Dallas is also growing and still building towers, so unless something unexpected happens I would lean towards a flat out no. :)

But not superTALLS. Austin is definitely competition for Dallas & Houston
as technology continues to explode even more of a threat. Old oil is dead.

I think Kevin can pull the actual numbers up...But, Austin has far more 400'+ towers proposed, approved or U/C than does Dallas. The gap IS closing - fast. And, I don't believe it's too big of a gap right now.

drummer Jan 28, 2021 2:22 PM

Let's not turn this into a city vs city thread, y'all.

Dallas/Fort Worth is booming at ridiculous amounts across the whole metroplex.

Austin is booming at ridiculous amounts as well.

Houston is also, I believe.

San Antonio, too.

Yay, Texas! Let's leave it there. :)

The Best Forumer Jan 28, 2021 8:41 PM

It almost seems like Houston is slowing down a little... but then again I've not been out in a while...

However, all of these new towers are good for Austin. Keep up the good work!

Dale Jan 28, 2021 9:06 PM

Seems like the whole world is moving to Texas (and Florida). That can hardly be a bad thing for skyscrapers!

An affiliate of Stonelake Capital Partners (“Stonelake”) announced that it has acquired the 0.5-acre site located at the southeast corner of W. 5th Street and Colorado Street in Downtown, where it plans to develop a 50-story tower totaling approximately 465,000 rentable square feet of residences and Class-AA office space. The working name for the development is “5th & Colorado” with full branding and identity to be announced at a later date. The purchase of the land closed in September 2020 for an undisclosed price.

Initial plans for 5th & Colorado call for 318 residences above 100,000-sf of office space. Typical residential floor plans will average 1,150-sf and office floor plates will total 20,000-sf around a central core. 5th & Colorado will feature four (4) residential and office amenity levels including two (2) sky lounges on levels 49 and 50. Separate ground floor lobby entrances and elevator banks will provide distinction for each the office and residences while activating both sides of 5th Street and Colorado with a lively streetscape.

Stonelake has engaged Ziegler Cooper Architects to design 5th & Colorado and Harvey Builders as general contractor. Garza EMC is handling civil engineering. Stonelake will own 100% of 5th & Colorado without an outside equity or development par partner. Construction commencement is tentatively set for Q1 2022 with completion expected early 2025.

I updated the list of Austin's tallest projects:

https://skyscraperpage.com/forum/sho...05&postcount=6

The list has 80 projects over 150'. It doesn't include some projects where we are waiting for height or floor counts. 307 E. 2nd is an example of a big project that we are awaiting height info.

Here are the first 25 on the list. The green highlight means they are U/C.

Please read the story...

This is a new proposal for The Travis-Tower II site. It's now known (at least temporarily) as 80 Red River. There is an entire thread regarding this tower and Travis-Tower I.

And, no...it will be the second tallest in town (as the clowns at the Statesman proclaim). If built (and completed as designed), 98 Red River, 6XGuad and 4th & Brazos will be taller.

Does anyone have a guess of the tower crane activity downtown?

KevinFromTexas Jan 30, 2021 3:22 AM

I counted 35 last week, but that was inside and outside of downtown. I was up on the UT garage on MLK and could see cranes at the Domain and way into East Austin, and South Austin. Yesterday, I noticed another one, so 36 is my count, but there were at least 10 or more that I couldn't see at the Tesla site in East Austin. My guess is there's probably about 70 or so cranes in Austin.

IluvATX Jan 30, 2021 3:26 AM

That’s crazy, considering the high rise apartments here

Questions: with lots of downtowns still boarded up shells, what’s it like on the ground in Austin.

clubtokyo Jan 30, 2021 5:28 PM

I was downtown yesterday and it was pretty lively, lots of people out and about.

The only area that I have seen downtown with a decent amount of boarded-up first levels are several bars along Dirty Sixth Street.

As previously mentioned, the rest of downtown is quite normal - albeit with less vehicular traffic. However, that is starting to come back.

I will note that I-35 and MoPac (through downtown) are both approaching pre-COVID traffic levels during rush hour.

Thanks guys!

Hit several parks downtown yesterday. People everywhere. Really crowded. Not surprising given the weather.

Yeah, I did, too. I went up to Saint Ed's first for that view, then rode the boardwalk over to the Longhorn Dam. The boardwalk and trail were packed with people riding bikes, jogging with the kids and dogs. I put my mask on for the ride because there were so many. And up and down South Congress there were people all over the place. They had those venders set up, too, and the restaurants were buzzing. It was a beautiful day yesterday. It almost felt normal.

I didn’t realize I was part of a skirmish, high school-level or other wise. I simply found the “Austin deserves...” comment to be odd.

I just meant because Austin has gone from sleepy college town to potentially having the tallest in Texas is a huge move forward. Maybe deserve wasn’t the right word, but it certainly has the potential to compete with larger cities with larger skylines. Also didn’t realize it was a “skirmish”.

back on track? At least this thread is getting some attention now. It has been dead for weeks.

bilbao58 Mar 5, 2021 10:54 PM

I guess I should make it clear that my original post about not letting Austin have the tallest building was somewhat facetious. But not totally facetious. In all honestly, I’d prefer to see Houston defend its title. At the same time, I lived in Austin for a short time in the late seventies and it’s fascinating to see the changes. As long as it doesn’t get too uppity. ;)

clubtokyo Mar 5, 2021 11:11 PM

ILUVSAT Mar 6, 2021 6:41 PM

No worries. My apologies. There is a lot of city-v-city malcontent going on and I misunderstood your intent having only typed words to go by. I now see that it was benign.

Again, my apologies.

With regard to Wells Fargo Tower - if said project were to ever get off the ground, don't you think it may be difficult to find windows to match the current curtain wall of the tower?

I'm thinking something other than windows, like a metal mesh, would be better. Something that wouldn't shatter in a hurricane. As for matching the existing windows, they haven't had any issues that I know of replacing windows in the past.

Block 71, 542ft. You were saying Austin has no “commerce” towers and that we only have residential and mixed use. Yeah the new tallest will not be all office, but we for sure have plenty of new office towers and we are a tiny little brother to Houston. Austin is doing great for its size. So what exactly are we trying to compare here??

Not to mention that when Houston’s tallest “commerce towers” were built was nearly 40 years ago. Before mixed use was even a thing.

Pointing out that Houston's tallest buildings were built before mixed use was a thing actually just reinforces my point that Austin can't fill a supertall with offices only, by the way.

You guys need to chill out. Austin's growth and changes are phenomenal. I hated the place back in 70s. I think it's very impressive now.

Houston has a very impressive skyline. I just don’t see why being all commercial is an issue at all.
