vancouver as its western terminus.

Maybe if it was carved into hills like Pittsburgh or something... could you imagine? What a beautiful city it would have been, with the topography, oceanfront (far more exposed than any other west coast city in Canada)... but would it even have been possible?

It's a very interesting thought.

Prince Rupert at 300,000 to 400,000 people could really have changed the character of coastal northern BC.

I have never been there either, but it is fascinating to think of the possibilities. Would a second major coastal city have provided the impetus to build a coastal highway between Vancouver and the Skeena River region. I know how mountainous the topography is, and how deeply indented the coastline is, but, it would have been one of the most scenic roads in the world, and, would have allowed for the development of other smaller communities all along the BC coast.

It's a pretty plausible "what if" for Prince Rupert to be the largest west coast city in Canada. The US claimed all of the land up to Alaska. Maybe Canada could have ended up with a tiny portion of coastal access.

It could be developed into a major city. It would need a system of bridges connecting across the waterways, and the buildings would be built along the flatter areas near the water. It would be a bit like Hong Kong.

Unfortunately, Rupert has a very bad climate with little sunshine, tons of rain, and no real summer.

What a gorgeous setting for a city, but it's a shame most of the new development in the first photo is so... fugly.

Also, these photos really remind me of how so much of the urban form in Quebec — outside Montreal and central Quebec City — is similar to the Maritimes and New England.

Metro-One Oct 17, 2025 11:08 PM

Technically there is a second major city in the west coast (if near half a million counts) it’s called Victoria!

As for Prince Rupert, it has all the negatives of a coastal marine climate with nearly none of the benefits (perhaps a year round ice free harbour being the only one).

If we are going to break down west coast NA climates and biogeography into two realms, California and Alaska, Vancouver and especially Victoria are the northernmost extent where the “California” realm still dominates. At around 55% California to 45 Alaska%. For reference Portland would be 70% California, San Fran 85% California, and LA 100% California. Bella Coola on the mid coast would be 25% California and 75% Alaska. Prince Rupert is 99% Alaska.

The only other location in northern BC where I could see a larger urban centre with ocean access making sense would be the Kitimat to Terrace stretch. It actually has a decent amount of flat low land to build upon and they still get a summer.

Now, the largest untapped BC location for a major city with a good climate is the east coast of Vancouver Island from Nanaimo to Campbell River.

1906 Leighton Road, Victoria - October 15, 2025 by ...

Great set of photos. The top one must have been posed for?

Was the house being moved, or just raised? It seems they do this sort of house raising a lot in BC. This house, which I noticed the other night, was similar before it was stripped down. I think this technique might be much more common in BC than anywhere else in Canada.

Sorry, not a great photo, but it was dark. ;)

Yah, it's very common here in Victoria - an 'easy' way to redevelop your property. I believe this one is for an addition.

90% of the time it's to add another level and for the rest they're moving the house elsewhere. Several years back they moved an entire small apartment block from Cook Street Village, put it on a barge and it was shipped to Washington state.

Here's another one from a a few years back, an old house that they stripped and turned it into four separate units for sale, just completed this year.

1915 Fernwood Road - December 6, 2022 by JohnnyJayEh, on Flickr

I see that a 597 square foot unit sold for $520,000 and still for sale is a 715 square foot unit for $542,500; the 1136 square foot unit for $855,000 and the 895 square foot unit sold for an unknown price, but guessing in the 700s.

They call it a character conversion, but there's no character inside and the outside is all new, just the old bones retained I guess. A bit of a disappoint I'd say.

Tone, that Rimouski project is breaking land speed records! I wonder if they'll be able to keep up the pace when it comes to the interiors. And holy moly, I didn't realize the tide went out that far! Is it a walkable beach or kind of mucky?

ScreamingViking Nov 4, 2025 4:09 AM

Great timing and symmetry on this one! If only the bird hadn't tilted its head slightly.

Well, ScreamingViking this generous seagull gave me a second chance to take a slightly more focused picture. He even posed patiently for me. They call him SuperCat.

Rimouski Bay, where downtown is located, is very shallow and muddy like the picture suggests. Together with the seawall, it acts as a natural damper that helps protecting DT.

Not to worry though, the city's territory stretches for more than 20 kms of littoral, so there's other areas with nicer beaches, coastal trails and parks.

Looking onto the "skyline" of Repentigny, an edge-city of about 100,000. The two 30-ish storey high-rises visible here caused such a stir in the community that the city has now banned high-rise construction for the foreseeable future.

Approaching the former city of Lacheniae, now part of the larger city of Terrebonne (pop 120,000), Montreal's third largest suburb by pop. and its newest edge-city skyline. Like 5 years ago there was just like a fucking field here.

Rico, I was getting the theme song for the Sopranos playing in my head as I enjoyed your Montreal highway exhibit.

zoomer Nov 11, 2025 6:57 PM

Yes, really like the highway road trip theme from Rico - very cinematic. You need to put a YouTube song at the beginning like Signal Hill Hiker does for some of his photo sets, maybe I Drove All Night, or Life is a Highway, haha. Highway to Hell? Depends where you were headed I guess.

Also some more Toronto beauties, those Remembrance snow pics are poignant.
