It looks a bit clunky from afar but I like it close up. Scando vibe for sure.

Nice. Our cities need more of this (mainly the scale, but I love the cladding

I'm confused how a 4 storey, 500 foot or more long podium built right up to the lot line for parking reduces oppressiveness particularly on a tree lined residential street. I remember the building 99 King is replacing having a giant ass wall on King. The new building has more windows for sure. I assumed the main floor is commercial with the basement parking jutting above ground because of the large gradient. I totally agree if the main floor is all parking. |

That's an average of 5 highrises per year, but with buildings taking at least 2 years or longer to complete, I would say on average there are about 10 highrises u/c in downtown Calgary at any time. Currently there are 10 u/c and thus true to the average ;) |

Here are a few select reposts from the excellent Developments Halifax. These are from inner city areas outside downtown from the past few weeks. I thought they all showed something interesting about how the city is developing.
The basically brand new Almon/Robie skyline visible from the Citadel across the Commons https://i.imgur.com/bgMHGOH.png The area is only semi-finished but is really growing up. This is going to get widened to 4 lanes with one BRT lane each direction (that's why the building by the May St sign is set back); I could see it being turned into an LRT corridor. https://i.imgur.com/js6e9NZ.png Gottingen/Brunswick area with visible coloured paneling on modern projects meant to mimic the older wooden houses. That crane isn't for the concrete tower visible behind it, it's for a project in the foreground. https://i.imgur.com/bWN9KJ7.png Dutch Village Rd is coalescing into a medium density neighbourhood https://i.imgur.com/IjCcMq2.png King's Wharf in Dartmouth also accelerating a bit with some lowrise, the highise to the left, then a new highrise being started (Brightwork) https://i.imgur.com/TV8E3pG.png Dartmouth bridge area. This is the "old" round of construction; there is excavation happening for a new round of 30-40 storey buildings. https://i.imgur.com/NHQHqsz.png |

I don't care for the main tower at Richmond Yard but, I still give the developer credit for the overall masterplan. Dartmouth skyline may rapidly grow in the next few years but, it will also look like a giant people warehouse from Canuckistan. |

Posting to show how dense construction is in some areas of Halifax. There are seven major construction sites within 350 metres of MacDonald Bridge in Dartmouth. They range from 7 floors to 40 floors and all of the current construction sites are being built individually by developers and not part of a master planned area. Here are four of them as of last weekend. The others can be seen on my blog.

The nice thing about the Kevel is the lowrise masonry portion which has some detailing and tile mosaics. Then they're building another phase next door which will have a shorter tower, some more interesting lowrise bits, and a public waterfront portion. Then on top of that it's next to the canal daylighting project.
One weakness is that it's not integrated very well into the downtown for pedestrians due to some empty lots and curvy 70s era roads. |
8 Elm makes me angry. The bronze trim is great. The window wall isn't mullion heavy and any spandrel panels are indistinguishable from the vision glass but it still looks bad without uniform panel widths. The venting which could have been hidden in the generous cantilevered balcony slabs cleaning up the facade too.
