Well, as far as I know Magellan is still possible. Planetarium is deader than a doornail.
And things are definitely not slowing down any time soon.

Crossing my fingers for the Magellan tower, and this Fifth + West tower... and the Fairmont... and the poppy and just everything else. Just keep it coming. I need shit to pay attention to when I move down in a few weeks ;)

As for a slow down, the only slow down that I could see is if the economy goes to s*** again, other than that Austin will continue to add towers. Also there is a tower proposed for midtown, looks to be in the 300ft. range. I know it was proposed yrs back but if I can find the rendering and or information I'll share it.

There's no reason to doubt the Magellan project yet, in my opinion.

Sooo awesome. Great find. Another gap in our skyline will be filled by this one. In this case, a much-needed gap that I never expected to be filled (due to the CVC). Yet another example of how southwest downtown is on fire right now.

The building's angled footprint appears to conform to one of the CVCs. It's making for some interesting designs.

I was looking at the area from overhead on Google Earth and I think that this is actually honoring the same CVC (probably from the Lamar bridge) as is being respected by both Gables and 7Rio. I love the idea of these view corridors actually being framed like this.

Yeah these small planning distinctions will aesthetically blossom once all filled in to their limits.

All the projects going on in Austin amazes me. It has changed so much so quickly.

If that building gets built on 5th st, I don't doubt that section will be the most populated section in all of Austin. I just wonder if it will still continue to be dead. That area mostly feels just residential and not enough things going on. Pedestrian night life doesn't really start until you get to 360 and 2nd Street, or if you go to W 6th St. I hope Seaholm and Greenwater will change that.

Also, a little bit off topic, but considering that Austin is a "party" town, I constantly hear it being compared to New Orleans, and even Las Vegas. I'm just wondering, that if it is the case, why does Austin close so early? Does anybody here think that Austin will someday be a 24hr city, or at least stop selling alcohol around 4am? I'm under the impression (I may be wrong) that LA, LV, New Orleans and NYC stop selling alcohol after 4am. It be cool to see Austin open just a little later. I know for sure the city won't have a hard time adapting, considering that there are neat venues that stay open 24hrs (Magnolia's, Kerbey Lane, Bennu, Epoch, Buzz Mill). I also wonder why Austin isn't consistently flooded with pedestrian crowds throughout the day in Downtown. I'm sure better public transportation will probably change that, but that's also an entirely different topic.

It won't be visible from most places, but that's a good thing. You don't want a city skyline to just be a grill with nothing behind it. Projects like the bowie, 7rio, and aspen heights will all add density in the SW region of DT.
Is the current building at 5th and West anything significant? I think I know which one it is....must not be special if I can't remember something in my own hood.

It's the Texas Press Association. I haven't been able to find anything saying where/when they are moving yet.

Considering it's riverside resources I'd be willing to bet we'll see this actually happen. Whitley showed up almost over night.
Migol, about what you mentioned earlier.. I really appreciate the semi sleepy residential feel the SW has at night. I used to love the crazy busy vibe (and still do at times), but drunk assholes DO INDEED get old after so many years living downtown :slob: Like, how many agro dudes in Ed Hardy shirts looking for a fight do we really need??

Agreed. It gets more sophisticated and bougie the further west you go. These projects aren't going to change that. If anything, they'll increase it. But I do think that street activity is a good thing. Seaholm (and its accompanying Trader Joe's) and the library will increase street activity in the area but they wouldn't do so nearly as much if it weren't for the streets being connected. West Street connecting to Cesar Chavez, the street connecting 3rd Street with Cesar Chavez (I don't know what they'll end up calling it), and the 2nd Street connection (most of all) will actually allow for free movement in the area so the whole area will become much more activated in the next 2 years or so. For lack of a better term, it will finally become a full-fledged member of downtown, which it hasn't been, really, over its history.

I still wish they would connect the street going through the Gables buildings with 3rd Street. At worst, a pedestrian connection, at best a sort of curving street that makes it an etension of Bowie Street. I think a pedestrian path is more realistic, though. And could end up being more interesting.

No doubt, it would be quite cool, and possibly even attract a few tourists, if one were able to walk over the Union Pacific tracks and watch trains go by. Not to mention the photo op of the City of Austin Power Plant sign with the skyline in the background from a new perspective. Denver's pedestrian bridge near it's Union Station has been a marvelous success and I have no doubt such a project in Austin would enjoy similar circumstances.
