I added the buildings that Kevin mentioned and added an 850' building at the ECC site just to see how it would look.
Answer: freakin' amazing. That would give the skyline great symmetry.

Yea they sure are and my biggest fear about the skyline is becoming a reality. Level skylines are just not interesting. I like skylines that have a good height contrast and unfortunately, at least for now, our skyline will be lacking that.

NYC_Longhorn Jul 29, 2014 2:10 PM

In defense of the 400 footers, I'm realizing how much the density and in-fill makes a skyline feel more impressive.... however I really think this city is in need of a 1000 footer to anchor the skyline... I like the austinion but it feels like a temporary placeholder for the tallest building and is not grand enough to be the Austin's tallest.... It would have been great to see T Stacy or the planetarium ... But something better.... You know what I'm saying ? A building everyone marvels at....

This is amazing. They want to sink Riverside Dr. and build land bridges over it!

Proposed Town Lake Park Plan Includes More Green Space

http://i.imgur.com/acULnqO.png

"At Palmer Events Center yesterday, consultants from Tur Partners laid out an initial proposal for a long-term plan to reinvent Town Lake Park, which includes Auditorium Shores, the Liz Carpenter Fountain, Palmer Events Center, and the Long Center. Such a proposal could take 10 to 20 years to build out completely, and would be contingent on City Council approval and funding."

I'm with the guy interviewed on KVUE that said there needs to be some free parking included.

KevinFromTexas Jul 30, 2014 6:07 AM

Riverside Drive through Butler Park and Auditorium Shores isn't particularly bad to cross as a pedestrian. Still, let's consider the benefits of sinking Riverside Drive. Basically they would cut and cap it. It wouldn't be a true tunnel, rather a trench with structural concrete placed on top to create a bridge over the trench. The benefit would be a larger uninterrupted park space. There would be more park space without the above ground street, plus all the road infrastructure and signage would go away. The traffic benefit for the street would be that even during huge festivals the street could remain open. So even during the 4th of July fireworks display and large concerts/festivals, the street wouldn't need to be closed.

Waste of money. I don't think that road is necessary. Why not just remove it. Spend the money on sinking I35.

Riverside Drive is a city street. That would be the responsibility of the City of Austin to do. I-35 on the other hand is the State of Texas' responsibility. It is TXDot's screaming baby.

corvairkeith Jul 31, 2014 2:25 AM

Since C3 has taken over Auditorium Shores let them pay for the sinking of Riverside. Just think of how many more tickets they could sell with the increased capacity.

Actually I think the waste he was refering to is the investment in Riverside....... I agree we should not "sink" money into Riverside.
I actually would like Riverside to remain... and yes, put the $$ saved from that into 35.

As to 35 vs Boston's big dig...
ToTally worth it.
Changed downtown Boston in the most amazing ways!!!!!!
Love it.

Re-posting a link that Hill Country submitted on the Austin forums. I know there are visitors who have asked for more things posted on this thread regarding Austin progress. Below is a drone video that is very well done.

I agree about sinking 35 too, and it should take priority over Riverside. But separating the two possible projects, sinking Riverside would make the park even more amazing.

MyFox 7 just did a story about the Aloft and their next door NIMBYs and high rises in general on the 9:00 PM news. Jude gave a pretty good interview, and it looks like they showed one of Chiveman'a future skyline renderings from the previous page in this thread.
