Here's 323 N Citrus Avenue in 2007. As far as I can tell, the lawn now starts at the front of the house, but it's hard to see as the house and lawn are now virtually hidden by a hedge along the sidewalk.

434 S Rampart: Got all excited when the address turned up seemingly in connection to our old friend William Edward Hickman, killer of Marion Parker... but the connection was to an adjacent article describing the death by pneumonia of a police detective who lived there. At least the building still stands.

Actually, almost the entire 700 block of Normandie is on the Bedbug Registry :( -with a few exceptions.

After a few commercial buildings (and Gilmore Field), today's Julius Shulman post shows an apartment building. It's the Gayley Apartments to be precise. This is "Job 270: William E. Foster, Gayley Apartments (Los Angeles, Calif.),1948".

There's no address with this photoset, but the first two images shows a small sign with "933" on it. I thought that 933 Gayley Avenue might be a good place to start my search, and got lucky first time. Trees now make it very difficult to see the building from the street, so here's a view from above. The plot stretches all the way back to Weyburn Place.

The online building records show that three new construction permits for this address were approved on June 25, 1947. The first is for the main apartment building, while the other two are for a 4-car and a 3-car garage at the rear. I assume that these are the original garages from the building permits.

Hats Off was remade by Laurel and Hardy as The Music Box utilizing the same flight of steps. While a washing machine was delivered in Hats Off, a piano would be delivered
in The Music Box.

Contrary to popular belief, the long staircase is not the same one used by the Three Stooges in their 1941 film An Ache In Every Stake. Those stairs (147 steps) are approximately two miles northeast, located at 2212 Edendale Place.

It's on the corner of 7th and Los Angeles Street and is apparently part of the Santee Court Project, described thusly:

Santee Court: A live-work community in the heart of the Los Angeles Fashion District, nine concrete frame loft buildings ranging in height from 5 to 12 stories constructed in the Los Angeles “Garment District” prior to World War Two. The intent of the project: to convert existing structures from industrial use to residential units. Also involved was the conversion of the existing basements to under ground parking. A dynamic analysis of the structures per City of Los Angeles Division 95 was performed to design the concrete shear walls that were used to strengthen the buildings.

This one is Building 700: Built in 1908, this building is the oldest in the Santee Court Project

Cool! Yes, the large shape to the left and down a bit from the pointy tower (Berke Mansion, up at 2nd and Bunker Hill Avenue) is the Rowan apartment hotel at 122 S Hope. Behind it would be 116.

Here's another view of the burger stand at the Dozier and Rowan Loop from nearly two years ago. It looks like signage advertised Pepsi rather than Coke in the picture above. The location of this image was identified by WS1911.

Is Richard a member of NoirLA under a pen-name?

As the story opens up, the tabloid-style reporter chronicles the history of both the 115 year old King Eddy Saloon and other speakeasy's in DLA. Half way though the story Richard mentions Police corruption and Mayor Frank Shaw ultimate resignation, where an underground network of tunnels under DLA was built during the early 1900's and in particular during the Prohibition Period. Richard mentions that this tunnel went from City Hall to the Biltmore Hotel connecting all the hotels together. If this is so, you can imagine the number of illicit events these passage ways saw, booze, hookers, even embarrassing dead bodies as millions of dollars were stashed in the City Hall's vault!

Richard is the only person I have ever heard accuse LA government of being so corrupt that even the Eastern mob, Bugsy and Lucky couldn't make inroads.
...This statement is why the mob started nightclubs within the unincorporated area of West Hollywood along the Sunset Strip instead of at the Ambassador Hotel and other well established hotels within City limits.
...This statement is why the Gay community was ghettoed into LAPD-free WeHo.
...This statement is the germ of what would later become a whole genre of film-making framed around a sense of dreaded foreshadowing, a sense that things were not what they appeared to be. Seeing this video made me rent the great movie, LA Confidential again where the character of the Chief of LA Police was portrayed as a cold-blooded murderer.

Here's my challenge. The King Eddy Saloon is located at 131 E 5th Street (5th & Main Streets) in downtown Los Angeles. Over the years of following noirish LA, I have been amazed at the detective work offered by its members. This is a very unique community. Can anyone offer up more evidence of the mystery tunnels?
...Maybe the basement of the Biltmore has a similar bricked up passage way at 506 S Grand Ave.
...Perhaps City Hall's underground parking garage at 200 N Spring St has an unexplained steel door?
...Were all the old Vaudeville theaters on Broadway linked together? Think of all the cash that could evade the new income-tax declaration. I suspect this is the Mother Lode of Noir.

The two women in the garden are the same two women but all of the pictures were taken on different days. In the ones on the porch, the flowers are just slightly different around the porch. The first one I found was taken earlier than the second one with more people since the blooms on the rose to the left has faded.

The women in the garden picture was also taken on a different day since the women are wearing different clothes
