Gretna Green is one of the world's most popular wedding destinations, due to its romantic wedding traditions dating back over centuries, which originated from cross-border elopements stemming from differences between Scottish marriage laws and those in neighbouring countries.I guess that's why Yuma borrowed the name. Here's the Old Blacksmith's Shop, built around 1712. http://i809.photobucket.com/albums/z...1.jpg~original wikipedia.org |

...but I feel compelled to add this bit from the Gretna Green wiki: "Scottish law allowed for "irregular marriages", meaning that if a declaration was made before two witnesses, almost anybody had the authority to conduct the marriage ceremony." For some reason blacksmiths often took this on. "Blacksmith priests" and their anvil/altars became associated with Gretna Green weddings. |
You have a very good memory, Blaster. From the 1960 Santa Monica city directory: http://i.imgur.com/h6URW4v.jpg ancestry.com This address is shown on both views I posted at http://skyscraperpage.com/forum/show...ostcount=38598. The "Wind and Sea" was in the beveled building at the NE corner of Ocean and Broadway, and is currently the Ma'kai Restaurant and Lounge: "Chosen as Santa Monica's best cocktail lounge for 2009 and 2010." As the Russians say, the apple does not fall far from the tree. This is a Dick Whittington Studio picture a little later than the parade picture that *almost* gives us a view of the bar...if he had only gone 1 block south... http://i.imgur.com/GX1JGiv.jpg USC Digital Library The county assessor gives the build date of 101 Broadway as 1913/1955. The Wind & Sea existed at least through 1988, noirish flavor intact: Is There No Going Back For Houston? |
Lorendoc, much thanks for the info on the Wind and Sea. I thought it was long gone before 1988.

5353 W 3rd St was designed by A. S. Heineman in 1922. He was known for large Pasadena homes and as the builder and developer of the first motel (The Milestone Mo-Tel,1925, in San Luis Obispo). The school was built for the Cumnock School and then, as you say, it was taken over by Art Center after the war. When Art Center left in the 70s, Whittier College School of Law came in and stayed the better part of 20 years. I remember it best as that. They had a very distinctive sign. It is now, as GW said in his post (linked above), the Yavneh Hebrew Academy. The building appears to be changed hardly at all from the day it was built; unusual for LA. https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/6Z...t-4=w1366-h768 gsv |

I graduated from the old ACC campus location in 1972. John Lear, designer of the Leer business jet, spoke at my graduation ceremony. Shown below is the view of the new campus building as you drive under it on the access road. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v4...psgjqxnutd.jpg CDfile |
Thank you Debbie
Debbie Reynolds was just a teen when she made "Singing in the Rain" (1952), still living at home. She took the bus to work everyday. |

Thanks for pointing out the Amor Arms roof-top sign. Sadly, it's all but invisible now. As you probably noticed, the sign is angled toward the back of the massive Dolby Theater. http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/102...923/jxyLAj.jpg google-earth & that hideous monstrosity of a 'entertainment complex' chopped off Orchard from Hollywood Blvd. :( Well guess what, I found a 1970s snapshot of Orchid Avenue when it was open at Hollywood Boulevard. http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/102...921/oS3wvV.jpg ebay The Amor Arms sign can be seen half-way down the tall palm tree on the right. __ But wait there's more! Aspiring 'actress' Claudia Monroe (I kid you not) posing on......yep, Orchard Avenue. http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/102...922/iNueAO.jpghttp://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/102...921/33OXj9.jpg ebay and once again, there's the Amor Arms sign up the street. Here she is contemplating her future stardom. http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/102...921/FnOjuK.jpg ebay time for some souvenir shopping. http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/102...922/CFhgFI.jpg ebay coffee break and a cig.....and wondering if she put enough money in the meter. http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/800...921/eJH6N9.jpg ebay Does anyone recognize this coffee shop? The vintage photo was taken in front of the church steps on Van Ness. Tovanger 2 has the correct view [previous reply]. |
unihikid, I really enjoyed seeing your post with the Phil Specter Christmas album and really interesting that you dad is on the cover! I've still got an original copy of that LP in my collection.
And tovangar2, thanks for your great post on Village Recorder. That place really has an amazing legacy, and your photos were great. Happy Holidays, everyone. |
I live about seven blocks away and took my morning run past St. Brendan's - it checks out. Congrats to WS1911 who made an amazing deduction from so few clues.

I guess I was in denial that the fine looking arts and craft house on the southwest corner of 3rd & Van Ness was gone. :( http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/800...924/O8tyRU.jpg detail But I took some solace that this beautiful next door neighbor has survived (along with several others) http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/128...923/GmSKhl.jpg gsv I believe that's a 'trumpet' bush, right?- odinthor Thanks for initially figuring out the location WS1911. A little info no the house: ore and oil man Isaac Boicourt built it ca 1912; he was still living there with his wife Ida and old-maid daughter Edna when he died in 1941. Ida died in the house in 1948. Apparently not so adept at cramming her late-model Buick into a 1912 garage, Edna was issued a building permit on December 22, 1969, to repair "motor vehicle damage" made to the outbuilding. (Edna, who'd been a music teacher, died at 95 in 1981.) Edna seems to have sold the property to the developers of the Hancock Gardens Apartments, who in Feb 1974 were issued a permit to demo the house. |
:previous: Hey, thanks GW! -your information makes the house all the more interesting.

Parking Price Wars
The difference of 5 cents created a bitter price slashing war between two parking lots in Hollywood today. The operator of the lot in foreground said, "I cut my all-day fee from 25 cents to 20. I went down to a nickel (arrow, left) when price slashing started in earnest." The other operator said, "...then he droppedagain and I did the same, finally to 10 cents (arrow, at right). Sure it's silly." Photo dated: May 10, 1949. -Herald Examiner http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/128...922/26APi1.jpg https://www.flickr.com/photos/ozfan22/ Even though we know this is Hollywood (that's the Warner Theater with the tower on the right), and we know it's somewhere along Hudson street (there's a sign), I can't get my coordinates. I'm mostly curious about this building. http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/800...924/RIUxKd.png detail :previous: I hadn't noticed that person in the backyard. __ |
