NOTE: 4th & Brazos-Tower 1 seems to have received a bump from 44/656' to 50/705'.
That makes 9 projects under development over 700'. Also, two more towers popped up on the radar late last week. We don't know how tall they will be. One of them has the potential to be pretty tall (near the CC). The other is encumbered by a CVC over a chunk of its site (West Sixth area). |
So, based on what's on the board today, The Independent (Austin's current tallest at 690') will be the 10th or 11th tallest by 2026ish!?!
WOW! |

I really like 4th and Brazos. It's not just a bunch of blue glass.
Not a fan of the ginormous podium though. In the future when there are self-driving cars there are going to be a lot of loft apartments with strange, split level floorplans that advertise a sloping living room floor as a feature :P |
Is that wood in the spandrel spaces? If so, that would be very unique. The 17 floors of parking is a bit egregious, but otherwise this looks pretty awesome, with a huge dependency on the materials used.
|
It's probably a fake wood material similar to what's being used on the midrise Whole Foods expansion on the other side of downtown.
|
Yeah I agree I like the wood look. This is a great looking building! Love the ground floor retail and Paseo!
|
The rounded corners looks a bit retro-80s to me. But I like it.

I just heard it floating around somewhere else on the forum.
|
That Whole Foods Expansion Building is a great example of a really nice design being beset by poor or sub-optimal craftsmanship. The uneven black flashing on top of the silver tiles and uneven bottom to some of the curves of the silver tiles take an otherwise excellent design and make it feel a little cheap. Otherwise, that's a great building. Will try to check it out in person when I'm in Austin this weekend for the first time in over 6 years.
|
I agree the Whole Foods expansion looks great and nice use of materials!

It's crazy to think Austin could have a supertall, two 800'ers, five 700'ers, two 600'ers, and several more over 400' tall - all under construction at the same time.

To me, Austin already has the most beautiful skyline in the state, and possibly west of the Mississippi. And with all the new talls under construction and planned, it will be spectacular.
|
Totally agree!

Anyone else notice the new Kay Jeweler's commercial was filed in Austin? The first scene was from the summit of Mount Bonnell.

Wow! That's interesting.

A Developer’s Opulent Plans Along Lake Austin Include Luxe Condos, a Park, and a Funicular
A sign of the times on a showstopping Hill Country peak https://www.texasmonthly.com/style/d...ark-funicular/ The 145-acre Camelback property on Lake Austin, just west of the iconic Pennybacker Bridge, rises straight up a series of limestone cliffs to a densely forested ridge 380 feet above the water. It’s as close to a proper mountain as you can find in Central Texas. And what a mountain. From the top, you can see the sweeping semicircular curve of the Colorado River below, and off to the east, a gap in the hills frames the Oz-like cluster of high-rises in downtown Austin, ten or so miles away. It’s here that property owner Jonathan Coon has built a four-story metal-frame viewing platform that rises above the treetops and affords lucky visitors one of the most commanding views in the state. The platform won’t be here for long, though: It exists only so that Coon can sell people on his new plan, announced Tuesday, to turn the Camelback into the site of an ultra-luxury condo community with 179 cliffside homes, a private marina, a sprawling athletic center with outdoor and indoor tennis courts—and an air-conditioned, glass-box funicular that will whisk residents from hilltop to lakeside in two minutes flat. Four Seasons, the luxury resort company famous for such properties as the Grand-Hôtel du Cap-Ferrat on the French Riviera as well as high-end hotels and residences in Austin, Houston, and Dallas, will manage the property, to be known as the Four Seasons Private Residences Lake Austin. |
