Am I correct in recalling that the reason the building got reclad in the first place was because of the 1994 earthquake? |

Here's today's Julius Shulman post. It's "Job 1490: Pereira & Luckman, Western Geophysical Co. of America, 1953". I'm intrigued by "Research Laboratories & Shops" above the door.
http://i809.photobucket.com/albums/z...1.jpg~original The other shot shows the whole front of the building. http://i809.photobucket.com/albums/z...2.jpg~original Both from Getty Research Institute The 1956 CD lists the Western Geophysical Co lab & shops at 923 N La Brea Avenue. The March 2014 image (below) shows the building intact and in the hands of Mole-Richardson, a stage lighting company founded in 1927. http://i809.photobucket.com/albums/z...3.jpg~original GSV Like the Citibank building at Wilshire and La Cienega from a few days ago, we've only just lost this well-preserved building. The GSV image from later in 2014 shows the building being demolished. It looks like the replacement was completed very recently. http://i809.photobucket.com/albums/z...4.jpg~original GSV Mole-Richardson also occupied the old ModernCraft Laundry building across the street. The tragic demise of that building was covered here in 2014 - Beaudry's post #22011 was the first one I found. The developers were quick to knock down the Morgan, Walls & Clements structure, but the site is still empty. Here's a 2011 reminder of what was lost. http://i809.photobucket.com/albums/z...5.jpg~original GSV |
More Rust

We've encountered H. N. Rust's son, E. H. Rust, before. He had a palm nursery at 11th and Flower: Quote:
He is also likely the Rust who supplied trees and shrubs for the Giroux Estate in Hollywood: Quote:

I remember that post Flyingwedge. It was terrific. Roehrigs certainly get no respect. They're often torn down without a thought ........................................................................................................ Quote:
"Erased de Kooning Drawing, Robert Rauschenberg, 1953" https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/mH...g=w430-h498-no https://www.sfmoma.org/artwork/98.298 "Some considered the destruction of a de Kooning drawing to be an act of vandalism; others recognized the concept of Rauschenberg's new work." - wiki Maybe we just don't get it? Of course the difference between Rauschenberg and the developers is that Rauschenberg only did it once. There aren't museums full of destroyed artwork for us to admire and ponder over. |
:previous: BRR, there's enough in that ONE post for 4 or 5 posts.
I feel many of the fine photographs you posted deserve discussion, but will be overlooked because it's all so overwhelming. Just my opinion. |

I think I'll gas up the google-mobile and try to find at least one bush. (and it doesn't have to be Gold of Ophir ;)) |
Let me return briefly to 'Bay District Motorcycles'.
http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/102...924/FeRm3B.jpg http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_aWWlul47h6...black+prince+3 Take a look at this very cool lighter/keychain. (Jack Baldwin owned Bay District Motorcycles) http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/800...922/OGnYbW.jpg http://www.antiquesnavigator.com/d-2...in-50s-la.html It sold for $31 Although...the address on the lighter is slightly different. 2705 on the lighter...2703 on the decal below. http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/800...923/God5i3.jpg http://socalvoc.com/wp-content/uploa...yDistrict.jpeg |

The SW corner is where the Pavilions is now (the map's turned around). I couldn't find a thing I could connect with HN Rust, but good luck :-) |
:previous: Thanks t2
Here's an impressive photograph I found a few days ago on etsy. (I believe we've seen a similar view on NLA, but not this particular photo) "1950s Long Beach California" http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/102...924/WpOeKW.jpg https://www.etsy.com/listing/5135744...=sr_gallery_31 It looks like it was taken after a rain. I spy a sailor on the corner. (is that you CBD?) And what's that above the Parking entrance on the right? the only thing that comes to mind is two chevrons. _ |

Remember the slides of the 'Little Country Church' from earlier this week?
The seller on ebay also offered these slides. http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/128...924/aOuP73.jpg 'Silk Stockings' is showing at the Pantages :previous: Park LaBrea in the 1950s. http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/128...923/oKOL0i.jpg :previous: Look! Gold of Ophir roses! The last two slides show two modernist homes. http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/128...922/0F4YDc.jpg It appears the garage was a later addition. (it doesn't have the same aesthetic as the home) http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/128...922/V5oirz.jpg Does anyone recognize these homes? Hoss might have already taken us on a tour of them via his Julius Shulman photographs. ___________ I'm kidding about the Gold of Ophir roses. ;) _ |
