So, we should get a bet going on what building will break ground next.

As far as we know. The last reported start date was January. I go by the site every day after work, so I got my eye on it.

This is awesome. What could he be filming!?

corvairkeith Dec 6, 2013 4:45 AM

From Texas Monthly:
"If we're going to recklessly speculate, though, the odds are much better that the signage and the equipment are for the From Dusk Till Dawn TV series, which is currently filming in Austin, and which is directed and produced by Tarantino BFF Robert Rodriguez. Tarantino both wrote and starred in the original film, and the idea that Rodriguez is tossing in a Pulp Fiction reference as an easter egg for fans and to get some nerd-juices flowing seems pretty likely."

The series will be on a new TV network launching next year called "El Rey." It's a joint venture between Rodriguez and Comcast, and it's target audience is
English speaking Latinos.

Aspen Heights Apartments 22-story 200ft @ 8th & Nueces

The number of big projects being proposed and under construction is getting freaking ridiculous. But that's good.

wwmiv Dec 9, 2013 5:05 PM

Like I've said elsewhere, this is almost certainly connected to a chain student housing development:

Good thing is Aspen Heights usually does lowrise apartment complex-type stuff from what I've seen on their site, but we get a 200ft highrise.

It's just odd to me that they would pick a site so far removed from campus. That wouldn't exactly be different from their M.O., though, as their UTSA project was a good deal further away from UTSA's campus than this is (they always provide a dedicated shuttle to and from campus just for their residents... so it's not a big deal).

So... it could very well be a distinct non-student project by someone totally different, but I'm very much assuming that it is Aspen Heights, as they're a well known chain with a very unique name that I can't see anyone crimping off of. I imagine that they have the name trademarked, actually, so if it isn't them, you can expect a name change shortly.

^^Yeah, it's definitely being done by the same firm. The name of the applicant is Aspen Heights, and the mailing address is 1301 S. Capital of Texas Highway #201, which matches the name and address of the firm that develops student housing. I didn't know they were based in Austin.

Here's the Design Commission Report

The applicant info is on page 13 and the elevations are on pages 33, 34, & 35.
