TS flew YYZ-YUL-IST from 2011 to 2014, so technically this is a resumption of service, albeit non stop vs direct.

What is even more interesting is they have onward interline agreements in IST on Turkish airlines. That gives them access to the Middle East, Africa and Eastern Europe. Given Turkish is a star alliance partner with Air Canada, I would not have expected that.

Transat also has interline/codeshare agreement with Porter on the Toronto end.

Makes sense. Their previous attempt on the route didn’t last long, but it taught them well. They know they can’t make this one work on O&D alone.

They’ll also now have full codeshare feed into YYZ from PD.

This whole saga has been fascinating to watch from afar as someone who knew the 'mysterious' owner in a past life. My main takeaway from this is that a lot of people in the area have a very good reason to be upset with their local politicians.

It's a bit of an outlier. In Newfoundland, municipalities don't own airports. Stephenville Airport was owned by a not for profit corporation that bankrupted itself 20 years ago trying to run an airport that was too big for the region it served. The Town then funneled money into it, tens of thousands per month to keep it alive and then gave half a million to Porter Airlines to fly in twice a week during peak season.

PAL left in January 2020. Porter had their last flight there the same month. Sunwing flew there in 2022 but ended their domestic schedule after WestJet bought them later that year. There were no cargo operators in Stephenville. And, this is the most shocking part, there isn't a single private pilot using Stephenville to store an aircraft. Nobody uses it at all.

This Dymond guy showed up and offered to pay off the entire debt load of the airport authority and they took advantage of it. Stephenville took that guy to the cleaners (he's broke and the Town and airport authority owe nothing) and I don't think they even realize it yet because the people there are just fighting with themselves over an airport they didn't really own.

It’s certainly been quite the saga to follow. Does Carl Dymond have any relation to the Dymon Storage company that are Ottawa-based and have been expanding like crazy recently including now having locations in the GTA?

AF will be bringing the 77W to YOW on Sundays for the month of September. There's also a one-off 359 on I believe 29SEP25.

Etihad Airways (EY) upgraded their YYZ service to the A380 starting today, joining Emirates (EK) existing A380 service. Great to see both EK and EY A380's on the ground at the same time.

I enjoyed my stay at Atlantis. Beware the cost of food on site however! Get your booze by taking the shuttle launch over to Nassau. :)

What frequently gets left out. The federal government (via the Infrastructure bank) is providing loans to the Calgary airport authority to make this happen.

https://cib-bic.ca/en/projects/trade...-aviation-hub/

That said, it is a good project. Good to see more aviation work repatriated to Canada.

YOW-LIR will be interesting to watch. Quite a long flight, and at the limit of what the plane can do.

Good project, assuming the loans get paid back lol.

I wonder why the CIB would be involved in the funding? The deal seems to be mostly between Lufthansa and Westjet. Both are private companies with their own money.

I think it is part of a larger campus that the Calgary airport wants to built out. So the airport authority has to build out infrastructure for the building. Not certain if the actual building is owned by the airport authority or not.

You expect some costs associated with building roads and services.

They’re still loans that be paid back, but probably loans with favorable terms. I suspect that bringing the maintenance to Canada is not as cost-effective as in the US and thus CIB’s involvement.

Ak okay, being part of a plan for general airport infrastructure, I can see how it fits in.

I was only joking about the loans being paid back ;) I assumed they would.

Good point about it pushing the E2’s range limit. WG pre-pandemic seasonally served YOW-LIR.

In addition to GCM being a brand new, never served route out of YOW, it looks like a second brand new route will be coming soon with the breakup of 5T from 3H (Air Inuit) as they cease to be sister companies effective early August. 5T on Saturdays are adding a YVP stop on the way to YFB:

5T127 YOW-YVP 1035 1250
5T127 YVP-YFB 1330 1440
5T128 YFB-YVP 1715 1830
5T128 YVP-YOW 1910 2115

Starts 09AUG25.
