Here's a photo that's just titled "A front view of the Yale Apt. building set on a slight hill, with a recessed front entrance area." No date or address is listed, but now odinthor has identified it. https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag...eAptsHotel.jpg LAPL |
Wow, you people are good! Now I'd like to show you the pic from my parents 1938 album. You can see the Yale Hotel in the background, left side.
https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/pw...-no?authuser=0 Anyone care to guess what the gardens are? |
.
Welcome to NLA, edmeyer. :) The building in the (left) background of your parents' photograph doesn't appear to match the building at 975 Wilshire. The corner of the building in your photograph is angled. (I believe the term is cut-off corner) maybe . |
Yup, I agree. Now I'm stuck!

:previous:
I think the picture was taken in Lincoln Park, Long Beach. There was a Yale Hotel at 143 W 1st Street, adjacent to the park. The portion of the building I've circled is I think the top floors of the Security Pacific National Bank building at 102-110 Pine Ave. https://i.imgur.com/GWVPq7v.jpeg GSV |

This is the description: Shows a woman and several children by a display with a sign that reads "Belmont Branch Library." They are probably participating in a special event sponsored by the library. The three girls are wearing aprons and have cooking materials on the table in front of them. The four boys are dressed up and have a model sailboat and boat making materials on the table in front of them. The Columbia Building, Yale Hotel, and Heartwell Building and other structures are visible in the background. I believe Noir_Noir nailed it (with supporting material from Hoss). We're looking east from Lincoln Park. The Yale is at the northeast corner of Pacific and 1st. The belltower you see a block away is (still!) at the northwest corner of Pine and 1st. The Heartwell Bldg. was at the northwest corner of Ocean and Pine. This is a very familiar area through my whole life, and I laugh at myself for not recognizing it sooner! Edit Add: Oh, good grief--I have the Yale on my own site: https://i.postimg.cc/PxkPGr1G/HotYal.jpg odinthor collection You can see it third from the end at: https://home.csulb.edu/~odinthor/socal18.html, and the following chapter shows bits of the area as well: https://home.csulb.edu/~odinthor/socal19.html  |
Thank You, Thx, thx
I can't believe you found these photos. Looks like it definitely is where my parents' picture was taken! Wish they were still alive so I could show them what I found...
Thx again for the professional sleuthing... |

It seems to me that we had a post on a downtown truck stop some years back, but nothing turned up in a search..... .....I pulled up the '57 Yellow Pages, they had no classification for "Truck Stop".....I did find this.... https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag...370&fit=bounds ....note Paul's Signal Service at 1389 E. 7th St., this would be the n.w. corner of 7th and Alameda.....a 1960 permit.... https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag...720&fit=bounds .....the permit included a sketch of the improvements.... https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag...720&fit=bounds The sketch does not indicate pump islands, but prior permits confirm a Signal Oil station at the site, so this facility was possibly the truck stop in the photo....the site is now a portion of a large parking lot for L.A. Metro buses. |
Add re: Gary O. Greer of the above post....
https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag...720&fit=bounds Gary O. Greer, 82, of Barnhart MO. died Jan. 29, 2022, at his home. Mr. Greer was a professional truck driver and a member of the American Truck Historical Society. Born March 4, 1939, in Chester, Ill., he was the son of the late Ruth (Knowles) and Chester Greer. He was preceded in death by his wife of 56 years: Antoinette (Brady) Greer. |
richkay,
I have to say I really wasn't expecting a followup on Gary O. Greer. Nicely done. I also want to say I hope Mr. Greer enjoyed a fulfilling life. I know I'm speculating here but it seems like he was a solid fellow. |

I just happened upon this intriguing rppc on eBay. Selller's description:.."Real Photo Postcard Garden Fountain at Markham's Home in Hollywood, California" (the reverse is blank) https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/1...922/eXT8eq.jpg eBay Unless I'm mistaken, this the home of William F. Markham located at 1453 N. Vine Street. ..If so, this is by far the best photograph of the fountain and gardens! Most interesting (to me) is when it (Markham residence) was knowned as the Commonwealth House, a meeting place for various Communist organizations. Here's an earlier post. Quote:
Wait, there's more! Here's another must-see NLA post about the house by Lorendoc. (complete with Sanborn maps and photos) And here's a Markham post by Flyingwedge. (with probably the best photograph of the front of the house) . |

New info to me! The mention of Lankershim meant "boulevard" to me. I had no idea it was once a place name. So, wikipedia has a page with some of this interesting info: Lankershim, Los Angeles County, California https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lanker...ty,_California Lankershim and West Lankershim are historical names for an area in what is now the greater North Hollywood section of the San Fernando Valley region of Los Angeles County, California. Lankershim was originally named Toluca. The center of the town, laid out by James Boon Lankershim and his brother-in-law, I.N. Van Nuys, was the "intersection of present day Chandler Blvd. and Lankershim Blvd." Lankershim agreed to be annexed to the City of Los Angeles in 1923. The intent of annexation was to connect the settlement's access to the water from the Los Angeles Aqueduct system. West Lankershim agreed to be annexed to the City of Los Angeles in 1919. West Lankershim has been described as the "Valley Plaza area of North Hollywood" or as basically what is now called Valley Village. The name of the local post office was changed from Toluca to Lankershim in 1912. In 1925 the population of Lankershim was 2,000. The current name North Hollywood was adopted August 15, 1927 to capitalize "on the glamour of Hollywood to the southeast." The post office address was legally changed that day and "all the signs along Magnolia Boulevard, Lankershim Boulevard and other large highways had been painted out from signs and the new name substituted." There are maps and a couple photos at the link. |

The three main large structures at center are the (backsides of) the Brockman and Bronson bldgs at Seventh and Grand, and the big guy is the Athletic Club. Under construction, foreground, I'm not sure. It's now the site of the 1928 Foreman & Clark building. I'd guess this image dates to about 1918 (it's after the Ville de Paris went up, which you can be glimpsed behind the under-construction fellow, and which was put up in 1917). |

I ran across a snapshot today from the 1980s that piqued my interest because it reminded me of my former neighorhood of West Hollywood. . . .from eBay. https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/1...923/I8ri8j.jpg No, that isn't me. What intrigues me is the old stone pillar(?) on the left edge of the photo. Thanks for figuring the location of the Lytton Visual Arts Center, Beaudry. (and for the photo, Hoss) ... .but I'm still a bit confused by the eBay photograph. The photographer appears to be standing in the middle of the entrance to the parking lot (right?). . sooooooooo what is the marquee gate for. . . an exit? https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/8...923/kUAbqJ.jpg And in this aerial the buildings are where the lot should be. https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/1...924/gbBIcx.png Annnnnnd. . .this #2 building . . . https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/1...923/ECu4IR.jpg . .is this #2 building, right? https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/8...924/eznkHY.jpg If so, it's blocking the view of Apt. bldg #1. . . .sooooo the parking lot in the eBay photo would have to be behind it in order to see Apt. building #1, right? The answer is probably obvious and I'm going to be embarrassed. :runaway: . |
Since only 4 floors of the 6+ floor apartment building are visible in the eBay image is it possible that there was rooftop parking on "Building #2"?
Or was there maybe a parking ramp at that location back in the day? It sort of looks like the marquee *might* be located over the top of a ramp to me. |
:previous:
From my original post, here is the lower level parking lot and gallery, so I think that vexedbystuff is correct that the marquee was at the top of a ramp. The strip mall was only built in the late-80s. The section labeled #2 by e_r is actually part of the bank - see GSV. Quote:

There are a couple of things that I've never noticed about the old St. Francis Hotel / Apartments. For instance, the 'appendage' (wing?) sticking out in the back on the east side. https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/1...923/fak3H3.jpg It's virtually impossible to see it from any angle. (especial after the Marshall's store was built directly to the east) I thought perhaps it was an addition (annex?) but I see it is original to the building. (see below) https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/1...922/tVh2H2.jpg LATimes JHGraham Another thing I didn't know was that the hotel's garage was located on the opposite side of Hollywood Boulevard. (that's rather inconvient) Here's a photograph of it. https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/1...922/sjE65l.jpg LATimes JHGraham The garage is no longer there. _______________________ I was really intrigued about Kenneth Anger living in the St. Francis, Snix. I had never heard that before. I saw a couple of mentions of it online but without much detail. Does anyone know when he was a resident? Was it when he was young or later in his life? I especially like this, "Behind the false walls are/were 20 foot ceilings with gothic arches and pillars, the cellars vast and concrete." Jack Dragna was a Mafia boss in Los Angeles for decades. He didn't always get along with the flashier Mickey Cohen, but he persevered. John Roselli was "Handsome Johnny" (biography titled as such) who became the mob's "ambassador to Hollywood" for years. I'm oversimplifying some pretty tangled history here, but it's interesting to see this article.
Russo and Canzoneri don't ring a bell for me. Roselli's biography by Lee Server is worth a read, IMO. |
