We've seen numerous images of Robert Kennedy's visit(s) to Lo Angeles. This one is new to NLA.
June 4, 1968 http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/128...923/xmdeJ2.jpg eBay The seller didn't say where in Los Angeles this was taken, but I'm pretty sure that cross you see behind the crowd is (was?) on Olvera Street. If the date is correct, this was taken the day before Robert Kennedy was assassinated. Does anyone know....did Mr. Kennedy speak at Olvera Street, or are the people just waiting to see him drive by? __ |

s.e corner Olympic and Fairfax, 1948 Poking out over the roof of the gas station is a building with what looks like a spire, and signage starting "GO.."....any ideas on what that is? http://i1381.photobucket.com/albums/...psc4axipdi.jpg A 1936 aerial shows the gas station. To the south on Fairfax is a Vons Market with a tri-cornered rooftop sign. http://i1381.photobucket.com/albums/...pspyvhfwj1.jpg Here's the Von's in question, with a sliver of the gas station visible on the far left. |

:previous: Thanks Hoss!
'mystery' location. I believe this amateur photograph was taken for a photography contest (there were several others on ebay). http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/128...923/66vFny.jpg The description on the reverse says the photograph was taken along the Arro Seco, three miles below _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ Camp. I can't make out the name of the camp. I'm hoping one of you can help. I thought it would be fun to work our way south (3 miles) from the camp site and see just where the photographer took this image. http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/102...921/fy2Jbh.jpg reverse :previous: Another interesting tidbit is that the photographer lived on Bunker Hill. Does anyone know what stood at 336 So. Bunker Hill.....was it an apartment building or private residence? for search purposes: J.W. Moore 336 So. Bunker Hill St. Los Angeles |

If you look closely, the name of the Drive-In is on the Coca-Cola sign (red arrow below), but I can't quite make it out. (maybe Ron's....or Don's?) http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/128...923/RAqlnB.jpg detail I believe the G on the building might be for GOOD FOOD. (mostly a guess mind you) Any idea what the city worker/maintenance man is working on? |

:previous: You're always of immense help Hoss.:)
I believe we've seen the Switzer-land camp on NLA a few years back. Here's a photograph from the link you provided (we might have seen this image before) http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/102...922/YhJQrf.jpg https://www.kcet.org/shows/departure...-resorts-of-la It looks quite romantic and somewhat mysterious. I'm anxious to see what's left of the place. (I'll look for those old NLA posts) And it's so cool to see where the amateur photographer lived! Glad you recognized the address. |
Lots of excavation going on at the 5-OH site (5th & Olive) in Downtown.

:previous: Just amazing Hunter.
You know how we 'noirisher' love unearthed stairways and such. ;) So what subterranean room are the two people standing in that vintage photo? (it almost looks like a wide hallway, albeit with seats on one side) |
E_r, I remember...

I believe that is a side hallway in the old Philharmonic Auditorium. Looks like when they demolished it (in the 80's?) they just leveled it and filled over the lower levels with parking lot. |

'mystery' (undisclosed location along Foothill Blvd.) "1938 California Highway Patrol officer and his Harley" http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/128...924/5uZaoE.jpg http://www.ebay.com/itm/1938-Califor...4AAOSwPRlXm1fa In the background there appears to be a Y intersection (with pine(?)/evergreen trees in-between) and there's a sign above the man having car trouble on the right---> |
This spectacular view is from an ad in Western City Magazine announcing the 1938 Convention of the League of California Municipalities.
http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/xq90/924/5ohdV9.jpg I couldn't find any additional information on the convention. Western City Magazine still exists, but it's online archives only go back to 2006. :( http://www.westerncity.com/ This large building(s) caught my eye. http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/800...923/CppGKL.jpg detail It looks like 2 or 3 buildings (with three turrets?) in front of a larger white building. -anyone have an idea what I'm looking at here? (are the two dark 'openings' at ground level on the left side of building #1 entrances to parking) __ And just for fun, here's a closer look at the bottom third of the photograph. http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/128...921/1du5HN.jpg detail It looks like there's a building in the space where Court flight is suppose to be. (I must be seeing things) note the Bank of Italy (later B of A) building in the lower right corner---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------> now look up:previous: Here's the Bank of Italy (International) Building during construction of new city hall in 1926. http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/128...921/7fehT1.jpg WandP Maybe we've discussed this before, but I'm confused by these two smaller buildings. http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/102...923/ZmjQPL.jpg the tall arched window portion looks like an addition to the International (Bank of Italy) Building. But what about the oddly shaped building next to it on the left? |

:previous: Hey, thanks MichaelRyerson and HossC for identifying Engine company #16 as part of the building I had asked about earlier.
& thanks to Godzilla for reminding me I have a sub-par memory.;) The C.H.I.P.S photograph was posted before, but we didn't figure out the exact location (Huntington archives says the location is somewhere in San Bernardino) |
Here's another Lloyd Wright house courtesy of Julius Shulman. This is "Job 1559: Redlich (Ivo) House (Beverly Hills, Calif.), 1953".
http://i809.photobucket.com/albums/z...1.jpg~original The inside features exposed stonework. I don't see any interior doors. http://i809.photobucket.com/albums/z...2.jpg~original That looks like a well stocked bar. http://i809.photobucket.com/albums/z...3.jpg~original Sadly, this is as close as we get to seeing the upper floor. http://i809.photobucket.com/albums/z...4.jpg~original All from Getty Research Institute The house is/was at 602 North Arden Drive in Beverly Hills. A page at ncmodernist.org says, "1946 - The Ivo Redlich House, Garage, and Landscaping, 602 North Arden, Beverly Hills CA. House destroyed, possibly around 1988." The property websites, on the other hand, still give a build date of 1947. You can't see the house from the street due to the high hedges, so I had to get an aerial view. It's obviously different from the first Shulman picture, but has roughly the same proportions, so maybe "heavily modified" is more accurate than "destroyed". Does anyone know any more details? http://i809.photobucket.com/albums/z...5.jpg~original Google Maps via supercharge.info |
