:previous: I like that photograph Hoss.
I just came across this on eBay. Chinatown, Los Angeles 1895. http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/xq90/908/CHREpF.jpg http://www.ebay.com/itm/China-Town-L...item20fcc926ae This street doesn't look familiar at all. detail: I thought this might be a clue; especially if it's a family name. http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/800...661/3gYF1a.jpg __ |
Cross-dressing, circa 1934.
"Miss Francis Orlando, pictured in boy's clothing last night when she was arrested by sleuths investigating a street brawl. The girl declared she had been masquerading as a boy for more than two years." http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/xq90/538/aoNT0y.jpg http://www.ebay.com/itm/1934-Los-Ang...item4196f66338 info: http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/xq90/913/HTYmcJ.jpg |
"8x10 Photo c 1938 Los Angeles Beach Club."
http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/128...540/cKxrLX.jpg http://www.ebay.com/itm/photo-c-1938...item43dd79bc2c ...so what building is in the background? At first I thought the twin towers might belong to the Santa Monica Depot...but they don't match. http://forum.skyscraperpage.com/show...&postcount=588 and that certainly doesn't explain the 'pyramid' on the right. http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/800...910/ZHcdyD.jpg detail ________________ postscript: Could the 'pyramid' be part of the roof to the Deauville Beach Club? (but that doesn't explain the two towers) http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/640...537/mwEycR.jpg |

WigWag, I had heard the diner was somewhere near the Goldwyn Lot, but that's not saying much. Considering they did little to cover or camouflage other pickup shots, I suspect there really was a diner named Charley's. Godzilla, pursuant to your comment above, I did a bit of surfing on the web and came up with this. Alas, no location mentioned. http://www.trinidadco.com/forum/show...igil%29-b-1931 Cheers, Jack |

Man! Those steps went on forever! Someone was pretty ambitious to include a water feature all the way down. ...looking...thinking...searching... I found were I got it. It was on VickieLester.com - she comes up with some great pics of ye olde Hollywoode personalities, but this one caught my eye: http://vickielester.com/2013/01/19/w...ol-old-houses/ |

Planned in 1939 and finished in 1952. The Park La Brea townhouses were designed by Leonard Schultz & Son (New York) with associate architect Earl T. Heitschmidt in 1941. The Towers were designed by Leonard Schultz Associates with consulting architects Stanton + Kaufmann in 1948. According to Wikipedia "The street layout was created in a masonic pattern as a reference to the masonic heritage of the Metropolitan Life Insurance Company [the original developers]". I'm not really up on Masonic imagery, so I can't confirm or deny that. One last look back: Quote:

I couldn't help but notice the "25er" in Godzilla's photograph of the corner of Wilshire & Hoover. (red arrow, far right)

I'm surprised no one's come across a matchbook or advertisement for this this unique place. (and it's not that far from 'Monkey Island') |

Actually, this isn't the same "25er"... it seems that the 25er bars must have been Stan's cocktail sideline. There was a Stan's at the NW corner of Wilshire and Western, which can be glimpsed in pictures below; ER's view, in which a bit of the Wilshire-Western drive-in's canopy can be seen, shows the 25er next to that Stan's, rather than the one at the SW corner of Wilshire & Hoover. In the back ground at far left is 3832 Wilshire (where southbound Manhattan Place ends at Wilshire)--see below and here: http://wilshireboulevardhouses.blogs...lease-see.html). Above the 25er in ER's shot is the domed roof of the Wilshire Arts building, and the billboards above. https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-R...erWW.jpg?gl=USLAPL The 25er is not yet built--the drive-in may not yet be Stan's, but rather its predecessor, a Harry Carpenter's. https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-Q....bmp.jpg?gl=US 3832 Wilshire Blvd http://wilshireboulevardhouses.blogs...lease-see.html |
^^^Interesting, the 25er.
Reminds me of an old bar in Old Pasadena that still exists, called the 35er, which, from what my friend tells me, she refers to sometimes as the "Dirty Diver." She likes to go to that bar. I've never been to it myself, though I've driven and walked by it countless times. This picture was posted in this thread before, but let's revisit: Old Pasadena, 1954. You can see the 35er. http://jpg2.lapl.org/pics41/00055293.jpg LAPL |

The street level photo below from 1976 shows that intersection looking south. You can see one of the four-story Metromedia Square buildings in the background. KPOL was a "beautiful music" AM station at 1540 on the dial. It now has the call letters KMPC and is an all Korean language station. Many of you will remember KMPC as formerly being at 710 on the dial and owned by Gene Autry. http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_dEwYZDt09y...+Blvd+1976.jpg http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_dEwYZDt09y...+Blvd+1976.jpg |
