A prominent Houston developer will build an Italian-inspired luxury hotel on a high bluff overlooking Austin and the Hill Country, alongside a new office building project.

Giorgio Borlenghi, founder of Interfin Cos. LP and a native of Milan, Italy, will build the Hotel Granduca northwest of the corner of Capital of Texas Highway and Bee Cave Road.

“The Granduca is different from any other hotel in this country with its fine Italian elegance,” Borlenghi said. “We manage it ourselves because the type of service we provide can’t be replicated. Only we can do it.”

Austin-based Riverside Resources owns the land and is building an office building alongside the hotel. Principals for Riverside Resources did not respond to a request for comment about its partnership with Interfin or more information about the office project.

Borlenghi said some site work has been initiated, but the official beginning of construction of the 194-room, nine-story hotel is April 14. Ludlow & Associates Construction LLC of Houston is the general contractor. That company handled construction of the first Granduca.

Thanks for sharing Kevin. It's funny, I also see the guy on the unicycle from time to time. Btw that 2nd to last shot is incredibe, that you can clearly see IBM and the Arboretum.

Those are actually those two office midrises at 183 & Mopac, but they're still a good 11 to 12 miles away from where I was atop the South Austin Hospital parking garage. That other midrise in the background is maybe another half mile further north along Mopac north of 183. I have been able to see the Aboretum Buildings from that spot, though just west of there. There's also a huge water tank at Mopac just north of Howard Lane. It's actually just inside of Williamson County. I've been able to see it from that spot as well. It's almost 17 miles away from that spot. And I've always been able to see those huge concrete elevator towers in Buda about 11 to 12 miles to the south down in Hays County. So from atop that parking garage it's possible to see into at least two other counties, and that's without considering some random water tower in Bastrop County. This camera I got is pretty good. It's a Nikon Coolpix l820. It has 30x optical zoom which is almost three times as much as my last camera. I was playing around with it tonight while waiting in line at Dan's Hamburgers, and shot a photo of the moon and easily picked up craters.

That's impressive. I gotta save up for a camera like that.

Well, we know it won't be a skyscraper because of the location. Hopefully it'll still be an awesome design. This version was my favorite design period of anything proposed for or built in Austin:

I'm still crying at night that it wasn't built. ;)

I'm just happy there isn't going to be a Walmart built on that site.

^^^ Amazing. Hard not to look at that photo and think a little about London, or Paris... I know we are a long way off. But still, imagining Seaholm and Green Water in there, along with the density occurring "organically" all around... wow, just wow.

SOOOO happy for 21C!!!! Lord knows we need a push for more museums in this great city

Just thinking about how nicely The Fairmont, and 99 Trinity will fill in on the eastern part of the skyline.

I've played at and stayed at the original in Louisville many times.
Glad to see it.

That's only the SW corner of Downtown. In the near future the cranes in the SE corner may top the number in the SW corner.

KevinFromTexas Apr 17, 2014 10:57 PM

Yep. Fairmont will have 3, 99 Trinity Tower should have at least one, and each of the three towers in Waller Park Place should have one each. There's also 70 Rainey Street which will probably need one.
