A bit of a head scratcher, but Porter has the right size aircraft for this route and properly timed connections to the maritimes. I wonder if they got any incentive to run this route.

Whether you connect YMM-Maritmes over YYZ or YOW, it doesn’t make much difference. However, YOW has no competition unlike YYZ. Can also probably stimulate a lot of new O&D traffic. Certainly makes the likelihood of seasonal YOW-YDF launching next summer much higher.

After 6pm every YYC-YVR flight was cancelled, along with 3 more this morning. The real issues come in trying to rebook those connecting onwards to Asia with limited availability (especially to those who cannot transit the US).

Well its understandable there isn't an immediate solution, but something desperately needs to be done.

Don't worry.. 4 years ago Nav Canada was going to have this solved in 2 years... I have complete faith in them to now have it solved in another 2 years... 2027 mark your calendar. /s

But seriously all of aviation came out of covid on the back foot, but for some reason YVR hasn't managed to get it together... Either is a toxic work environment like EWR, or just pure incompetence, either way on Tuesday 10,000+ people had their plans ruined by Nav Canada and thats totally unacceptable.

It looks like Air Canada plans to put the Airbus A330 on the Calgary YYC - London LHR UK - YYC route, from End of March to End of April in 2026.

Last time AC used the A330 from YYC to Europe was pre COVID.

Latest google earth imagery of YHU's new terminal, dated April 19, 2025.

That's a lot of gates for an airport that won't be allowed to serve international markets (over 70% of YUL's passengers fly international). You're going to see a handful of Q400s there a day, at most. Maybe Flair will use YHU to relaunch some domestic routes out of Montreal. That's about it.

Overkill, to say the least. YHU isn't YTZ, and never will be.

Doesn't help that under the governments APRR ATC staff shortage has no entitlement for compensation and considered an "act of god", leaving front line airline staff take the brunt of the abuse, as there's only so much they can do.

On Tuesday night I heard a passenger yelling at a WS agent who just told them to 'take it up with their MP' and walked away.

Dominion301 Aug 29, 2025 11:05 PM

The plan for YHU was 9 gates, so it looks like 8/9 bridges have been installed thus far.

9 gates could mean a bank of flights to YVR/YYC/YEG/YWG/YYZ/YTZ/YHZ/YYT/YOW but 3 of those would be DH4s.

Seems like YTZ & YHZ will be the first two routes.

Looks like F8 added the two 738 back in service for winter schedule. Both 738 will be operated out of YEG base and the 7M8 will move to YYZ and YYC base.

Update in the past couple of days likely result from this change:

YYC-YKF +3x weekly
YYC-YYZ +3x weekly
YYZ-YEG +2x weekly
YYZ-YWG +2x weekly
YYZ-YHZ +3x weekly
YYZ-FLL -2x weekly
YYZ-MCO +1x weekly
YYZ-PUJ +2x weekly
YYZ-MBJ +6x weekly
YVR-YEG +1x weekly

With the YYC-YKF schedule, maybe there's room for additional service to/from YKF, 3x weekly in total.

YOW will be the first airport in Canada getting a SA CAT II approach. Special approval is required for an airline to use this type of approach.

The procedure will become active on October 2, 2025, on runway 07.

This will enable approved airlines equipped with autoland or a HGS to land at YOW in bad weather (below CAT I minimums).

More info on these SA CAT II approaches can be found here.

Why can’t YHU have international flights, or at least transborder, again?

I would love a YHM connection to it, hopefully that can happen.

Some form of CAT II is long overdue for YOW, especially on days when fog from the nearby Rideau River can cause thick morning fog…not to mention winter snow.

Agreed.

As runway 07 only has one RVR, the procedure minimums will probably be a DH of 100ft and an RVR 1600ft. If YOW airport authority adds a second RVR sensor, the minimums would match a conventional CAT II approach (DH of 100ft / RVR 1200ft).

YYC is getting one for Rwy 35L/17R in December. Will be nice during low vis ops with snow removal.

Navcan is a pathetic joke. Not the staff who work there but the management. How do you manage not to attract enough candidates for a very highly paid indoor job that requires no postsecondary education or apprenticeship?

Time for the Federal Liberals to own the mistake of creating this neoliberal monster in the first place and take it back under core government responsibilities.

Discover’s YYC-FRA route this winter is being reduced as of 19DEC25 from daily to 6x weekly and then 5x weekly for most of Jan-Mar: https://www.aeroroutes.com/eng/250827-4ynw25na

Wonder what airfield improvements they might do at YHU with that new terminal. Looks like only 1 runway there for commercial use and it's a long way from the new terminal, especially assuming most landings will be on 24R instead of 06L. Looks like some awkward taxi routes to the terminal and some crossing of the main runway, which I don't think is really ideal either, as well as using the entire length of the general aviation runway as a taxi route from or to the western end of the main runway.

This is great, I'm glad to see this happening, but really without getting the RVR down to 1200 it won't be very helpful. Same situation as now where 737's ready to do an autoland are holding with RVR's of 1200 and a Q400 comes in and does an LPV, hand flown and lands. Hopefully they add some RVR sensors and and bring it down to 1200, this could also be super useful in YEG.

It won't solve all of YOW's problems, but it will definitely help. I agree that an RVR 1200 would have been better. Maybe it's in the plans to add a second RVR sensor. Who knows. We'll see.

As for those Q's shooting LPV's with RVRs down to 1200, they clearly have Ops Spec approval to go down to 1200, whereas the 737s don't. Some of our Q400 operators here in Canada are HGS equipped, meaning they can hand fly down to the runway even in CAT III conditions if need be (assuming crew are properly trained and approved).

That 737 that was holding probably didn't have a HGS, and needed an RVR of 1600. That's the difference. Either way, they were both following the rules.

WS officially has more 787s on the way. This morning they announced a massive order with Boeing that includes 7 more 789s with an option of 4 more.

Also 60 Max 10s.

The mess at EWR was blamed on Trump; so I guess YVR can be blamed on Trudeau and Carney.
