Yuletide
For those of you who are devotees of the Julian calendar, I hope you have as merry a Christmas as my Winter Solstice turned out to be. Happy Yuletide ("wheel turn").

I generally follow the Xiuhpohualli calendar ...fixed (365 days) Pre-Columbian (Aztec) ...its very reliable and never lets you down. Cheers everyone in the New Year....whatever year you follow. |
Merry Christmas to everyone on NLA.

In the early 1960s the Maharishi Mahesh Yogi used the building as his Los Angeles centre for Transcendental Meditation. http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/640...923/coWQH7.jpg https://www.beatlesbible.com/people/...i-mahesh-yogi/ — several sources say the Beatles meditated in the large auditorium on the first floor. More prosaically, the building was briefly used as a processing laboratory for color film. As T2 mentioned earlier today, in 1968 it became 'The Village' Recording Studio. 'The Village' was founded by Geordie Hormel, grandson of the founder of Hormel, the meat-packing company. http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/640...922/qsofYE.jpg pinterest/findadeath Geordie's first wife was actress/dancer Leslie Caron http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/128...924/H7A5AY.jpg https://www.pinterest.com/pin/20829216997237146/ What a striking couple! http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/102...921/Um9m5b.jpg http://villagestudios.com/geordie-ho...recorder-1968/ below: In Hollywood, circa 1953 http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/128...923/xPNoBV.jpg http://www.gettyimages.in/detail/new...re-id592638145 the only unibrow at the premier Geordie eventually married four times, and owned 'The Village' until his death in 2006. __________________________-- Back to the building: The former Masonic building looks impressive on 'The Village' website.(despite that awful cornice) http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/102...923/LLz0gF.jpg http://villagestudios.com/ But here's the real surprise.....take a look at the old Masonic meeting room. Now it's known as the Moroccan Ballroom at 'The Village'. http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/102...924/HEOCnI.jpghttp://villagestudios.com/moroccan-ballroom/ http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/102...923/fsARHI.jpg http://villagestudios.com/moroccan-ballroom/ Stunning isn't it! one last look. http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/102...924/fFcOyX.jpg And finally, here's the auditorium (where the Beatles supposedly meditated back in the 60s) http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/800...922/JZwBFR.jpg http://villagestudios.com/studios/auditorium/ The ceiling has been soundproofed but the lighting fixtures look original. Here's the same view under a different lighting situation. (or aperture setting) http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/800...923/qzy1Ga.jpg http://villagestudios.com/studios/auditorium/ & take a look at this lighting fixture! -wow http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/800...924/2lYzQ8.jpg http://villagestudios.com/studios/auditorium/ _______ If any one of you would like to make me really happy, find a photograph of the Maharishi Mahesh Yogi and/or the Beatles at this building. I searched off and on all afternoon and found nothing. info about the Beatles and film processing lab etc here: http://www.soundonsound.com/music-bu...rs-los-angeles :previous: Also mentions "numerous secret doors and passages" sidenote: I don't see how these beautiful interiors could have survived if the building had been used as a film processing lab. __ |

Happy holidays
Wrong holiday, but here is a picture that only could have been taken in Los Angeles. Abe Lincoln leads a troop of WW I actor-veterans marching north on Spring past what I think is the State Building on Labor Day, 1937. Except for the sashes and doughboy helmets, they look like shop clerks.
The Times building looms patriotically in the distance. http://i.imgur.com/fPZnMnr.jpg UCLA Special Collections |
