Matty Matheson is opening a 95,000-square-foot restaurant in Hamilton
The Iron Cow Public House will be housed in the city’s new arena Matty Matheson, the Toronto chef, restaurateur, cookbook author, producer, actor and musician, has always been a little bit rock and roll, and he’s about to embark on a new, literally arena-sized project. Matheson—who plays in Pig Pen, a hardcore band named after a founding member of the Grateful Dead—is staking his claim on the new Hamilton Arena, once Copps Coliseum, a concert hall that was graced four times by the legendary jam band. No, the culinary rockstar won’t be performing on the main stage when it opens in late 2025. Instead, in conjunction with venue and hospitality development company Oak View, which is leading the renovation of the ’80s auditorium—a massive undertaking that promises to result in a world-class venue for concerts, sporting events and live entertainment—he will be opening a new restaurant in the arena. The Iron Cow Public House will be of cattle-farm proportions: 9,500 square feet, room for 185 hungry people, a speakeasy-style bar and, most likely, a whole lot of meat. But that’s not all. Matheson’s restaurant group, Our House Hospitality Company, is also overhauling the arena’s concession stands that will now feature dishes from Matty’s Patty’s, his smash burger spot, and Rizzo’s House of Parm, his red sauce restaurant in Fort Erie. https://torontolife.com/food/matty-m...amilton-arena/ |

95,000 sqft for 185 people... despite people generally getting larger over time, this still isn't West Virginia! ;) |
Apparently the arena has been so successful at booking big events that it isn't going to bother pursuing the Brier (curling), which would have a long setup time and require the arena for 19 days:

It looks like the scoreboard might be upgraded after all.... https://hamiltoncitymagazine.ca/matt...amilton-arena/
"When asked directly whether the arena would be a sporting venue, Feldman said Hamilton is a big and passionate sports town and that the ice plant and scoreboard will be upgraded. He said more news on that front will come." |
No doubt the upgrade to the scoreboard is likely part to of the naming rights deal.

I went for a tour a couple weeks back. while it is very interesting, it seems to be lacking the appeal to the everyday folk.
more emphasis on high end dining, more areas for meals, roped off drinking areas like the "Loge" or "event level" that you need to be a member for... I think it will be a cool venue for concerts. I think the "best seats in the house", being those lower boxes will be lackluster for any type of sporting event... i also think we have lost the ability for a "cheap" night out being a junior game or what have you and a couple beers. from what described to me, this is meant to be an occasion, not a night out. I give the iron cow 2 years before it gets sold to a franchise who runs it int the ground a la honest lawyer style. |
Any guesses on where it will relocate? I'm going to say somewhere in the Wellington-Barton area -- lots of empty lots up that way, despite any future General Hospital campus plans. And probably fewer NIMBY voices to argue against it.
Cannon-Ferguson was my initial guess, but with new development slated around there the facility could face another move in the shorter-term future. Salvation Army, development group explore relocation of York Boulevard shelter The consortium that struck a deal with the city on downtown venues is working with a social-service organization. https://bloximages.chicago2.vip.town...ize=1200%2C801 https://www.thespec.com/news/hamilto...040899746.html Teviah Moro The Hamilton Spectator June 24, 2025 The Salvation Army and a development consortium say they’re exploring plans to relocate the social-service agency’s longtime downtown men’s shelter. The potential move of the Booth Centre, Hamilton’s largest shelter, comes amid a $280-million overhaul of Hamilton Arena (formerly FirstOntario Centre) on York Boulevard as part of a revamped entertainment precinct in the core. Higher-density housing, along with new eateries and shops, are part of the vision for the area around the arena, which is across the street from the men’s shelter. “The Salvation Army remains a dedicated and innovative presence in the City of Hamilton, continually seeking new ways to provide hope and support to the most vulnerable members of our community,” Glenn van Gulik, divisional secretary for public relations, told The Spectator via email. As such, van Gulik said, the shelter operator is “working collaboratively” with the Hamilton Urban Precinct Entertainment Group (HUPEG) “with support” from the municipality “to explore the relocation” of the Booth Centre and community and family services buildings in the city. ... The Salvation Army’s prospective exit from York Boulevard follows moves by other social-service organizations from the core, Coun. Cameron Kroetsch noted. And the “mystery question” is where the Salvation Army might go, the downtown councillor said. “I’m just mindful of the fact that there are groups and individuals who need these services and there’s not a lot of space downtown.” There should be a co-ordinated plan to ensure continuity of services for people in the area, Kroetsch suggested. “Because they’re not going to suddenly vanish.” |
Probably where all the shelters seems to be moving....somewhere in ward 3.

I hope that when the Salvation Army relocates, it's part of a mixed-use project.
I think the intersection of Barton and Wellington (the former Kenesky's spot) would be a good location. However, I believe the Joyce family owns the site. It would be special if the city worked with Joyce to build a new medical centre, a spot for the Salvation Army, and add some affordable mixed-income units. That would be the chef's kisses to me. |
New name is TD Coliseum per their social media pages this morning

Wouldn't have guessed TD would be interested in jumping on that one. Interesting.

Glad they kept Coliseum

Hamilton Arena Project | ? | 4 fl | Under Construction -> TD Coliseum | ? | 4 fl | Under Construction

I guess we can thank TD for getting the shelter out of here. No way they would agree to brand this with drug addicts shooting up across the street.
|
I like that "Coliseum" is back - although it wouldn't bother me if they stuck with Centre or used Place or Arena anyways.... just wasn't a fan of "First Ontario Centre"... didn't roll off the tongue for some reason.

(TD Place already exists too, but for how long will they retain naming rights in Ottawa?) I do wonder if FO will pivot to naming rights for the Hamilton Stadium. They're already a partner with HSG. Though that may be a bit more expensive than they'd want... unless they lose the concert hall whenever it gets renovated by HUPEG. Quote:
The Spec article has some photos of a very clean looking but much-work-to-be-done interior: https://bloximages.chicago2.vip.town...ize=1200%2C859 https://bloximages.chicago2.vip.town...size=750%2C523 |
Looks like we're getting an AHL team.
OVG says pro hockey will be returning to Hamilton https://www.thespec.com/sports/hamil...c2889d4d2.html Based on Pistore’s timeline, we should be finding out which is our new team sometime in September or early October. |
They also announced that the Toronto Rock are returning this winter, although I don't think there was much doubt about that. Although maybe a team name change to go with the arena change, get a totally fresh start as a Hamilton team would have been nice.
|
Too bad they didn't do more drastic changes to the exterior. Looks like some paint and signage

https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/hamil...lton-1.7572983 "Despite the return to Hamilton, the team's name will remain the same, the team's director of communications Mike Hancock said Friday." The first version of a lacrosse team that played here was called the Ontario Raiders, specifically to instill a "regional" feeling about them. I believe they became the Toronto Rock after moving to the Big Smoke. |

Or Escarpment Rock (I originally typed Niagara, but Hamilton is definitely not that region... maybe the gateway, but that's it) |

There's only so much they can do with a 40-year-old building on the budget they have. |
Looks like Oak View Group is shopping for a new CEO.
Former MLSE boss Tim Leiwecke indicted for allegedly rigging US arena bidding process (Toronto Star, July 9, 2025) From 2018 to 2024, Leiweke allegedly led a scheme to steer the entertainment contracts for the arena to his company, according to the U.S. Department of Justice. His spokesperson denies any wrongdoing on the part of Leiweke. Oak View Group CEO Leiweke leaves post after bid rigging charge on UT arena project (MSNBC, Eamon Javers & Dan Mangan, July 9, 2025) Oak View Group CEO Tim Leiweke was indicted on a federal criminal conspiracy charge related to allegedly rigging a bid to develop, manage, and operate the University of Texas’ basketball and entertainment arena in Austin, the Department of Justice said Wednesday. Oak View Group, which will pay $15 million in penalties in connection with the allegations, later Wednesday said that Leiweke “will transition from the position of CEO to” vice chairman of the entertainment venue giant’s board of directors, and remain a shareholder. Leiweke, 68, is accused in the indictment of conspiring with another would-be bidder on UT’s $338 million Moody Center arena project to induce that second company in February 2018 to drop out of the competition with Oak View Group in exchange for receiving lucrative subcontracts at the 15,000-seat arena. CNBC has been told the second company was Legends Hospitality, a New York-based venue services company that is majority-owned by Sixth Street Partners, and whose minority owners include the New York Yankees and the Dallas Cowboys. |
Paul McCartney to open TD Coliseum with Hamilton show this fall
https://www.ctvnews.ca/toronto/local...how-this-fall/ Sir Paul McCartney is set to be the first act to play the newly renovated TD Coliseum when it reopens in Hamilton this fall. McCartney will be coming to Hamilton on Nov. 21 as part of his Got Back Tour, which includes 18 other stops, the venue announced Thursday. Hamilton is the only other Canadian city included on the tour aside from Montreal, where McCartney will play two shows. In a news release, TD Coliseum General Manager Nick DeLuco said the performance will mark a “bold new chapter” for the 18,000-seat sports and entertainment venue and speaks to the calibre of acts they’re planning to host. “Opening night deserves something extraordinary, and it doesn’t get any better than Paul McCartney,” DeLuco said in a statement. The venue said McCartney will deliver a “high-energy, career-spanning set filled with iconic hits and inspiring music.” |

Lots of talk a year ago about Hamilton getting a hockey team of some level and it looks like it will be happening, although not the Marlies like a lot of people seemed to be convinced of. The AHL Bridgeport Islanders are apparently moving to Hamilton for next season. The team is owned by the NHL club so it would be staying as an Islanders affiliate. Hasn't been confirmed or announced by the team or league yet but it's being widely reported now.
